Along with Raghoba dada, he tried to take down Authorities in Pune. After brief war, Treaty was signed between Maratha and Haider. Marathas had another blow from the death of Madhavrao and assassination of Narayanrao. British tried to use situation take over Maratha influence. Marathas defeated British at Wadgaon. Mysore did not come to help. Rather Tipu marched further into Maratha territory. Due continues wars Maratha Empire wasn't strong anymore. Nana Fadanvis was getting desperate to regain control of lost territories. At this point, Marathas asked help from British. Initially British were not interested, finally, an alliance was formed between British and Maratha against Tipu and Nizam.
The Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-1818) was the final and decisive conflict between the British East India Company (EIC) and the Maratha Empire in India, The Maratha Empire completely ended after the 3rd Anglo-Maratha War. The British completely controlled India

So that explains why local rivalry to Maratha was more important and they did not see the big picture. I don't see anywhere where Tipu backstabbed Maratha, he was killed by the Brits. French military advisers told Tipu Sultan to escape when his fort was invaded via secret passages, but he replied, "Better to live one day as a tiger than a thousand years as a sheep"
