For anyone interested in how the 3D printed impeller holds up, this is my wear study after nearly a year of daily use in my BCG800XL: imgur.com/a/cVgST
In 14 years of using TH-cam I've never made a comment, but your tutorial definitely deserves one. You should get the nobel price for DIY! Thank you so much for putting so much time into this and helping many others, including me. Btw, it also worked on the European model, known as Solis Caffissima 168 and possibly also on the recent model / brand Sage Smart Grinder Pro.
we're in 2020, and I have the same problem. I went ahead and ordered the part then followed your amazing instructions and fixed my grinder. Thank you very much for taking the time and making this video and designing the impeller. you have saved me more than $200.
I had a good tip from the Breville people when I called today: they told me to clean the machine thoroughly (take off the hopper and remove the first burr and clean as much as possible - I use a pointed, curved dental cleaning tool to do this) and then reassemble it and grind a 1/4 cup of dry, unseasoned, white rice through the grinder at maximal (large) grain size and this would absorb the oils that have been clogging my machine. It seems to have worked so far. I ran two batches of rice through it (one on coarse- and one on fine- grind) and it ground the rice very well. Later, I tried with coffee and it seems to be working normally again. I think I’ll do this every month to keep it as clean as possible.
gottebp, THANKS !! I purchased your impeller on Shapeways and a 8 inches screwdriver ;-) So for few bucks I had the satisfaction of fixing my grinder on my own !! Keep going, what your doing is simple, clear and very usefull !!
Hello, it's been a few years since you posted this but I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make these videos/instructions. Most of all, thanks for taking the time to design the part to perfection for sale! Got the BCG400, new 3d printed part in hand, time to fix this thing.
THIS IS AWESOME!!! Just got the 3d printed impeller part from shapeways!!!! I used it for my older grinder/espresso machine combo Barista Express BES860XL. With a minor modification, it worked like a charm. Modifications were: 1) make the center hole circular with an exacto knife, 2) sand a tiny bit the impeller sides so it doesn't touch the walls, 3) remove the old insulation that was fitted between the impeller and the base. I CAN GRIND FINE COFFEE AGAIN for $20 vs Breville's stupid policy for $200 repair service instead of sending parts !!!! Let's hope it will last some time :-) Thanks for creating this 3D printed part.
Quick comment to others. My BCG800 grinder I bought in 2011 was making the dreaded click click click noises too lately. I'm a 2 coffee a day house, so my machine doesn't get much work. Sometimes they just need a good clean. I took mine out the garage and blasted the impeller area with some compressed air to clean it up. My impeller blades where not as worn down as this video shows. Noises went away. It is still great that this part is available, as I'm sure mine will need one of these replacements in the next 5 years. Great video!
I am so glad I found this video! What a service you have provided - first with this excellent video explaining step by step how to take apart and fix this problem and also giving us the info to get the 3-D printed part. Genius! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for making this video. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. My Breville is 7 years old, and I didn’t have to send it to the landfill. I had my fingers crossed after reassembly.... so happy when this worked:)
Brilliant! This video is very specific about what needs to be done, but very easy to understand and follow along. You should make Do It Yourself videos for a living. Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for taking the time to patiently and thoroughly describe the entire process. My grinder works again, because of the great job you did with this video.
You sir, are amazing. My grinder has been plugging every couple of weeks and the impeller is so worn, I can remove it without the full disassembly. I've ordered your part and look forward to doing the full repair. It's great to find someone who, in this age of disposable consumer products not only figured out a repair, but took the time to engineer a replacement and make it available for the rest of us at a reasonable cost. Thank you! And to Breville, I mean, really? Shame on them. A design that wears out and no replacement parts? In a different, earlier time, this product would have had a metal impeller and cylinder, and lasted a lifetime.
Did the impeller replacement, but two weeks later I still have a lot of static and a coffee ground mess on the counter everytime I run the machine. Any thoughts or solutions? I have tried the wet spoon trick. I also had to introduce a washer shim under the lower burr as I was now at the finest grind setting with the new impeller. The new impeller must have been slightly thinner than the original.
Two things I recommend to try at this point: 1) A lighter roast temporarily (less oily is best here). 2) This oil trick: www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800XL+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/62905#s134179
Your part worked out great! I found that the tolerances used in printing made the part slightly oversized, just like your page indicates. It fit the bore perfectly, but it was a little tall, so despite the match marks it wound up pushing the lower register of the stationary burr into the impeller. Rather than sand down the impeller I opted to index the adjuster ring gear back about 10 teeth from the original setting. I drilled new holes for the stop screws and moved them. Yes, I did sacrifice the very finest of grind, but I never operated in that space anyway (I'm not a lover of turkish coffees). Again, nicely done!
Update: Ultimately, I find that this part is not printed from the correct material to properly do the job. Static electricity is a big issue. The fit is fantastic, but the function leaves a lot to be desired. After several weeks of daily use I got tired of coffee grounds shooting out all over the machine and my counter. I wound up replacing the machine with a Rancillio. I wonder if a urethane or stainless part would work better?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talents with us. I bought the 3d-printed part and installed using your wonderful video. I appreciate you helping save me money while encouraging me to do something I ordinarily wouldn't even think of trying.
Well done. Nice clear instructions with important tips along the way. I had no problems following them and now the 3D printed part is installed and all is good again. The motor does not sound like it is labouring anymore and the grinds are ejected instead of jamming around the side of the impeller. Thanks. I only wish I could have 3D printed the new impeller and this would have been a 100% DIY job.
Great video. My output chute and impeller were totally gummed up and I used this guide to disassemble and fix it. Thanks very much. The one part that was challenging was going to Harbor Freight to get thinner screwdrivers.
Hi - thanks for providing this video and the option to purchase the replacement grinder blade via Shapeways. I purchased the replacement part, followed your guidance, put everything back together, and the coffee ground perfectly. But...only once. Then it makes a screeching sound. I can fix it by unplugging the machine, removing the bean hopper, upper burr, remove beans and spin the burr using the override button. Everything works again. Then I can grind about 4 cups of coffee beans before the screeching begins again. I am hoping you can give me a few trouble shooting tips to try. I am so excited about being able to fix this machine and it seem like this has to be something simple that either I am not doing or can adjust. I can send a short video clip to you of the sound that it is making. It is not the ratcheting sound, just the screeching. Thanks, Marialane
Hi Marialane, Oh no, is the screeching similar to this video?: th-cam.com/video/PcQcbHIPqx8/w-d-xo.htmlm12s If so, it is likely that the main drive gear is stripped. More on this here: www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800XL+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/62905#s134181 Try using the ratchet w/10mm socket and making the the lower burr mechanism rotate several revolutions (unplugged of course). You may be able to feel a difference if you rotate into an area of stripped gear teeth. If you do verify teeth damage, there is a seller for that gear on ebay if you search "Breville Smart Grinder Main Gear". Unfortunately it is quite steeply priced in my opinion. I wish I had better news.
Brilliant work! I have a BES860XL. It is made so you cannot remove the bottom burr; it is fixed to the shaft. So I had to take the whole machine apart and remove the grinding assembly from the motor, and then disassemble the grinder. But I found the impeller. And after 6 years of two cups a day, it is well worn. I will order one of these. I hope it fits! And more, what I hope is that I can remember how to pull all of this stuff back together when it arrives. Many thanks!
Did the impeller fix work on the BES860XL? My built in grinder is making the same noise. I don't want to order the part and disassemble and find that it doesn't fit or fix the problem. Thank you.
I couldn't get the big plastic gear off that you remove at 10:10 in the video. If anyone has tips/tricks on how to remove it, please let me know. Thanks!
I have the older model Breville and I grind enough coffee for about a 8 cup a day habit , its 4 years old and now I know why I have gone from Fine to past Medium and I have to push the beans through with my fingers lol ,, Thanks for the Video ,, I will now upgrade to the Smart Pro ,, 4 years was pretty good though lol
gottebp, thanks for the instructional video. I ordered a new impeller. I took the machine apart and it didn't seem there was a difference with the impeller; however, after it was back together the same sound occurred. I figure I'll order this impeller and see if there will be a difference. Also, I was putting the large cog wheel back in and at first it wouldn't sit solid on it's place. After a few attempts I realized the inside metal piece spins and gives ample space for the cog to clamp in and set down flush. I don't remember this on your video. Just a small extra item I ran into. Thanks again for the tip trick and 3D impeller. JS Gainesville, FL
just replaced mine about a week ago as well and I cant seem to eliminate the terrible new static problem which is sending grinds everywhere. its a huge mess. are you having this issue?
Thank you much, I bought the breville 900 espresso machine and 800xl grinder new about 6 or 7 years ago. I started having problems with the espresso machine a couple weeks ago and talked with breville about getting parts to fix, they were not interested in helping me, all they wanted me to do was to send it back and they would fix it for 400 bucks plus shipping, almost half what I paid for it, NO WAY. Earlier this week the grinder stopped grinding. I found your video and after looking below the burr I could see all the teeth. I just ordered a new 3d impeller and know I can make it work like new again. Why can't we just go to the breville website and get a replacement for 10 to 20 dollars? Some of us are not stupid and can do our own repairs with a little help from people like you. I will NEVER buy another breville product, it is my opinion, a POOR BUSINESS plan, selling you the machine and not supporting the machine with easily available PARTS.
I have a BCG600 and started having problems after about 6-7 months. I noticed that coffee grind becomes compacted on top of the impeller. Compounded by the fact that coffee was also packed in between the blades of the impeller. There is a space between the bottom of the lower burr and the top of the impeller. This space changes depending on your adjustment of your grind. I noticed that when my grinder was having trouble and I increased the grind size it would work for a few more times. I kept having to increase the grind size. I also noticed I couldn't bring the grind size down to the zero setting. I removed only the upper burr (you may need to be patient-mine was very stuck). Made sure the grind setting was on max (large grind 40) to open the gap. Stuck a plastic straw(and bamboo skewer) in to break up the caked coffee grind. And used a vacuum to pull it all out. Runs like new. The only mod I would make to your impeller would be to add some type of spiral looking channels to the top of the impeller. That might prevent coffee from packing of top of it. But I also have no idea if the 800 impeller moves up and down like the 600 model. Thanks for your direction. I may need your impeller further down the road.
Glad you got your BCG600 fixed up Hugh! BTW, if you ever decide on replacing the impeller, the steps are different enough from the BCG800 that I put together a separate guide here: www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG600SIL+Coffee+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/96493 Cheers!
Just want to mention that I truly enjoyed watching your video.. is very well explained and gave me the confidence to go ahead and repair my coffee grinder…. One question: where is the cheapest place I can buy an impeller ? Thank you
@gottebp I bought a BCG820BSSXL about 18 Months ago which has a metal clad plastic impeller. TLDR: I want to know if the part on Shapeways is compatible. A number of Months back I heard a crack sound come from the grinder when grinding. Ever since it has been producing grounds at about half the speed. The motor sounds normal so I don't think it's the problem. I'm intending to inspect the impeller more closely at my next cleaning. I will use your disassembly instructions so thank you for that. It's my assumption that the metal should not wear very quickly and it would be strange for a sudden shift in grind speed. I have thoroughly removed all grounds and dust with an air duster a couple of times but the grind speed is still off. If you took the time to read all of this (again, thank you) are there other trouble spots that can cause a sudden reduction in moving the grounds out the chute? Thank you!
The repair worked great, and thank you for the video and part design. One caveat; A static charge scatters some of the grounds now. Makes quite the mess around the outlet. Any advice?
Hi Ben. I followed this video a few years ago to fix my grinder, ordering the shapeways impeller, and it creates a lot of static...still to this day! I had assume after a lot of use the problem would dissipate as the impeller wore down a bit. I use a grounding cable (from an Earthing grounding kit I used to use) to fix the problem. But I'm sure I remember seeing an extra 1-2 minute video from you that gave advice on how to adjust the impeller to reduce static. I cannot find that, and nothing else I can find on TH-cam touches on what (I'm sure I recall) you advising. Can you help me?
Hello, your video is extremely helpful but sadly I own a BCG820XL, and the shapeways description said the replacement will not fit my grinder. Do you happen to know to what extent it doesn't fit, so I could maybe alter it and make it work, or would I need to find a different replacement? Thank you!
Great how too video. Part came in a little over a week and was an easy replacement. Original part was worn down like in the video. Only problem is I'm still not getting a much coffee ground as I should. I'll set it for 9 cups and I'm lucky if I get four out. Same problem as before. Any ideas?
Hi there, I've done the repair, the part fit nicely but I am experiencing a lot of coffee ground spray due to static with this new impeller. I see a previous poster noted the same and asked if there is anything that can be done? I've tried a bit of water in the beans to no avail. Any other ideas?
Thanks for the great video...love the details and you are clear with the steps. Even my husband could not get that white sprocket wheel so I finally used a screwdriver to pry it out. I am hoping the impeller (mine does not look super worn) is the problem so will order one, but is there a way to tell if it is the motor? When cleaning out all the caked in coffee, I damaged the felt washer. Do you know where I can find that? Very frustrating that Breville has discontinued the parts for this grinder as it's not that old. They obviously do not want people fixing these themselves. Thanks again!
I have the newer model, the BCG820BSS. A month or so back it was grinding away as per normal, the sound was consistent and the motor RPM staying more or less constant. It then made a few crunch sounds and I thought it might have copped a little pebble or something. It didn't stall and just kept on going and completed my 12 second setting. Since then, it has been acting up. The RPM often blazes up high like it isn't grinding anything at all, and I have had to increase the time to 20 seconds just to get enough grounds. I have taken the burr and basket out completely, twice, and cleaned out every last trace of grounds but the problem persists. I have tried 3 different batches of beans, same same. I noticed that there is a nasty 'electrical' smell coming out of the rear vent. It doesn't smell happy. Of note, the impeller is metal, yet strangely, doesn't sweep to the outer perimeter like your replacement impeller in this video. It also seems to leave a good 5mm of space UNDER the impeller where grounds will just sit without being ejected. What the heck? A place to trap old grounds? Not the best idea, I'm sure. Anyone seen this issue?
Pete D that unfortunately sounds like a stripped gear in the gear box. You can confirm by unplugging the machine and putting a ratchet on the lower burr’s acorn nut. slowly force it to rotate counterclockwise through ~10 rotations and see if it feels smooth throughout. If a few gear teeth are stripped it should be felt. If your bcg820 is under warranty I would contact Breville.
@@gottebp Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's still under warranty. We are under no obligation to deal with Breville in Australia due to the consumer protection laws. The problem and the warranty are for the retailer to sort out. My contract is with the retailer.
I’m amazed of how people start repairing there tools. It was obvious from the start that if you have opened the round nut on top of the conical burr you would have access to the blade under the conical burrs and not possibly miss up the initial calibration from the factory. Something that you want to consider before changing the 3D printed slider next time.
Great video, thank you for making it - and especially for designing a replacement impeller. Mine arrived today and has been installed and the grinder is back in business. I dug 2 tbsp of compacted ground coffee out of the impeller chamber and a large chunk of coffee out of the chute entrance. What a difference. I have one question - that 1/2 mm clearance you mentioned where the top of the grinder burr meets the shaft - I'd say my clearance is more like 1 mm and the coffee comes gushing out of the machine even at the finest setting. The washer at the base of the shaft is installed and I replaced the piece of felt too. I'm pretty sure I didn't misalign the cogs too. I was wondering (hoping) you might have a suggestion. Anyhow, thanks again for a very clearly explained and well shot video!
It's been a long time since i wrote the original message - I should have amended it with the following caveat. The 3D-printed impeller that I got was 20 thousandths of an inch shorter than the original. I'm referring to the height of the impeller when it's sitting flat like a pancake. With that part installed, at the finest grind setting on my Breville, the coffee came gushing out of the espresso machine. I was able to modify my grinder slightly to compensate for the thinner impeller and the grind is fine enough once again that I can get coffee dripping out ultra slowly at the finest grind setting. It can now easily be adjusted to flow out of the coffee machine at any reasonable setting I want now. Your mileage may vary.
@@etorrez95 Hey Enrique, I played with the large plastic cog inside the grinder. I assume you know what I'm referring to if you've watched this video and ordered the 3d-printed Impeller. If imagine that the screws aren't there (mine came from the factory with 2 screws), then when you keep turning the grind setting to the finest setting, the screws aren't there to stop the turn. I experimented with removing the screws and _carefully_ turning the fineness setting to finer maybe 1/8 of a turn of the knob at a time. That worked, but it took a while. NOTE: If you go too far, then the burrs of the conical part at the bottom and the hollow part at the top will touch during the grinding and that would be very bad. So you need to make sure you find the right amount of extra fineness to make a decent coffee but before the burrs are touching.
Thanks so much for this video! It is really clear and easy to follow and I've already bought your expeller. Now I've opened the unit up and the black rubber gasket that goes in between the big white gear and the inner circle. any idea where I can find a new one of these? Breville is no hepl obvs. Thanks much!
Last question... If I know someone who has a BCG600 which is having Sam earth issue, is part same specs? I see there are replacement instructions for this model as well.
@gottebp I noticed that you did not replace the "cottony" cover that surrounded the shaft where the washer goes. Is that not necessary? I've taken the machine apart and now I'm waiting for the impeller to arrive. I cleaned that "cottony" thingy but if it's not necessary I'll just throw it away. Please advise.
I'm needing help in replacing the last large gear...it doesn't seem to want to snap in place to engage gear controlled by knob on outside. Everything lines up...am I not pushing down hard enough?
I've just bought one of these in the sale.. it's reassuring to know that when the impeller wears down there's a fix. What's a little worrying is that over a few years how much plastic we're consuming in our coffee.
At least the solids (if any), goes down the food disposal with the grounds...or wherever you throw your grounds. True? You've got to admit we've ingested worse things in our bodies that we weren't aware of before we purchased.
Any help appreciated. Bought my machine used. Only used 1x. Now ratcheting. Mine is the 820BSSXL model your site cant make the impeller. Any where to get the impeller?
I promised myself to leave a comment here, hopefully preventing one of you from the pain and hassle I went through. Although I appreciate the detailed instructions here, after ordering the parts online and even trying to fix my machine unsuccessfully, I simply send a message to Breville customer service. They asked for the make and model, I recieved a shipping box and label in 48 hours and then a week later I had my machine at my doorstep fixed! My espresso machine was not in warranty as I had been using it for over two years and I have even opened the internals of trying to follow the instructions here to fix the grinder. Breville has an amazing customer service and they back their product. No reason to go through so much hassle. Hope this helps!
Hello. Thank you for your informational tutorials. However, in the disassembly, we’ve come to the conclusion that we think it’s a stripped drive gear. I couldn’t find the solution on your website. Any tips?
Very good video, thanks a lot, but I am stuck with my clogged smart grinder 820, as I removed the hopper but I can't remove the basket (upper burr). It is stuck. The flimsy handle doesn't provide the torque. I think I need 2 pliers to try. I can see the clogging piece but I can't do anything as it looks super hard. Apparently my grinder was working fine until it started all of a sudden to make a rattling sound. I am trying to clean it but I can't remove the basket yet. I need some luck!
I am so happy as my husband managed to dislodge that piece of hard whatever material it was. I thought it is metal, but after removing it didn't really look like metal, but still very hard. Happily after that stuck stony thing was removed my upper grinder could be easily taken out. I cleaned my grinder, and my baby works again. I am also glad I have the 820 as this one has a metal impeller that looked untouched. I wonder why on Earth did they ever try to do a plastic one. I wonder if you can do a metal impeller. But I think that needs a different approach as I don't think the 3D printers can work with metal yet.
Hello friendo, i need some help i have a problema with my BCG800xl it gruonds the coffee but not in Fine position for expresso, it doesn't come out, i am in Colombia and i can't fing support here for breville, i dont know if is the impeller OR the upper and lower Burr, Many thanks
i was just wondering why this impeller worn out so fast? Can this be improved by performing a more frequent internal thorough cleaning and flushing out the harden coffee powder which caused by the oil that sticks on the wall ?
Hello! I fixed my impeller, but it still grinds slow/smaller amount of beans. Perhaps I did something wrong. I did end up having to sand a little bit of the impeller to make it fit easier. Any suggestions would be great!
Hi! In Russia this coffee grinder sells as Bork J800/J801. They may be a little different from Breville, but the problem is the same. It`s quite often issue. Thanks for the video! Now i think we could solve the problem. If it`s not hard for you, could you add information in the video description about same issue in Bork J800 and Bork J801. It is realy hard to find info for those grinders! Again, thank you!
Inserted your replacement impeller and whilst it has restored the grinder's functionality considerably it also shoots the grind all around the receptacle and creates a mess :-( Any suggestions for addressing this greatly appreciated :-)
Hi Len, This step here usually fixes it: www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800XL+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/62905#s134179 Additionally, very dark roasts sometimes cause this as well. See here: www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800XL+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/62905#s169171
What kind of filament did you use to print the spare part? Our grinder for the little coffee shop at school is having this issue and we have a 3d printer. Would it be worth trying to 3d print our own and having me fix it?
Hi There. I got the part and followed your excellent, detailed instructions (thanks!) but it still makes that ratchet sound. I've watched beans go through it and it spins and works fine at a more coarse setting. But as you crank it up to a finer setting it's like the burrs get jammed and start ratcheting. I noticed during the repair that the nut on top of the upper lower burr wasn't super tight when i went to take it off. I was able to remove it by hand. And then when I went to re assemble and put the lower burr on, I felt like it was sitting a little high. Because I've taken that burr off and put it back on a few more times it seems like it's sitting about flush now. I thought maybe the issue was a height issue. I'm at a loss! If you have any ideas, I'd be all ears! Thanks again!
Hi David, It might be a torque limiter problem. If you can find your way to the gearbox, you can take apart the torque limiter gear and stretch the springs inside it. Also adding a drop of honey in between the slip plate and the gear helps. Together that should bring the torque slip threshold back up to par. See troubleshooting here for a little more info on this (The torque limiter is the big gear on the left in the pic): www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800XL+Grinder+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/62905#s134181
I'm not able to put back the main gear. The big white part. I line it up with the correct slots but it keeps popping out. Any suggestions. I mean it's pretty straight forward but I won't hold
Oh I just cleaned mine for the first time and noticed that they are metal which you do mention in your written tutorial. They clearly don't extend to the wall like the original plastic or yours. It is actually so far away from the wall that it seems like it might be able to be removed without taking off the machines case. I have no idea if the impellers being so far away from the wall is a good or bad thing.
You should be in good shape. The newer BCG820XL (As opposed to the BCG800) thankfully has a stainless steel impeller design. It's sized to the chamber it's in and for the speed it spins at. The chamber dimensions and RPM may be different for the BCG820XL vs the BCG800XL so it's not easy to compare the two.
Does the 820 have a metal impeller. What other changes are there please? That would eliminate this problem it seems. Love the very creative fix offered here. Very much appreciated and a great video. I would still appreciate knowing what any upgrades have been made to the two machines mechanically other than the grind range.
I was able to change out the impeller, but my machine has become turbo charged. Goes crazy blowing out coffee everywhere and I think also putting out too much coffee. Only things of note thus far is the upper burr sleeve turns past the lock arrow, and I have put oil in the coffee coming out tube.
I can’t get the gear-ring to come off. Any ideas? At around 10 minutes of the video, it’s described as having four snaps; is it possible it attaches some other way in later models?
Did you figure this out, Nick? I can’t get it off either and the parts of my coffee maker are spread across our dining table. That’s going to get me in trouble! Kindly let me know how you solved for this. Thanks!
Don R Trying to snap off the clipped in wheel with no success. My 22 year old son who is a rock climber (very strong hands) also could not get it to unsnap. Any suggestions? FYI the gear inside mine is black, not white like in your video. My Model is BCG820BSSXL. Thx.
Hi Don, The BCG820 is unfortunately pretty different under the hood, and I am sad to say the 3D printed impeller for the BCG800 is not likely to be compatible. I hope to make a different design when time permits, but it is not there yet today. That said if you'd like to teardown regardless, I believe the black grind adjustment gear mechanism is similar to the BCG600 model, and that video might help guide you here: th-cam.com/video/SoVMNke1tEg/w-d-xo.html
What a great and helpful step-by-step video, but... Help! I have a Model BCGH820BSSXL, which has developed the jamming problem you describe after about a year of moderate use. I ordered the part and got it in less than a week...well done! Your excellent instructions were perfect until I got to popping off the large plastic grind adjust wheel. No matter how much force I applied on any side or all around, the damn thing wouldn't budge. I've tried prying with a screwdriver, but I don't want to try too hard with that for fear of breaking something. Any suggestions? And do you know if your replacement part will work on my model (assuming I can fully disassemble the machine)?
Hi Michael, I do not believe the printed impeller is compatible with the newer BCG 820 model grinders unfortunately. The drive shaft tapers to flat at a different spot. You can still double check though. I think disassembly for these is more likely similar to the bcg600 also (www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG600SIL+Dose+Control+Pro+Coffee+Grinder+-+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/96493) where the adjuster wheel has to be unscrewed. I have been thinking about the 820 and possible solutions for a while. It has a stainless steel clad impeller that should not wear down much. It may be possible to bend the fins slightly with a pliers to get a bit more efficiency out of it and consequently reduce clogging.

not Adapt bcg820????
Unfortunately the 820 is very different so this guide is not applicable there.
Hi Sir,
Will this part work on the Barista Expresso Machine BES870BSXL? Cheers mate!
Thank you from Australia..part and postage $35 AU. Hubby fixed it himself thanks to your video.
Great job George. The BES860 is harder than the BCG800 but it sounds like you managed just fine. Love the review and hope you enjoy your espresso.
Thank you. I did try the veg. oil chute trick as well. But I do have a drier sweet espresso on standby and will try that next. 👍
Didn't have to replace the impeller, but needed to clean out damp coffee grinds that stuck up the grinder and the shoot. Great video. Just saved $200.
Wow, I can’t believe how well this fixed the problem. I was about to throw it away. Thank you very much for the great video.
Thanks again for this, I just had my grinder apart again, regular clean out. And after 5 years no real wear to the impeller
Very well done video. Instructions were clear and visuals were perfect. Thanks for taking the time to create this.
I'm going to pile on and say thanks for putting together this amazing video and making the part available for us to purchase.
Thank you.
Thanks so much for doing the heavy lifting-I just installed a new impeller rather easily, thanks to your video and R&D.
this part is now made of metal, thanks for helping everyone
Great video. Saved me from having to replace a perfectly good grinder.
Just made the reparation,, perfect fit & result...thanks for saving one more grinder from waste !!💯
gottebp, thanks for the instructional video.
Yay! I've found this grinder in the rubbish bin and fixed it, thanks to this video!
Got the part. Installed it. Now works better than new. Thanks a lot!
just replaced mine about a week ago as well and I cant seem to eliminate the terrible new static problem which is sending grinds everywhere. its a huge mess. are you having this issue?
Just fixed my grinder with your part. Plus unscrewed one of the grind setting screws to add a little grind size range. Thank you 👍🙌
Thanks for the video -- this has enabled me to get mine fixed. Had to rush out to buy a #2 Phillips with a 12" shank, but Lowes had those just fine.
I just did mine. Got the 3 D printed impeller off the web. Shapeways. It was smooth and easy. Works great!!
Thanks for the video! I'm now ready for anything my Smart Grinder throws at me!
Great Video ! Thank you. I was wondering if metal impellers are available?
This guide was spot on. Thanks I fixed my grinder!
You.... Legend.... thanks a million mate ! Fixed and sorted.
Thank you!
I have a small felt piece that goes under the impeller. Should I keep it or toss it?
Great video and great 3D printed part! Thanks for the video. Just fixed my old grinder. The Internet CAN BE a wonderful thing....
Super helpful. Got the part and got it fixed!
Wow what a helpful video--instructions are so clear--and a resource for the necessary replacement part too! Thank you so much!!
Hello, your video is extremely helpful but sadly I own a BCG820XL, and the shapeways description said the replacement will not fit my grinder. Do you happen to know to what extent it doesn't fit, so I could maybe alter it and make it work, or would I need to find a different replacement? Thank you!
Crisis averted! Thanks for this.
@@gottebp
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, it's still under warranty. We are under no obligation to deal with Breville in Australia due to the consumer protection laws. The problem and the warranty are for the retailer to sort out. My contract is with the retailer.
Thank you! The 3D printed replacement part and your instructions worked perfectly :)
Great to hear. Enjoy your coffee!
I’m amazed of how people start repairing there tools. It was obvious from the start that if you have opened the round nut on top of the conical burr you would have access to the blade under the conical burrs and not possibly miss up the initial calibration from the factory. Something that you want to consider before changing the 3D printed slider next time.
Quick fix, part showed up fast, thanks for this.
@@roryfiler214 I am having same issue, how did you modify grinder to compensate?
You have got it right. The felt ring should be discarded.
Time code please ?
The drive shaft came unscrewed from the motor side How do i scrwe it back thanks great help
Thank you!! Fixed my machine with your help.
The markers on the gear in mine are not on the same spot, is it important to bring them on the same spot ?
Hi there. I fixed the impeller blades and one makes a whirring sound and the other makes the clicking sound. Any idea what I did wrong?
Saviour of the day! Thanks.
Does it take the same amount of effort to get the gearing ring, white in the 800, off the 820 geraing ring, black?
The instructions where perfect. Thanks
Worked perfectly. Thanks for a helpful video and 3DP!
Hi, how often you perform a thorough cleaning like this in order to prolong the lifespan of the impeller?
Hello friendo, i need some help i have a problema with my BCG800xl it gruonds the coffee but not in Fine position for expresso, it doesn't come out, i am in Colombia and i can't fing support here for breville, i dont know if is the impeller OR the upper and lower Burr, Many thanks
Thanks, if turn that white cylinder to the right , then i will get finer coffee?? Thanks again
i was just wondering why this impeller worn out so fast?
Thanks for the video. Not buying this anymore to avoid the trouble!!
I have aNEW machine and the clacking sound appeared after using some oily beans. Ice cleaned everything, still broken. Help
Thanks. Even though I just got one, I will probably buy one way ahead of time while you still offer it.
@@gottebp Do you know if the BCD820BSS also has the stainless steel impleller or plastic version? Thanks for your great video BTW!
Does the 820 have a metal impeller. What other changes are there please? That would eliminate this problem it seems. Love the very creative fix offered here. Very much appreciated and a great video.
I would still appreciate knowing what any upgrades have been made to the two machines mechanically other than the grind range.
Great video. I just saved about 250 €. Thanks!
excellent video - machines fixed
I was able to change out the impeller, but my machine has become turbo charged. Goes crazy blowing out coffee everywhere and I think also putting out too much coffee. Only things of note thus far is the upper burr sleeve turns past the lock arrow, and I have put oil in the coffee coming out tube.
will it also fitt on the smart grinder pro?
I can’t get the gear-ring to come off. Any ideas? At around 10 minutes of the video, it’s described as having four snaps; is it possible it attaches some other way in later models?
Did you figure this out, Nick? I can’t get it off either and the parts of my coffee maker are spread across our dining table. That’s going to get me in trouble! Kindly let me know how you solved for this. Thanks!
Is it possible to replace stock hopper of Smart Grinder Pro with smaller hopper from Barista or Oracle?
Big help. Thankyou

Trying to snap off the clipped in wheel with no success.
