- DC Comics are in a lot of trouble after their top writer quits Batman & Robin and Green Arrow. Josh Williamson has been DC's workhorse since James Tynion and Scott Snyder left 3 years ago. Penning many of their best-selling comics and fronting multiple events. Fans paying attention noticed DC were putting an enormous amount of pressure on Williamson to keep DC afloat while every other talented writer left. It appears Williamson is taking time off for family and opportunities outside DC, presumably in the Energon Universe. Wes explains why Josh Williamson pulling back on his DC Comics work is the worst possible news for DC. DC's top writer quits Batman and Green Arrow comics!

The amount of good writers left at the big 2 are getting fewer & fewer by the day, shocking that anyone is still reading this stuff.
Yikes. They need to lean on Jeremy Adams, Mark Waid and maybe PKJ. Those guys put out true DC style content.
Except Mark is about to fall with their next event. The sales projections look terrible thanks to him opening his mouth again

Here's an idea - how about DC just put '94 on the end of all of their titles and pretend that everything since Zero Hour never happened?
Geoff Johns, Tomasi, Tynion, Williamson, Abnett, Jurgens,Venditti,etc. Some of those are gone and the other ones are writing crappy miniseries.
Meanwhile DC became Tini Howard and Tom King company. Chip Zdarsky trying to be Grant Morrison and writing a trashy edgy Batman.
I wish Dan Dido never became EIC in 2017/18.
Only ones writing good stories are Jeremy Adams and Mark Waid(piece of trash).
They should give Venditti something high profile - and more Jeremy Adams!
Grant Morrison's Batman was already trash.
Zdarsky really just picked up all of Morrison’s worst ideas (one’s that even Morrison himself didn’t expand upon) and brought them to the forefront of the story.

Personally I hope this leads to Joshua Willamsons writing Skybounds G.I. Joe book. His Cobra Commander was a major surprise, he brought Cobra-La back into the conversation. No one thought saw that coming and he does a great job with villains like Cobra Commander, Destro and Baroness(even if she working with Duke)

Or clock king. Writers are always busy reinventing Batman villains (or just writing joker stories) but neglect all the other villains. I like to see a writer reinvent the GA rogues gallery

Joshua Williamsons best titles have been his non-superhero / original titles like Birthright, Nailbiter, and Ghosted. I’d like to see him get back to those original ideas.
Birthright was a fantastic series!
My wife loved nailbiter. It's one of the few series she's collected in its entirety. I gave it a try, not bad, but not really my thing. A little woke but not so heavy-handed it ruined the book.
his flash run with godspeed and black hole and stuff was pretty good apart from the final few issues

It’s not surprising, that is a shit ton of books to write monthly. Green arrow, Superman,Batman and robin,Duke, cobra commander, dark ride addition to working on all those crossover events of the past year.
That is too many plates to juggle and still try to put out quality work.
Same thing happened to Jeff lemire years ago he had a ton of books come out and burnt himself out doing royal city

Sadly, his ability to write has been hampered by health issues. Don't know if or when we'll see him writing a monthly title again.

Oh, you scared me. I thought Jeremy Adams had left. Williamson is only ok.
I understand, I don't like it, but I understand why he was carrying so much. DC has a barn full of terrible writers. Whomever can write competently, at least, should get the most work. It goes into them hiring people because of identity, or "out of the box" thinking, when they can't do a standard arc right. When companies think hiring someone who has never seen or analyzed the material is a plus, they constantly fail. DC has so few actually talented writers, so I'd expect, if someone was doing a decent job, they'd have to carry a major workload. Most of the other clowns there can't write anything good.
It’s all just friends hiring friends over there. People like Tini Howard got in because Bendis was bringing in other failed Marvel writers, Tom King got a job destroying popular characters like Batman and Wally West because his mommy was an executive at WB, Jim Lee became EIC because Dan Didio worked with him a lot, etc.

I liked Williamson’s work on Death Of Justice League into Dawn Of DC from what I read the writing focused more on hero’s more than identity politic. I agree with alot of your takes on current books however I disagree with you on Detective I’ve been loving Ram V’s writing on Detective and perhaps he can step up to fill the void. ❤ the channel thanks for the content.-J

He fixed Green Arrow after 15 years of continued editorial fuck ups.
His Superman run has been really good, best since Tomasi/Gleason, fixing what he his allowed to fix( he pretty much give up on Jon Kent and almost avoid using him) showing a love for the Triangle Era and even the Loeb/Kelly runs. Sadly it keeps getting interfered by shitty events every 6-7 issues that slow the pacing of the book.
How Josh fixed Green Arrow?

While DC keeps rearranging the deck chairs - again, again and again - they keep ignoring the competent folks who have been telling them that Captain Cold apparently has come up with really big new weapon.............. and.... I believe I hear a violin starting to sound somewhere across the icing deck..... It's the Fiddler, stringing up a mournful strain of nearer my pink slip to thee....
I really hope Jeremy Adams takes over writing Batman and Robin.

I can't image the big companies aren't going toAI. They've seen it and tried it, and it gets better quick. There's almost NO way they aren't, regardless their public statement. No way the companies that rely on creative content creation would be losing big talent without the hidden agenda to go major AI. Generate content, almost free ofcharge, without healthcare, benefits and salary and can turn out content 24hrs a day , meet all timelines. They can say what they want - no way they aren't exploring it - they could turn out 100 books a month and pay almost nothing - no way they aren't considering it.
I just read Williamson Batman and Robin and dropped after 5 issues. Very boring comic. And I don't read your Green Arrow book I undersand that he wanna to relieve your workload, your Superman run is pretty decent but not great. DC need to hire better writers and get rid of hacks writers like Tom King.
DC needs to cut off all current lines and do a hard reboot. Not another event to change the status quo a little. Just scrap everything and start up again with a universe similar to rebirth. Get rid of all the Tom King damage. Alfred is alive, Tim isn't gay, Damian and John are the same age. No Thomas Wayne or Jor El lurking around. No more Super Joker. No more Deadpool Harley Quinn. No Amanda Waller taking over the world. Just stop. Run inexpensive classic reprints to keep people interested until you can get some real talent in writing and editing. Sadly it won't happen. DC isn't going to be around to celebrate 100 years of Superman.
Alfred dying is one of the few things that has actually allowed the character of Batman to grow and change. Bringing Alfred back at this point would honestly regress the character. Tomasi did a good job with some of this stuff, like Batman having to head home halfway through patrol to let his dog out to pee or actually having to keep a stocked fridge so his kids don't starve. He now has to grow and do more as he no longer has his safety blanket. Alfred should be like Gwen Stacey, keep them dead so it actually means something.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson - I think he'll be fully out at DC once the War Journal story is over. And they should really try to keep him. Give him an Aquaman book. Aquaman hasnt had a book in so long. Hes overdue. Otherwise give him Nightwing or a Suicide Squad book or JSA. He could be fun for any of these.
Dan Jurgens should write a Justice League book. Maybe he doesnt want the workload but man hes so well respected and consistent I think he could restore so much fan-goodwill.
Tom Taylor is one of their names but I dont like most of his in-continuity stuff. Give him Green Arrow. Anytime he's written for the Green Arrow family in elseworlds or out of continuity stories theyve been good imo.
Mark Waid, meh, his attitude is awful but my goodness ill trade Mark Waid and get Tom King off Wonder Woman. I think Mark understands Diana WAY more than Tom King does. Go let Tom King be a producer on some movie or something. Get him off Wonder Woman.
Just stick Tom King on Harley Quinn. No one reads Harley’s solo series anyway…

As long as Tom Taylor, Chip Zdarsky, Tom King and Tini Howard are still employed as writers for DC Comics comic books, DC Comics comic book super-hero characters will continue to be written in shitty stories.
Mark Waid's employment isn't going to last. His epic Absolute Power story is going to cave in, collapse and implode just like every other major crossover event that the main DC Comics Universe/Multiverse has had happen in the last 9 years. DC is in the same fucked up boat as Marvel. The rot is setting in.

It seems whenever a writer does any critically acclaimed Batman or Batman adjacent book in DC, they overburden them with projects. They did the same to Scott Snyder.

The Skybound G.I. Joe and Transformers offers actually make me want to buy comics again. I'm not so sure about Void Rivals though.
He's a thought: DC made sure he was stretched too thin, so it would bring down the Skybound Joe stuff, rather than raise the quality of their own books. - This is within the realms of possible, based on all their other horrendous, deliberate, decisions.
I think if he approached either Batman or Green Arrow in the same way he approached Cobra Commander then I think it would be good. That book was interesting and exciting and had some stakes. Same with Duke. If he could have a villain in the same way that CC was and pit him against Batman I think it'd be interesting. I've been reading BaR and while it's not terrible it's just kinda meh. If he snazzed it up Cobra Commander style it would be really good. I don't know if it's DC not allowing him to do that or what.
Shush is another fine example by DC of picking a horrible name for a character. No way if I was editor I'd let that one go by. Get back to the drawing board on that name. Can someone explain why Green Arrow is working with Amander Waller??? Completely out of character for Oliver. You know if his name was not so out of favor, Green Arrow is a title that Bendis would fit into nicely. Especially with an artist like Maleev, Sorrentino, or possibly the Luna Brothers paired with him. Granted he'd actually have to deliver real action (unlike his first lack of action go around in the DCU), but I could see him doing something that fit the character and his writing style. But the man is so dead in the water right now for creative it wouldn't happen. WTF20.
Dude, if DC would care about fans, then they would recton Damian and leave the drama out of Batman. Catwoman, Tim Drake, Talia Al Ghul (pre Morrison) and in general every sane Batman fans don't like his character and his origin.
Agreed. No offense to his fans, but I don’t like how they forced him on us and keep insisting on him. I saw a video one time about how they have him do unbelievable feats expecting us to go, “Wow, he’s the greatest character ever!” instead of, “They’re trying way too hard.”

@@Dion1605x I heard that Talia was made a rapist because the writer couldn’t be bothered to check the graphic novel that inspired Damian. I didn’t read the actual comic in question, but I saw a magazine interview in which the writer said, “Yeah, I thought she had drugged Batman and he wasn’t fully conscious when they had sex, and that he was wearing his costume at the time, but I re-read the series afterward and I was wrong.” Yep. Talia was made a sexual predator because someone misremembered and couldn’t be bothered to check the source material until AFTER the comic was made (and the editors either didn’t notice or didn’t care). I have a Batman book with the scene of Bruce & Talia getting ready to consummate their marriage and I honestly don’t know how someone could have misremembered it that badly. It sounds like the writer confused the graphic novel with another work (Maybe that infamous comic with Nightwing and Tarantula?), but that’s another reason the source material should have been checked first.
@@karaoconnoraliasraidra Yes and Morrison's own personal problems. Morrison was a kid when his parents got divorced, like Talia and Bruce. Even the Batcow panel with Damian announcing that he is a vegetarian is based on Morrison. Damian is a self insert of Morrison.

DC comics has really been declining since the 2000s ever since they fired a lot of their best writers and artists it's gotten even worse now they have not been able to reach the same kind of success that they had back in the '80s and '90s because everything they put out now just doesn't compare to what they had back then All they have hired is a bunch of activist now who don't respect these characters or their history is all about pushing political agendas and pandering to an audience that don't even read comic books at all they seriously need to fire the people they currently have and bring in people that actually have a understanding of these characters and their history

It seems like superhero comics are particularly hostile at the idea of introducing new characters for older rosters.
I blame the amount of freedom writers are allowed to have, it makes actually building anything exceptionally difficult.
( I mean for example, does anyone remember "Punchline" or that gun slinger that showed up in more recent "Superman" books. )

Time for DC to hire Mary Sue fanfiction writer who never read DC comics, who introduces self-insert character that recites the author's personal views. Green Lantern and Batman fall in love with said self-insert superheroine, then all three drink coffee, discussing socio-political issues of interest to approximately three college protestors. If you don't like that story, don't read it, you mean fans. Purchase the comic as a Special Collector's Edition, or else you shall be CANCELLED.
Knowing that the companies don't want to spend any money, why not dump the concept of the "star writer", spend the bucks on an artist and have the fanboys submit stories for free?
I bet there's 10 years or more of solid Batman stories that would not only stay true to the character, but be better than anything anyone has put out on Batman in at least 3 decades.

Not really surprised about this as Williamson seemed to have been writing so many books at DC as well as being the architrct behind (failed) events that the bunrout was inevitable. As well as his books going down in quality even ones with his pet characters like Damian. I'm still disappointed how he handled Deathstroke Inc and ignored most of Slade's own family that wasn't Ravager or his Super Special OC Respawn who was more created fot Damian. There's a rumor that Williamson actually hates Deathstroke and will keep him dead as long as he is at DC so wonder if he has less presence at DC means for that.
I do hope for the better for him and it does seem to be more fun at Skybound, especially the love for the Transformers and GI Joe properties than current DC has for most of their characters. It really is a shame he is considered one of DC's best partly because how depressing DC's current talent pool is. No wonder they seem to be coaxing back some older talent.
