Arthur Smith is the original "Guitar Boogie" man! After seeing all the guys attempting this song on TH-cam it's great to see the master himself. His record put the guitar on the map as a lead instrument in 1945 and his playing influenced everybody from Carl Perkins to BB King to Doc Watson to Jimi Hendrix.
With all of us on TH-cam trying our hand at this classic, FINALLY we get to see the master himself. I grew up in Winston-Salem watching the Arthur Smith Show Thurs nights before Lost in Space back in the 60's. It was until decades later that I heard Guitar Boogie and learned what an impact it had on music world wide. Everyone from BB King to Carl Perkins to Chuck Berry to Jimi Hendrix were influenced by this man's playing.
This is basically a tune that every guitar player must be able to play. Pure and simple playing at its best. Good to hear a tune w/o all the electronics as normally is the case these days
Tommy's version is NOT better just different. Arthur was the first To record a guitar version of the boogie. It sold millions. And on a D-28 too and not on electric. Thumbs up all the way. Ken, Toronto
Arthur Smith's "Guitar Boogie" actually broke onto Billboard's country charts Christmas week in 1948 on the MGM label and climbed to #8 in 1949 over a seven-week run. The flip side, "Boomerang,:" also reached #8 but faded after four weeks. Smith, born in 1921, ran a recording studio in Charlotte, South Carolina.
@tommydapie123 FYI- The dude is Arthur's son Clay. Clay isn't as good as his Dad nor did he ever claim to be. He played with his dad for years and does a considerable amount for recording, producing and editing in Charlotte. The Smiths were members of Providence Baptist Church and entertained at church functions as did George Hamilton IV. Tommy Emmanuel played in Charlotte in July and although Arthur was unable to attend, Tommy acknowledged him before playing GB.
merci cher Arthur pour ce mythe musical et immortel "Guitar Boogie" qui m'a donné envie de faire de la Guitare très tôt et qui est devenu mon métier ....
Oh yeah Arthur was good on the guitar, not a Chet Atkins but he wasn't bad ! I watched his show a lot when I was growinig up in eastern NC ...Never cared much for his brother Ralph though. Thanks for posting this !
Mr, Smith I have been a very big fan of your from way back when you had yours how .I still have some of your LP"s Of you and Tommy you to made a good pair. I love to play your music on my guitar. It brings me way back. My Mother has payed with you and Tommy at a Realstate way back in the day . I loved you then, I and I still am playing your music. Mother was Myrtle Schrimpsher she played a old Kent 12, string.Yoou may not remember it but as a boy I still do! A very big fan Mike Schrimpsher
Arthur Smith was the original writer of Duelin' Banjos, which he recorded with Don Reno and called it Feudin' Banjos. Arthur on tenor banjo and Don of five string. He waited until the Deliverance movie came out and then sued because they thought the song was PD. He got a very handsome settlement I understand. Little man 1, Big movie moguls 0. Atta boy Arthur.
@Rob919Gore Really? I grew up watching his show every morning...so where are all the old tapes? Didn't they produce it in Charlotte? That show needs to be out on DVD or at least TH-cam!!! I suppose Brother Ralph and the rest of the crew are long dead, huh? I tried sending a letter to Arthur but never got a response.
Tommy's version is not better, just different. This is sweet after all these years I get to see Arthur Smith play the Guitar Boogie. Originally recorded with a D-28 so I've read. Ken, Toronto
You guys make contradictions from nothing!! Tommy even said that it's Arthur's, but he plays it in a more tasty way blues, bluegrass, country, faster, perfect!!

@BoCorky Thanks for posting that. Makes me adore Tommy that much more. Gotta respect where it came from, you know.
Awesome...! Mr. Guitar Boogie himself...!
@thijsderoo, does it matter to you that Smith wrote the song and originated the riffs and melodies? Being first does matter, doesn't it?
Happy birthday, Arthur!
Hmmm - sounds like Rock N Roll to me and in 1945 no less.
Maybe he started it all huh!
ça envoie du lourd ! de la muisque, de la vrai
I like Tommy's version od Guitar Boogie on his newest "Little by Little" album. Tommy used his Wayne Henderson guitar on the recording.
Very nice ...
Quagmire at 0:35!

Tommy may play it faster & improvised it alot. But even he'll tell ya arthur wrote the song.
