    I have been a hairstylist since 1976. I did not know it took 30 minutes for the bonds to form a curl. Also your new products and texture iron are brilliant. I love your teaching videos and have learned many new techniques during COVID . Yes you can teach an old hairdresser new tricks. Wish I knew these techniques years ago when I was doing 10 blow drys a day! Thank You!!!!

    I just had an "aha!" moment! About letting the curls cool for 30 minutes before manipulating your hair, I can relate. Whenever I use my hot rollers and just leave them on after they've cooled for 30 minutes or more, my curls stay longer than when I remove the hot curlers just minutes after they are no longer hot. Very excellent tip. Thanks VERY much!

      After you curl the hair, catch the curl before letting it drop. Hold it for 5 seconds or so, then roll it up and clip it. Do your whole head let your hair sit in the clips for a while (maybe do your makeup while you wait). Then take them out. Dont brush or pull them apart w your hands. Lots of hairspray, wait till fully dry. Use a tail comb or super wide tooth pick to take apart the sections. Or even just use your finger tips to rub your scalp so the sections come loose. Use hot hot temperature on your hot tool. Consider buying a professional tool, which will make a huge difference.

    Please do a video on curling for gray hair. As you must know there is almost nothing for this huge and growing demographic where women are embracing their gray hair. But they need help with styling in a way that doesn't yellow the hair. Thank you.

    • @StylistKS
      @StylistKS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      twominutetips if your hair is trying yellow, it means the flat iron or curling iron is too hot, therefore burning your hair.

    • @andrewcarruthers5414
      @andrewcarruthers5414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      yes... exactly what @StylistKS said! If yellowing is happening, your curling iron is way too hot! We suggest starting at very low temperatures and then increasing if necessary.

    • @twominutetips
      @twominutetips 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you StylistKS and Andrew Carruthers - I'm well aware of what causes yellowing and how to get rid of it, but I'm looking for any other tips other than not using too hot a tool, passing quicker and not over hairspray or oil. Do you have any?

    • @Bychance37
      @Bychance37 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Maybe wet sets, curls last longer and have more bounce depending on the setting lotion you use.

    Typically hair that is all one length is a little more difficult to curl being that it's all one length as opposed to layered hair which gives more lift because of the graduation of length to help separate and give more body to the hair. Also if hair is poker straight and fine that type of hair doesn't hold curl easily because there isn't any body or thickness to the hair for a curl to hold. I would suggest if you want lasting curls to do it the old fashioned way and either use pin curls, or rollers, and use a setting lotion or curl enhancing/thickening mousse, those two methods will give you a much nicer curl that lasts for days. A curling iron is more to touch up curls. :)

    A TEXTURE IRON!! I think this is what Southeast Asians like myself need! I have super straight heavy hair that I just can't curl. Gotta prep, dry shampoo, curl, set, spray oh lord the effort.. And it still unravels through the night unless you want crispy hair.

      Great point!!! I haven't personally found many products that really hold up in super extreme humidity to be honest... many claim that they do but my wife has very curly frizzy texture and it's the one thing we have always struggled to find. If you have any suggestions that have worked for you, we'd love to hear!

    • @jonified
      @jonified 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I stuck to makeup work for many years but have only recently tried to include hair in my work, so I'm still pretty new to it. We usually "highly recommend" updos to bridal clients who are doing outdoor weddings haha, and explain the scenario to them. I think that's also why classic asian bridal hairdos tend to be so GLUED on and rock hard. I'm finding mousse is a must for me at the moment, but it's far from ideal - still researching!
      Side note: When Victoria Beckham had her fashion week in Singapore and her hairstylist posted "I GIVE UP ON THIS HUMIDITY!" posts hahahahahhaha. I felt their pain - dry weather ppl have it easy! =D

    Ok, I bought the texturizing iron, both hair products, and used the paddle brush. I also let the curls cool for thirty minutes. I did everything you stated in the video and my curls fell out within a half hour! I don’t understand. I do have fine hair but it’s not super fine. I will try again and see if the same thing occurs. This is a great video. How do you set up hair or/and blow dry hair that is very curly to achieve a curl with a curling iron?

    • @andrewcarruthers5414
      @andrewcarruthers5414 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually we will begin with a blow dry to gently stretch out the curl... not too much tension like I said. Then, if you still need to polish the hair as you curl it, pull it tight to the iron as you curl which will finish smoothing it out.

    Use a heat protectant spray with hold that is also humidity resistant, I use kenra 19 and it's a lifesaver for straightening and curling. My hair is already wavy/curly but when I brush it out to curl it nicely it never stayed either without product. If all else fails do a wet set with rollers using mousse or gel, wet to dry styling will always hold 10x better because you are altering the hydrogen bonds. Hairspray is a finishing touch and isn't going to hold a style alone, especially in humidity, unless you use an entire can for helmet head lol. (Never ever use heat on top of hairspray unless you want fried hair, the can says flammable for a reason)

  • @jennifermorris833

    I blow dry out my fine super curly hair, leave it for three days in a pulled back ponytail, then on the fourth day I use a straightening iron to curl it beachy wave style. This works well, and the curls hold, also only curl small pieces, not big pieces as the smaller ones heat thru and curl better. I let it all cool and just lightly finger out the curls. I also use a very sheer hair oil to keep the hair smooth and shiny. As the days go by the curls slowly drop and you get a nice shiny wave. It’s taken me ages to perfect this technique but it works.

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alvina... in cases where the hair is very easily tangled but you want to be very cautious with weight in the hair, there are two suggestions. #1. Detangle the hair while the rinse out conditioner is in and then be very cautious to gently squeeze out the water as to not add the tangles back in. #2. Apply a very lightweight leave in primarily just at the ends of the hair and as minimally as possible ... we really like Redken's One United and it should be ok for very fine hair if applied lightly just to the ends.

      @@samvillahair Hi your reply makes me curious about the "fine processed long long hair". Could there be a chance if someone has over processed hair, or very long hair having been processed for years, that the hair could be very damaged and may not take to styling well? I know I stopped bleaching mine for a while, and after trimming the ends a few times it was much more manageable, so I'm curious if it can at times be suggested to give your hair a chance to "chill out"?

    Is this texturing before curling the hair , is it going to damage the hair?

  • @sooome9294

    the hair you have worked with is straight and I have curly gray hair and frustrated not finding anybody that knows how to cut it. I would like to let it grow longer than it is right now (just below the shoulder), if I go to a new hairdresser all they do is cutting it off above the shoulder and then the curls pull it up even more. The longer my hair grows the curlier it gets, and not all the hair curls the same, some loose some tighter, it is also very fine. Please advise, thank you.

    Yeah mine always holds crimp super well but curls fall so fast. So probably not letting them cool i guess?? I may try it with the pre textured ironed hair (as i have crimped it recently) to see if the curls hold better.

  • @Maddyline1998
    @Maddyline1998 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could the reason be that the iron is too hot? I have fine hair and I use the NuMe Lustrum wands which get to 410 degrees, but I let them cool afterward. Can too much heat cause my hair to hold the curl?

  • @Miyakies
    @Miyakies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Weird is though that I usually curl my hair with a straightener (it’s a good high quality one but it’s pretty old, works perfectly still though!) and my curls last all day. I have very fine hair, nordic hair. So a lot of hair but thin. It curls very easily but recently I bought a curling iron, and with that one my curls barely last an hour. Is it only because the curler is low quality or could it be I don’t have it hot enough? How hot is too hot? 🙈

    I just don't want the crimped look from a texturizing flat iron. How did they do it prior to that tool?

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Textur Iron just helps to add a bit more hold. If you follow the other steps, you should find the curls will hold better. You can also be very light handed with the Textur Iron where it doesn't show unless you get very close to the hair.

    hi, from Philippines 😊 i'm new to your channel and this video is a really great help, Thanks for sharing.
    I just want to ask, what if we don't have that kind of iron ? what technique can we do to give texture on the hair by just using ordinary hair iron?

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. There isn't an easy way to replicate the Textur iron pattern. Try blow drying your hair with just your hands and very little brushing... that will keep the hair as "rough" as possible and that will help to hold the curls :-)

    I have a genuine question: we always talk about using products for our purpose, but we use so much product. Isn't that damaging to your hair over time? I rarely use product, because I don't own that many, but even the ones I do own, I feel like it would damage my hair.
    So, do all these hair products damage hair?

    • @andrewcarruthers5414
      @andrewcarruthers5414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It definitely depends on quality! The super cheap stuff on grocery store shelves can definitely be extremely drying to the hair which could cause damage over time. That's why we always stress the proper product for the hair type and for the desired result. I can very honestly say, I've seen the difference in hair when people invest in awesome professional products versus budget products. Hope that helps!

      good product is the key. You definitely don't always need products for nice hair, don't let people talk you into things for no reason. EVERYONE has unique hair so everyone has a different routine and a different product that works for them. I get a lot of stuff from Lush. They let you try out pretty much everything and they generally have well experienced staff who are knowledgeable. You pay for good quality (not just for you but for the ingredients, no animal testing and great product backgrounds as well haha)

    I tried to do heatless curls for the first time last night by splitting my pony tail into twists and pinning them down before I went to bed but I don't know if I just brushed them out too much when I did my hair today, or if I just didn't do it properly in the first place, but all the pretty curls just seemed to fall out in a couple of hours. Do you think these tips would still help in the case of heatless curls (apart from cooling the curls properly)? Does Argon and Coconut oil count as oils to avoid? My hair is fairly stright and I'm told it's on the thick and heavy side as well.

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's going to be hard to get curls that will stay in your straight hair without heat. Thats the downfall to the technique you explained... it will look good at first but probably fall out pretty quickly. Stay away from too much oil if your trying to get the curls to stay... they are great for softening the hair won't hold the curls as well.

  • @8698gil

    I have very straight, fine hair. Without product, my curls last less than an hour. I used setting lotion and pin curls for lasting curls, otherwise forget it, my hair would be stick straight in no time.

      Your comment remind me of my childhood memory. I have the same hair like you : shiny, healthy, silky, soft, jet black, thick.
      My sister bought a set of curler/hair roller (heatless) to curl her bangs. One day we both tried it at the same time. Her hair worked just fine but mine? Just meh... I looked at her and asked "how did you do that? Why mine doesn't work?" Nothing happenend to my bangs. Of course I was disappointed but after 30 years of my life, I'm really grateful for having this type of hair. I live in a tropical country plus wearing hijab and I've never had any hair problem. Not even dandruff.

      @@hananani3518 i had nearly the same thing happen to me, so like i have very thing straight indian hair which doesnt even have waves in it except 1 random annoying baby hair. so like my cousin sister bought a curling rod and i asked her to try it out on me (cause i loved the thought of having curls in my hair). so she took a small section and used the iron but when she removed it my hair looked exactly the same except like a few strands that just became squiggly. so we tried again waiting longer but the same thing happened. (on a side note she also burnt my forehead while doing this lol)

      @@threambakarajesh9914 You burnt your forehead?! I hope it didn't leave any scar. I usually tie my hair into a bun before wearing my hijab. Even after 8hour+ wearing that bun in my hijab during my working hour, still no curls happen. Not even loose curl. I also wanted to try having a loose curl at least since it look very pretty but I know it's not going to work on me, so why spending a lot of money on the iron curler?
