The same thing happened with the Getty Center. The designers of the garden are not in synch with museum it was a disaster when they opened it. The architects vision had natural stone and stairs with no rails.About 2 years after the museum opened they had lawsuits. The architects vision took a back seat to changes in the practical nature of the museum.
I think this is a valid critique. It’s also very literal for Zumthor. I can imagine his Serpentine Pavilion being a concept model for what this should be: you experience tar, you touch it and it’s complimented by the light gallery space which makes it feel even more tar-like.

It was a travesty that they tore down the beautiful MCM LACMA campus of buildings designed by a Los Angeles architect, William L. Pereira. The campus buildings were beautifully balanced against each other and connected by these walkways that seemingly floated over these pools of water that surrounded the buildings. It was a campus where experiencing the outdoors was important, too. It wasn't simply a way to get into the museum. What ruined the original campus were all the additional mishmash of structures that came later, especially that monstrosity they built right up against the sidewalk creating this horrible cave like new entrance. They should have knocked down all the other buildings except for the original campus and then build new structures that would compliment and honor the MCM aesthetic of the original campus. And, finally, fix the technical issues with the pools which were drained decades ago. I loved tge open feeling of the original campus and it's connection to Wilshire Blvd. The new structure, even after the changes, still feels like a gimmick. What's the point of extending it over Wilshire Blvd? I'm sure the building will draw attention, but not in the best way or for the right reasons. I'm still hoping they can fix it before it's too late. Maybe the issues with the expanse of windows can be addressed with technology. They can use that technology that can make clear windows opaque. Have the wi dows automatically go opaque depending on the amount of light outside. And then at night they would automatically be clear, too. That would be visually striking to see inside the building as you drive or walk underneath the structure. Even the beautiful Walt Disney Concert Hall had its share of issues that needed to be fixed, but now people marvel at it. Let's hope the new LACMA follows in the same footsteps. BTW, it's very cool that this museum will be accessible via the LA Metro in the near future. The subway station will be across the street.
I didn't internal publishing at lacma and a few other things. Lacma was challenging enough to work at before. This change, Doesn't seem to consider the visitors, or the employees who try to make the exhibits a good experience.
