- "Wenshan Dai" is a documentary film of the Dai ethnic group in Wenshan Prefecture of Yunnan Province, China. I suppose this group of Dai people to be of Central Tai group instead of the Southwestern Tai group, to which all other Dai groups in Yunnan Province belong. The evidence can be summarized from their language, culture, clothing, customs, and religious belief presented in the video. This group of Dai people may be identical with a specific western branch of the Tay people in Northern Vietnam, since both of them share similar ethnic features aforementioned. Moreover, they are both adjacently distributed crossing the Sino-Vietnamese border. I would like to carry a fieldwork research on this language in the future to test my hypothesis.
我剛看了由中國雲南文山壯族苗族自治州官方錄製的《文山傣族》的紀錄片，發現從語言、文化、服飾、習慣和宗教信仰等看，這一支傣族其實與越南的Tay（漢譯“岱族”）人的西部支系應為同一人群，語言上應該屬於台語支中部組，而不像其他傣族支系一樣屬於台語支西南組。我很有興趣未來實地調查文山傣族的語言，看看我這個初步印象是否可以得到證實。

D YNG In general, I don’t think that the mainstream of Thai race is closely related with the Dong. Linguistically, Thais, Lao, Dai, Shan, and also Zhuang share the same vocabulary and structure of sentences. Culturally, they share many life aspects. Biologically, they are closely related by DNA and intermarriage.
@Kush Kunte Both Siamese and Khmers adopted Angkorian culture. ‘Adopt’ doesn’t mean ‘steal’. Thais are not pure Tai. Genetically, Siamese and Isan Thais have Mon-Khmer bloods. Southern Thais also has Malay and Dravidian bloods. Northern Thais are closer to Tai in China.
Khmers are originated in the Mekong lowland while Siam had been dominated by Dvaravati Mons since prehistory. So Mons are true ancestors of central Thai people mixed with Angkorians and Tai-Lao from the north. Stop claiming that all culture belong to Khmers. Your original culture is similar to Northern Khmer in Isan (Khmer Surin). Indians don’t claim that Khmers stole their culture.
Khmers invaded Mon territories of Dvaravati in Chao Phraya valley much later and spred Khmer culture to Siamese. Many Khmer arts like dances, music, costumes and architecture were destroyed by Khmer Rouge. Cambodian royal family invited many Siamese artists to help revive their culture thereafter because we share the same culture. You can research the evidences in your country.
Mons are not Khmers! They are different race who speak Mon-Khmer language just like Vietnamese. Mons did not just disappear or migrated to Burma. They had been assimilated with Tai. You can prove from the genetic evidences.
Thai language has multiple layers of different roots: Native Tai, Old-Middle Chinese, Old Mon, Old Khmer, Old Malay, Pali-Sanskrit, Persian, etc. Old Mon words in Thai language are much older than Khmer so that Thais don’t realize those are Old Mon words because it’s monosyllabic and tonal unlike Old Khmer words which are unique and remarkable.
Past is past. We should support together to improve our well-being rather than blaim each other due to nationalism. I know both Thai and Khmer netizens always love to argue about this topic but they’d better stop this. We are brothers!

Very interesting. The whole culture- language, singing, clothes and food looks similar to my family's. According to my dna test, I'm 12% Chinese Dai... with the help of 23andme DNA test, I found out that I am about 4% Chinese Dai. I am 91% Vietnamese. I would like to travel and learn about Dai people in Yunnan. Should I learn Tai or Cantonese or Mandarin to communicate with them?
Possibly Southern Zhuang (or Tay-Nung).
What do you think? The common language in China is mandarin why would you learn Cantonese? It isn’t even spoken in yunnan
