      Usually they require two men to operate in a handheld shot because they're so heavy, in The Dark Knight during the interrogation scene for example, there is a mistake where you can actually see the two cameramen reflected in the mirror holding the gigantic IMAX camera.

    Informative and well done! In the mid 1980's I attended a meeting of the SMPTE in Toronto at the Cinesphere 70MM theater, where they played the Dream Is Alive and Hail Columbia, on IMAX, and one of the IMAX inventors gave a talk. It really is interesting seeing where IMAX has been used. Far less than I had first thought. I didn't realise The Hunger Games used IMAX, but actually that's a fantastic situation to creatively use it, and one of the few use cases I think you could practically argue that the shallow depth of field and large frame format could be genuinely impactful. In addition to films being IMAX shot that eventually get cropped in post, it always bugs me when the IMAX ratio (even a cropped 1.78/1.90 equivalent) is unavailable for home consumption. IMAX cinemas are inaccessible to so many people, and even fewer are re-running older films that have since left the format. Some directors (like Brad Bird) say they find the changing ratios at home distracting given the brighter environment drawing attention to the edges of the screen, but I find that to be a moot point given this:
    Many👏people👏have👏light👏controlled👏home👏theater👏setups👏and👏projectors
    Are you getting the "true IMAX experience" at home? Of course not, but the expanded aspect ratio is a HUGE creative choice that get's completely wasted when less than 1% of viewers will ever have a chance to see it that way. I don't care if you think my setup isn't good enough to give the "intended IMAX experience", please let me watch your movie the way it was intended to be seen

    There is one other film that used IMAX cameras for vfx use, and I guess you could say it was technically the first fictional film shot in IMAX over The Dark Knight, and that film is The Presstige.
    There was an interview Christopher Nolan gave years ago where he talked about how, in preparation for using IMAX cameras for TDK, he asked IMAX if they could use one of their cameras to test it out and see how they could utilize it in his next film.
    I also remember seeing the Raiders of the Lost Podcast TH-cam channel interview this past year where David Keighley (Chief Quality Officer at IMAX) explained that the cameras were used very sparingly for The Prestige, mostly for a few vfx sequences, but did reveal one of the IMAX shots in the film was the scene where Christian Bales character removes the finger of his twin brother. I highly suggest checking out that interview as David Keighley reveals some pretty cool details about the company.

    • @ChefMattReviews
      @ChefMattReviews 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@ProfessorChocolateCakeOnly a few filmmakers really take full advantage of the IMAX format for it's rich detail and large aspect ratio. Main one being Christopher Nolan who loves working with large format celluloid.
      Most times IMAX is being used now when it comes to blockbusters is mostly for 2 reasons.
      1. The size of the frame which makes the spectacle of the film seem that much bigger.
      2. High resolution. IMAX has a resolution equivalent to nearly 8k and that high resolution lends it's way to more room in post production for visual effects as well as possible crop in on the image.

    • @565paolo
      @565paolo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

And Disney historically doesn’t really care about capture mediums. Exactly, that’s the original point and purpose of the format. Nobody fixated on the square-ish aspect ratio as some sort of spectacular marker until the nolan movies. Historically the more widescreen aspect ratios were the ones that people associated with spectacle. With imax it would have been considered a drawback only worth it for it being large format

      @@Maxpower50000 Well first. They are using Digital Alexa LF cameras at open gate which hasa 4:3 ratio which allows them to get the full coverage of an IMAX asep[ct ratio. Which is 1.43:1. Which is not what this video is talking about, it's talking about which films used IMAX Film cameras not the digital "approved for IMAX" cameras. If that make sense. We have another video we just released talking about all the films taht have been release in FULL IMAX 1.43:1 that includes the Dune films.
      Also, I read that too about it being fully in IMAX 1.43:1 format, but I've heard from others at the 1.43:1 IMAX theaters that it's only specific parts of the film still. Which means sure they could have shot it all in IMAX format, but not used the full sensor. Likely meaning you have some other standard IMAX 1.90:1 shots in there. So it's still all shot for IMAX formats taht you can only see in IMAX theaters

    It’s pretty save to assume that not 40 minutest of the final movie in The Last Jedi ended up being IMAX. It’s probably more likely that 40 minuets of IMAX footage were shot in total for the entire movie. The Last Jedi used a whole lot of formats and is a mix of 50/50 digital and film with cinematographer Steve Yedlin’s custom print film emulation to bring all the footage together.

    You forgot a couple. IMAX has a official 3D digital camera that was made with phantom that is full 1:43.2 and is not like the ARRI such is a ARRI camera with IMAX branding and certification. This camera used 2 phantom 65 camera inside the make 1 3D image and is a official IMAX 1:43.1 camera and was used in Transformers 4 and 5. Also Eternal (the only marvel film to do this) used the 9802 camera for 6 minutes of the film (the hyper lapse scene and the scene where the girl meets the giant dude in the other world). I've actually seen it in 70mm it was jaw dropping.The Lion king used the imax9802 and was full 70mm for 23min (I believe maybe light year movie also). I dont understand what the deal with imax is. Its a bigger screen, i guess? so what? screen size doesnt even matter it just matters how close you are to it. all the imax theaters here only offer tiny exttemely uncomfortable stadium style seating where youre crammed in like sardines so they can maximize profit. it completely ruins the entire experience. it makes it pretty obvious how the entire thing is just a marketing gimmick. im convinced the only reason imax exists is so theaters can charge almost 2x as much for movies. i saw oppenheimer in imax and it was horrible. just so uncomfortable the whole time and it didnt look or sound any different from a normal movie. i saw dune 2 in a dolby showing with a nice comfortable leather recliner all to myself and i dont regret a thing. never going back to imax, why would i? The only truly different exerience ive had is a long time ago seeing a documentary about the moon landings and they played it on this big curved screen that was almost like a dome. thats what Imax used to be, in my mind. but somewhere along the way imax came to just mean "a large screen"
