As a Mexican American, The Williams Bros inspired me to start cycling back in 2019 after reading an article on Outside Magazine. 2024 was my first racing season with a local team and did about 15 races.
The local amateur racing scene here in NYC, much like the people of the city, is actually pretty diverse! You have to get up at 5am or earlier to catch a race in Prospect or Central Park, but when you do, you'll see racers who reflect a wider range of ethnicities and cultures than the professional world of bike racing.
On the train ride back from Poughkeepsie on the first warm of the year, you will see all sorts of people who woke up at 5am to ride from BK up the empire state trail. Prob, the most diverse group in endurance cycling in the country.
@@dwaynebuie2083 For media purposes, if there were every type of ethnicity being represented except for black people, it still wouldn't count as diverse.
It's too bad they didn't interview Rahsaan Bahati, his story and career was influential in even shaping the Williams bros. He is such an inspirational rider and pioneer in the sport for men of color. Not taking anything away from Justin and Corey, they are taking the torch and moving forward
I agree, Rahsaan Bahati was instrumental in being an example for the Williams brothers to follow, to be successful on the US cycling circuit. Ama Nsek, Dante Young, and J.P. Primm are examples of African American cyclists who are making a real impact on the US race scene. And keep an eye on 14 year old LA cyclist Eli Watson, who has multiple national championships in his age category. It’s great and hope the development of African American cyclists continues.
I got into cycling right as The Williams Brothers started their L39ion team. As someone with also a Belizean background, the inspiration these dudes gave me early on was truly special. Even had the opportunity to met the Williams Bros in person few years back. Stand up act.
@PatrickLino You have also inspired many into the sport of cycling through all your amazing TH-cam video uploads and cycling adventures. One of the biggest barriers for some black and minority groups getting into cycling has been the costs of the bikes and related equipment. However, you have shown that anyone can get into cycling on a limited budget and still thoroughly enjoy the sport. We all give you and RobbArmstrong many thanks and appreciation for all that you both have personally done for the cycling community. Thank You!!
I watched Justin win the Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic and it brought tears to my eyes to see all the Belizean people rush him after crossing the finish line. They were so proud of him. Girmay was electric during the last Tour De France. This sport is incredible!
They produce good marathoners because it is a very culturally significant sport. And yes also due to low equipment and infra requirements. Ofc they can do well in cycling, if it is popular enough. This goes for any country. It is not nationality or race depended. Cycling is a big part of European sports culture, running more casually by mid-age office people.
Seriously ABC - do your homework - look at how they race, the way they act, the financials of the Williams Brothers and see just how much $$ they are keeping for themselves, what they drive, the homes they live it while other racers scrape to get by - they are playing the race card for financial gains - they fly to Belize with a crew with their sponsored free bikes to race & beat 3rd world bike racers in their own Country's Nation race -then Cory uses that to go to the UCI Worlds Championship race and gets beat by lesser known country's riders - these guys are a joke & not someone to look up to - they haven't even paid out the race winnings from a race they sponsored back in 2021!!!

The biggest barrier is exposure and a lack of networking. Damn near everyone has to hustle for support, but most don’t know that starting with group rides and befriending a lbs is the way to start.
Cycling has become quite alot more expensive in the last few yrs with the rapid inflation rates and truth is i even know alot of white people of average income who recently stopped participating in bike races, not because they didnt enjoy it but simply just because of the increased cost of the race and travel fees and the general needs for the latest equipment to be equally competitive, which can nowdays be upward of 5 to $6,000 just for an average level racing bike... So based on that i dont see how very many poverty level kids from the hood regardless of their race are going to be rushing into competitive cycling in the yrs ahead.
For those of us who have been cycling for years, the Williams brothers have been killing it for a long time and inspiring kids of color to follow in their footsteps. I'm not sure why you see harm in bringing awareness to facts and a story that attempts to change that fact. You're not inspired? Great. Let others get inspired then.

why are people so obsessed with diversity
What exactly is wrong with inspiring others to dabble in something they ordinarily wouldn't think about doing?
You're not inspired? Great, don't ruin it for others.
Because for most of the history of this country it was obsessed with whiteness.
@@entdmII Yes we need more diversity in the NBA. Right?
Don't know. I don't watch nor follow the NBA and know nothing about the makeup of its players, nor do I care frankly. In case you missed it - this was about cycling, not the pro peloton and not basketball@@Janthonyx

Jesus, I'm not white but I don't talk about my race. I JUST RIDE MY DAMN BIKE!
You're missing the point entirely. This story was about awareness. Let others who aren't you get inspired and dabble in the sport. In these comments alone, you can see many who got on a bike being at least partially inspired by the guy in this story years ago.
Ride, ride....no need to comment here. Ride
@@johnburns4157 I'm riding tonight
No you don’t you size everyone up starting with their race/ethnicity then the bike and their kit. As a person who’s typically the only black person at group rides y’all notice me. A white person can easily slide in, but not a minority.
@tamudawson ya same when I play basketball at the park. I'm the minority
