The new Baleno was launched only a few weeks ago in SA and Leadfoot attended the launch for MotorMatters. Having missed out, I was very happy to receive a test car so soon after the launch event.
The new version has been sharpened in looks, especially at the front with redesigned grille and lights making it look more modern and aggressive in my opinion then the previous version.
The real changes are under the bonnet and on the interior of the car. Starting with the engine, it increases from 1.4 to 1.5l of naturally aspirated power. An increase from 68 to 77kW (almost 15%) with torque increasing to 138Nm from the previous 130.
These increases may seem small but they make a significant difference on the road to the overall drivability both around town and on the freeway. The car just feels far more relaxed overall than before.
As always, fuel economy is typical of Suzuki and even Leadfoot couldn't affect the figure of 5.8l/100km that the car showed at the end of the test. The best part is that most owners will be able to achieve similar figures with very little effort. This is a major factor to buyers in this category with current, ever increasing fuel prices.
The Baleno is an interesting model, larger than most competitors in this price segment and the new version continues with this tradition. There are 2 spec levels available being GL as tested and GLX. The spec levels have been improved from the old version and the new model offers even better value for money.
From my perspective, the price difference between GL and GLX puts the 2 versions into completely different categories, so it's difficult to compare which I would actually choose between them.
The new GL offers a touchscreen with reverse camera and Android Auto/ Apple Carplay. Auto air-conditioning replaces the previous manual system and has LED headlights. The current price is R225 000.
This makes the GL an absolute bargain, almost putting the car into the budget category yet providing far more space, spec and power than many other contenders at this price point.
Adding R50 000 to reach a price of R275 000, the GLX adds 4 extra airbags for a total of 6, heads-up display, keyless entry and push-button start and 16" alloy wheels to the package. I repeat that this is an unfair comparison and the GLX should be evaluated completely separately.
A 4 year/ 60 000km service plan and 5 year/ 200 000km warranty complete the package.

True you hardly get this from other brands eg VW
True... But honestly I don't think there is a rear camera on the base model or the GLX. The one in this video is probably after market.

I'm buying this car. Worth it.
Just got the GLX version, I did about 531 kilometers from Joburg and used about 30 liters,with old Ciaz I would use like 35/36 litters, this car is better than my old Ciaz, surprisingly stable on cross winds areas than Ciaz and easy to live with. The LEDs on GLX perfect for night drive.My only issues is lake of auto locking, just make sure you lock if you have valuables in the boot and another issue is some developing rattles from inside the front doors, hope the dealer sort this out, small sun visors. But otherwise a very good car at the price.

I have no clue why they don't have an auto locking feature when pulling off. My 2015 Nissan micra has this feature so I wonder what Suzuki's excuse is. Otherwise its a solid car for the price.

Your petrol tank volume criticism is petty. The larger the tank, the more you spend at the pumps. No thanks. The 685+ range it achieves is exceptional. Perhaps crack a smile sometime, and say hello at the beginning of your reviews. My two observations.

Never seen a Baleno on TH-cam or car reviews or comments achieving 685km range.
If so, that is 5,2L/100km fuel consumption, probably traveling 100km/h for the entire trip. Correct me if I'm wrong....

This is a good car, but the worry is the 2 Airbags vs the 6. Mine will be used for a school run...2 Airbags is a concern

Gl is 40 000 less than glx. Use that money and pay the vechicle off.
Will not even consider the GL, only 2 airbags, rather pay extra for GLS and 6 airbags

I enjoyed the review of my car and it reiterated that I made a good decision. All the other stuff you can live without granted the airbags would have been nice to have and whats up with not having a boot light
Good choice!
Boot light, light on the storage compartment, airbags and auto locking system are the only cons so far. Otherwise, GL is good value for money over GLX

This review was flat and not up to you usually good standards. Why the comparison? Review it on it's outstanding merits and be done with it. This model is the best value for money hatchback currently available in SA. Simple.

This is the second base model of baleno has cruise control, armrest with rear AC vents and 1.5 litre engine but in india it comes with 1.2 litre engine, no armrest with AC vents, no cruise controls but still I'm so happy with the car, i owned it in the month of March first base model nice review to watch but from which country you reviewed this, thanks

No1 has stock of the GL. I asked 3 dealerships and they said Sept. I am worried prices will go up by then
Also I drove the GLX uphill, the engine was loud, it put me off a bit but haven't identified an alternative car yet
