This footage is honestly invaluable. It gives us footage of the largest pre-grouping railway works in action during the pre-WWI era, an age when locomotives could be made and repaired at a rate that seems unfathomable today. We get to see the completion of a Claughton, and what is either a Cauliflower or DX Goods. Either way, it's a treat to see authentic footage of LWNR Crewe in action.

Good footage, thank you! It's a pity that there is only what I can guess is damp damage to the film in places. The caption, "Ready for Work" would seem slightly premature as she has not been painted nor been married to a tender at this point!

And that's how its done. May I commend you on your choice of accompanying music. Although I'm not sure what the connection between Crewe and the Blue Danube is! But if you think about it, the assembly is rather choreographed. But the film finished about 15 seconds short for the finale of the waltz!

The men (and boys) all wear cloth caps not just to keep warm but as basic head protection, except for the foreman who wears a bowler as a mark of status.

Can you imagine what it would be like if instead of the Big 4, there was the LNWR and the Midland Railway; with the other 3 groups?

My Uncle used to wear a bowler hat like the gentleman in the film at the Gateshead Railway Works an awful long time ago. It was only for senior foreman and managers and surprising as it may seem it was invented as a safety helmet. Sad that the men doing the dangerous work didn't have them.

Amazing footage. Over 100 years ago and many of these hard working men would be dead within a couple of years in WW1.

It’s insanely weird to see the motion connect to the front wheel set…

Looking at this footage makes me wonder how many of the men in this film went on to die horribly in the carnage that was the first world war. These workers had little idea that within a year, the kings, the kaisers, the csars, the archdukes and the emperors would be lusting for their final massive land grab of the fading European imperial age. No consideration was taken of the toll it would take on decent ordinary folks like these men and their families. They were just eagre to try out their 'fool-proof' 'mechanised warfare'. Unfortunately it was those leaders who proved to be the arrogant fools they thought they'd triumphed over and it was men just as these and countless civillians that paid the price.

That's not exactly correct. Whilst they may not have known when the First Great War was going to start with Germany there had been by 1913 many years of increased tension between the Entente powers and Germany meaning war was a distinct possibility.

There was no relation between the Claughtons and Black 5's (despite both being built in the same place). Plus, the Claughtons were being withdrawn when the first Black 5's rolled out.
