This video is great! I am a 67 year old woman who lives alone and I wanted to install a video doorbell, but my current transformer did not have enough voltage. Your instructions made it so easy to upgrade the transformer by myself. Thank you for making such a detailed video.
Excellent video! I searched many websites that provided insufficient or confusing information about this issue and none even remotely compared to the clarity and straightforward instruction that you have. Thank you very much!!!
I had an issue when I first installed my Eufy doorbell as it wouldn't even power up. After finding your video and ordering the transformer via amazon and switching out the old one, my Eufy doorbell is now working and it was all because of this video!!!! I am so grateful for you taking the time to create such an easy to follow instructional video. My friend paid someone $300 just have their video doorbell install so you also saved me some money too!
@Chase Morgan thank you so much for checking out our video and leaving these kind comments. We're very happy to hear that this video not only helped accomplish the task, but also saved you money as well!
No one else doing doorbell videos spoke about where the transformers were or could be, so we can't fix it if we don't know where they are. Thanks for answering that very important question!
They can be just about anywhere depending on the age of the home. We've heard of them being above in the attic and in utility rooms on a different floor. Glad you were able to locate yours. Thanks for checking out our video and for leaving us a comment!
I am in no shape or form an electrician but this video made it easy for me to swap out my transformer for my video doorbell. I had a 12V transformer before and this allowed me to upgrade to 16-24V transformer. ADT was very happy with the upgrade to install my new security system.
Super helpful!!! I’ve had the nest doorbell and when purchasing it at Home Depot I was informed my transformer was probably old and I’d need to update it. Long story short I went the battery route and one day when charging the battery someone stole a large, pink rock my grandmother had given me out front during broad day light but I didn’t have the damn footage so I want it hardwired. This was super helpful, I haven’t done it yet but simple, clear and useful instructions so thank you
Awesome! My Nest Doorbell chime stopped working, and after digging on the internet, understood that it's a voltage problem. Now, this video clarifies everything else for me. Clear and conscise. Thank you!
Appreciate the straight forward video. Was able to locate the transformer and swap it it out with a larger voltage transformer to power the new doorbell.
Good video. The only thing I’d say is though some of the older houses have the transformers in the box, code is to have the transformer mounted on the outside of the junction box as they get hot and present a fire hazard. Just be careful and safe guys.
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version th-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. Very interesting to me because around here in NY the transformer is almost always located on the breaker box, or within a foot or two of it, and then low voltage wire is run to the bell. Thanks for showing me this. Learned where to look if I can’t find it!
Yes, lots of different locations depending on regional trends and also ever building and contractor will do it a little differently, so sometimes you just have to look around if not finding it at first.
Thank you for being very informative. My doorbell Transformer is actually in my garage. It took me a while to find it but I looked all over the place and eventually found it on the wall near the ceiling in my garage.
Seriously - YOU are my hero! I did exactly as you showed. I took a screen shoot of the replacement transformer from Amazon and order the exact same one (cheaper now). It was a little Easter egg hunt finding my door bell transformer (I had to remove main electrical panel cover plate - then it was GO time!) On the west coast. Most transformers are located inside a closet of a bedroom or coat closet and is usually located closest to the chime or doorbell that goes ding dong.. On really older homes. They installed it inside the attic which is a terrible place to find and service it.
If you ever decided to get rid of the doorbell camera and go back to old regular doorbell button, would that old button also work with the newer higher voltage transformer you just put in?
Great video. Unfortunately my transformer isn’t behind my chime. If you connect the Ring and it powers up can you assume your transformer is sufficient?

Thank you for your kind words! Sounds like your new transformer did not have a ground wire either, so probably not an issue capping the green wire like you did. Is the new transformer working?
All good points, thx. We've noticed many comments since posting the video that indicate the many locations people are finding their transformers, so hopefully that gives folks some other ideas if they're not finding it right away. Thanks for the feedback and for checking out our video!
Great Video, didn't show it actually working after you were done, also I just changed my transformer and still no internal chime, is there an app setting i need to change? Also ring box with EUFY doorbell?
I couldn’t see it clearly. But the Green wire is Ground; Black is the Hot Wire and White is Neutral. Is that the correct connection? Thanks for making this YT video.
I think I need to do this. I had my Ring Doorbell Pro 2 professionally installed a year ago. About nine months later it stopped working. I called support twice which was a waste of time. My house is new and the current transformer is 16 volt. My Ring app indicated it was not getting power, so I came to the conclusion that I need the 24 volt transformer. This video should resolve my Ring doorbell issue. I hope!
Transformer in our house is made in US by GE, rated at 24V-40VA driving Westminster mechanical chime. I hope when I install the Ring doorbell there will be no issues.
Great video and thanks for the tip on the voltage detector tool, I didn't have one, so I ordered one right away. Great tool to have and once again, thanks for this video. It breaks the process down perfectly.👏🏽
Also should have mentioned there's a difference between a 16v 10va and a 16v 30va transformer. Many times need the 30va if you want both the video doorbell and the mechanical chime to work at the same time.
Thanks for this video! If you are a renter and you install the 16V transformer to be able to use a video doorbell, but then you want to take your video doorbell with you when you end the lease, will the 16V transformer be too much for the existing doorbell that was on the older transformer? or would it be safe enough? Thank you.
It could be too much depending on the old doorbell and what voltage it requires. Safest bet would be to keep the old transformer and out that back in if that's your plan.
excellent video. I figure that my home will fall under the Lower Voltage Transformer like yours. When I get home, I'll have to search for the doorbell transformer and make the change like you did. Thanks for the video
Thank you for a great video! I am having an issue because my existing doorbell transformer is next to the circuit breaker and it's an older model with only 2 wires (no ground) while the new transformer sent by Ring has 3 wires (with a ground). How do you recommend I install this?
thanks for the vid! question: by changing the transformer, would I also need to ensure I have a chime compatible with the 16-24v transformer? or does any one work
The problem I'm running into is extremely small wire. The wire to my doorbell is around 26 gauge. Even if I have the proper transformer, can such small wire handle the volts needed?
Do you have a video for installing a Ring Doorbell with a digital doorbell? I cannot find the transformer in my home and maybe it is part of the door chime I already have.
Thanks so much! Very helpful -I have an Arlo and it wasn’t working because the transformer in our 1961 home is only 10 v 16 V. Question: I Purchased a stronger transformer this week that is 16 V to 30 v And advertised but it’s compatible with Ring Cetera. There are other things attached to the 10 v to 16 v older transformer. Do I just replace it with a new transformer or should I tone the door bell wires out and give it its own 16 v to 30 v transformer?
Sorry for the delayed response. It depends on what else is connected and if that will be enough total voltage to supply to everything. Some homes have multiple chimes or doorbells for different entrances. One transformer would be enough if running a video doorbell and an older analog doorbell for example, but running two or three video doorbells may require a more powerful or separate transformers in order to supply enough voltage to everything. Hope that helps!
Question how do i know what kind of doorbell transformer i need? I bought an Xfinity doorbell and hooked everything up and it wont power on but the video doorbell i had before Xfinity powered up fine,is it possible the camera itself is bad for Xfinity or do i need a more powerful transformer? If i do need. Transformer not sure what voltage i need. Great video btw ! 😊
Great video step by step explained. I have a question: my transformer is in a different room from the chime. I changed it out in accordance with the video and my experience. It is not charging the ring. Any thoughts?
Thanks for watching our video and for posting your question. I would take a volt meter and just test that you're getting the proper voltage to the wires connecting to the doorbell. If no voltage reading then there may be a problem with the wiring and low voltage is sometimes caused when the wire is too long of a run for the voltage to carry strong enough to the other end. You may want to install the transformer closer in that case. If voltage is fine then it might be an issue with the doorbell itself and I would contact Ring about next steps to replace the unit. Best of luck!
Great job--very informative. For life of me, could not figure out where transformer was, but suspect it is behind like you indicated. Will check that out!
you are so lucky that your transformer is in a box behind the doorbell. That makes sense. Mine is somewhere else in the house and I have been looking for it for weeks now. The low voltage wires run down the wall and through a stud. I feel like I have looked every logical place this transformer could have been put. It is a good video, though
Sorry to hear about the trouble locating the transformer. Reviewing the comments on this video, seems others have found the transformer in a myriad of places. I'm sure you've checked in the utility room near or in the breaker box? Some have found it in the attic above the wall where the chime is installed, but sounds like your low voltage wires are running downward. Definitely sounds like a tricky one. I've had similar trouble tracking down other wires in the past and purchased a cheap $30 snake scope / inspection camera to help track things down so I didn't have to open up walls or ceilings to explore further. Best of luck to you and thanks for checking out our video.
Great video! I upgraded my transformer but, I still cant get my door bell to make any sound with the ring. I put the old door bell and it does work but no sound with the ring. Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong?
I'm not sure I follow. If you have existing wires from a doorbell then you'd have a transformer connected somewhere along the line. You need the proper voltage to juice the Ring doorbell.
Thanks for watching our video! We'll have to go back and check that. We review a lot of products and may have had the Eufy wireless chime still setup and go off in the living room since there's also a physical test button on it. One of the kids may have pressed it. 😃
This is a great video. Although I bought a Eufy wired video doorbell. After watching your video I checked for the transformer behind the chime, I don't seem to have a transformer at all. Do you have any other recommendations so I can get the right power to the doorbell. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
I agree with @Dr. SJC, there has to be one somewhere that is dropping the power down to low voltage, it's just a matter of finding it. There are lots of interesting locations you'll see others posting about in the comments here, so hopefully some of those will give you ideas of other places to check. Best of luck and thanks for checking out our video!
First and foremost, always consult with a professional electrician if any doubts, but we can share a few thoughts: Most new transformers will have a ground wire, but some older ones that will be replaced may not. If you have a standard 3 wire electrical cable coming into the junction box then there should be an unshielded copper wire to connect the ground wire to from the new transformer. You can also ground to the side of a metal junction box or conduit if that's what you have. If you have a plastic j-box and no ground wire to connect to then your options are to leave the new ground wire disconnected as the old one was or to run a new ground wire to the ground screw on a nearby outlet or light switch. Hope that helps!
Great video. My problem is, my current doorbell chime doesn't have a transformer like yours does. Would you know if there's a way to hardwire a Ring Chime? I'm not a fan of having it plugged into an outlet.
Having an issue with my Ring Doorbell Pro. Suspect this may be the issue and will take some voltage measurements later today. Do you still require the Pro Power Kit that comes with the Ring Doorbell Pro if I swap the transformer?
Great video. I'm doing a remodel and have wired for a doorbell and three chimes. I've been thinking of getting the Eufy 2k Pro video doorbell. However, Eufy customer support tells me that this doorbell camera won't work with existing chimes. Their installation instructions show how to bypass the installed wired chimes with a jumper. What gives? You appear to be using a Eufy doorbell with existing chimes with no problems. Are they advising bypassing the installed chimes just to avoid the hassle of helping customers upgrade their transformers?
Hi Tom, great question. The transformer drives power to both them chime and the doorbell itself. Therefore, the jumper allows the Eufy setup to bypass the existing chime while still delivering power to the video doorbell itself. The doorbell will come with a separate wireless chime which we decided to plug in behind a couch in our front living room. I hope this answers your question, but happy to explain further if needed.
This is easy enough, my current transformer is rated at 10V. But the problem is the chime itself - it is also rated at 10V. If I upgrade the transformer to 24V, will it fry my door chimes?
Where do the cables from the doorbell go? It looks like you just connected the lines from the transformer to the chime, am I correct? In other words, shouldnt the chime have 4 cables coming in, two from the bell/camera and two from the transformer?
My house was built around same time as yours, had the same looking chime, covered pulls right off like yours, saw the two screws to unscrew it, thought I'm in business, pulled it off and it's just a cable coming out of hole in the wall. UGGH. now for the search to find it! If it's inside a wall somewhere I don't even know how to begin to figure that out other than ripping walls down to try and find it.
Sorry to hear that and hope you are able to find it without much effort. Wish there were building codes for the placement of those starting a long time ago as it seems the transformer is always in a different location depending on the original builder or contractors used. Thanks for checking out our video and wish you the best of luck!
Lol. I havent tried yet, but I think I found my transformer watching this video. I was about to return the Transformer that I bought because I had looked around the house, inside the house and on the attic, but couldnt find it anywhere. 🤣🤣
This video was great. However, I replaced the transformer with the one you provided and it didn't work. I don't seem to be getting any juice from the house wiring. Have any idea what I should do or check for?
@Brian Ruiz, apologies for the delayed response. Were you able to get this figured out? With some more details, we might be able to provide some ideas for troubleshooting. You mentioned not getting any juice, but how far are you getting with the setup and is it indicating too low of voltage or not powering the doorbell at all?
@@TwoNerdEFamilies Hello, I ended up getting an electrician. It turned out that there was an issue with the wiring that I caused on a separate issue a month before. Apparently, while switching out a light switch, I left a wired disconnected and had an incomplete circuit that tied in to the one with the doorbell. Your video was great though. I definitely needed to upgrade the transformer. Thanks!
Great, I'm glad it all worked out and glad the video helped. Thanks for your feedback and for posting your question and the end result. It's bound to help someone else having a similar issue.
Thanks for the video! Is there a scenario where you may have to replace the chimebox in addition to the transformer to prevent any burnouts/ fire issues? TIA...
I’m having a problem with the voltage same as described in the video, can you buy a complete chime box with an integrated 24v transformer. I’m living in the U.K. any suggestions would certainly be appreciated, Excellent video 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
Not sure what's available in the UK, but there are a lot of chime/transformer 'kits' available on Amazon and at local home improvement stores here in the US. Here's an example (link below) of one that I couldn't see the va (volt-ampre) rating for, but comments indicate that it works with Ring video doorbells. Try to find a kit with a transformer rated within the range specified by the manufacturer of whichever doorbell you're installing. Most of them these days require a 16-24v / 30va transformer. amz.run/3yBd
Sigh, mine is installed into the side of the main breaker panel using that ring washer on its side.. It's flush against the plywood behind it, so I guess I have to unscrew the whole panel face off so I can get to it. I turned the power back on as it's getting dark today. I was really hoping mine was behind the chime as well. It's odd as with the current one, my Eufy doorbell doesn't even turn on at all, not even a low power light. I wonder if it's just not enough power or if I have a bad connection at the doorbell. Installation was finicky as the wires are short and tougher copper. They give you extension wires but no space to tuck them in. Lol
That does not sound fun at all, but at least it sounds like you located and know what needs to be done to replace the transformer. You could try a volt meter to see if you're getting any voltage at all to the doorbell. It might just be too low to power it up at all. I would think the wiring is still good unless they ran the wires too far, as power will continue to dissipate the longer the stretch. Best of luck and thanks for posting your comments!
Great video, bought a Eufy video doorbell with it's own chime,my house was left wired for doorbell if I choose. I have a no original chime can I wire straight into a new transformer to reduce from 230v and then connect all the wires.
Thank you. When there is power supply I used voltage tester at the chime and It is beeping as expected but when I used voltage tester at the ring doorbell wires it is not beeping even though there is power. how come? Later when I turn off all the circuit breakers I still see there is light on ring bell. how is it possible?
My current chime in my house is being operated with a 5 volt transformer. I need to change it out for a 16 volt transformer to operate a Ring Pro that I want to install. I'm concerned that a 16 volt transformer will burn out the 5 volt chime that I currently have in my house. So my question is, if my current chime is operating on a 5 volt transformer, won't a 16volt or 24 volt transformer burn out that 5 volt chime ? Or do i need to upgrade the chime also ?
Chime can remain, it just completes the low voltage circuit. The transformer needs to be upgraded to the 16v. If not it will definitely burn out the 5v transformer & your ring receiver.
Nice "nuts and bolts" video! Have an identical chime. Initially by-passed the chime to power a Ring wired doorbell 2021, but wondering if upgrading to a 24V transformer would power both? Being limited to the ring app or having to buy their dedicated chime is not preferred. Would very much appreciate your thoughts. Thx!
Does this fix the problem when our ring doorbell pro says “offline”? We had it for over a year and had no problems until a few days ago. Says the power is level 3, assuming that’s not good/ it’s not receiving much power.
It's somewhere, you gotta locate it. I mentioned some possible locations in the video and there are other suggestions here in the comments. Best of luck!
Very well explained. Thanks. Just a quick question - the video doorbell is infact a replacement for the ringer ? The old ringer is to be replaced with it ? And then it is set up to connect with wifi.... right ? I couldn't find any video that guides well into the connecting a video doorbell as a replacement to the old fashioned bells. Thanks.
Yes, it will supply enough power to also charge the battery. That's a common issue with older transformers that underpower battery operated video doorbells. In those cases the transformer doesn't actually supply power to the doorbell itself, but rather just charges the battery that supplies power to the doorbell.
Hi many thanks for the easy to follow explanation. Would this method work for a house in the UK? Also I know you tweaked the voltage with the transformer. What about the current.
Great video! I measured the voltage at my current bell button as 18V. Should I be OK from an amperage standpoint? Also, there is an unused green wire at my current button. Does that get used by Ring?

Also should have mentioned there's a difference between a 16v 10va and a 16v 30va transformer. Many times need the 30va if you want both the video doorbell and the mechanical chime to work at the same time.
Great tip!
This was good and easy to follow. Bro, you should do more tutorials
Thank you for the feedback!
Best to ground it to the junction box in this case.
thanks for the vid! question: by changing the transformer, would I also need to ensure I have a chime compatible with the 16-24v transformer? or does any one work
Best to replace it if you don't know the voltage requirements of the old chime.
Thanks for the video. Successfully replaced my transformer and our doorbell works now.
Great video. Clear, concise and to the point.
The problem I'm running into is extremely small wire. The wire to my doorbell is around 26 gauge. Even if I have the proper transformer, can such small wire handle the volts needed?
That's a small wire! Be careful
Big help! Thank you
Glad it helped!
Thank you! You just saved me $100+
We love to hear that! Thanks for watching our video.
We found ours in a closet
They can be just about anywhere!
Great video! I upgraded my transformer but, I still cant get my door bell to make any sound with the ring. I put the old door bell and it does work but no sound with the ring. Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong?
We have the same problem ! We can’t figure out why it won’t work !
Without the transformer, would the existing wires still work with the doorbell? I don’t have an existing chime, so will use a Ring door chime.
I'm not sure I follow. If you have existing wires from a doorbell then you'd have a transformer connected somewhere along the line. You need the proper voltage to juice the Ring doorbell.
My old system has no ground wire. Did you connect your ground wire to a copper wire or another white wire?
Very helpful! It sounded like the doorbell chimed at 4:47, but the power was dead - are my ears tricking me?
Thanks for watching our video! We'll have to go back and check that. We review a lot of products and may have had the Eufy wireless chime still setup and go off in the living room since there's also a physical test button on it. One of the kids may have pressed it. 😃
2:45 too
This is a great video.
Ours is in a closet
@@jen-jac It's usually located in the basement or garage along the wall.
Great video!! What if I don't have a ground wire hook up?. 🤔 I only have the black and white wires
First and foremost, always consult with a professional electrician if any doubts, but we can share a few thoughts:
Most new transformers will have a ground wire, but some older ones that will be replaced may not.
@@TwoNerdEFamilies Awesome. Thanks. It works fine
Glad it worked and happy to help! Thanks for posting your question.
Very good explanation
Great video.
My problem is, my current doorbell chime doesn't have a transformer like yours does.
Would you know if there's a way to hardwire a Ring Chime?
I'm not a fan of having it plugged into an outlet.
Having an issue with my Ring Doorbell Pro. Suspect this may be the issue and will take some voltage measurements later today. Do you still require the Pro Power Kit that comes with the Ring Doorbell Pro if I swap the transformer?
Did you figure it out?
Learned a lot from this video thanks.
@@TwoNerdEFamilies If the jumper is not used, will the existing mechanical chime work/chime?
Thank you, very helpful right to point.excellent video.
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have video how install this door bell. I bought one but I don’t know how to do ???
Did you figure it out? Lots of videos online for that.
This is easy enough, my current transformer is rated at 10V. But the problem is the chime itself - it is also rated at 10V. If I upgrade the transformer to 24V, will it fry my door chimes?
Possibly, but those are easy and inexpensive to upgrade if needed.
Do I need to still jump the existing chime after I install the new transformer
Yes!
Good clear presentation 👍
Thank you 🙂
Good Video ! This is exactly what I was looking for .
Actually I think I found it, looks to be attached to the outside of the breaker box.
Sorry to hear that and hope you are able to find it without much effort. Wish there were building codes for the placement of those starting a long time ago as it seems the transformer is always in a different location depending on the original builder or contractors used. Thanks for checking out our video and wish you the best of luck!
Great news!

Hello, I ended up getting an electrician.
Greatly appreciate this. Quick and easy.
Glad it helped! Thanks for checking out our video!
Thanks for the video! Is there a scenario where you may have to replace the chimebox in addition to the transformer to prevent any burnouts/ fire issues? TIA...
Just got a Nest Hello. Video works fine but the chime won't chime no matter what I do. I think I'll try this!
Get a digital volt meter in VAC. Test to see if the meter reads over 16 to 24VAC.
No it doesn't matter which lead goes to which.
Thank you for this video..
I’m having a problem with the voltage same as described in the video, can you buy a complete chime box with an integrated 24v transformer.
I’m living in the U.K. any suggestions would certainly be appreciated,
Excellent video 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
Not sure what's available in the UK, but there are a lot of chime/transformer 'kits' available on Amazon and at local home improvement stores here in the US. Here's an example (link below) of one that I couldn't see the va (volt-ampre) rating for, but comments indicate that it works with Ring video doorbells. Try to find a kit with a transformer rated within the range specified by the manufacturer of whichever doorbell you're installing. Most of them these days require a 16-24v / 30va transformer.

Did you got an answer to your question? What voltage transformer did you use? Thanks
Bump
That can certainly be a power issue related to the transformer.
my doorbell chime does not have an old transformer like yours behind the chime box. is this right?
It's somewhere, you gotta locate it. I mentioned some possible locations in the video and there are other suggestions here in the comments. Best of luck!
I have a Lorex doorbell cam and an electronic doorbell. Is there a transformer for electronic doorbells?
Very well explained. Thanks. Just a quick question - the video doorbell is infact a replacement for the ringer ? The old ringer is to be replaced with it ? And then it is set up to connect with wifi.... right ? I couldn't find any video that guides well into the connecting a video doorbell as a replacement to the old fashioned bells. Thanks.
What's the labor price for changing a doorbell transfer
$1 million dollars! You'll have to call a local handyman, that's going to vary widely.
Thanks for the video! Definitely what I needed.
Thank you for posting such a helpful video!
What brand transformer did to purchaseto replace the old one with
Link is in the description if interested in the same one. Thx!
Will this upgrade charge ring door bell battery ?
Yes, it will supply enough power to also charge the battery. That's a common issue with older transformers that underpower battery operated video doorbells. In those cases the transformer doesn't actually supply power to the doorbell itself, but rather just charges the battery that supplies power to the doorbell.
@@TwoNerdEFamilies ok 👌 ,
Hi many thanks for the easy to follow explanation.
