Luminosity used to be the only range blending method (there's the other one that I still have no idea how it works or how it can be useful) but now there are more methods available. Also live mask can be dragged around which isn't something the old blending range can do I think.
With range blending you can choose if it has to use the selected layer or the layers below. With live luminosity masks you can also draw on the mask to disable it on unwanted parts. It's also more obvious that is active as you can actually see the mask in the layers panel.. Luminosity masks feel like blend ranges on steroids...
