i have to say that Pastora in 2012 was AMAZING!!! getting 10th place was absolutely criminal. i still can't get over the fact that those grandmas from Russia got 2nd place and Pastora got 10th. also i think Edurne in 2015 deserved a higher place. i liked her a lot but that year was pretty hard. there were a lot of great songs.
About Chiquilicuatre, we totally gave Eurovision the middle finger with him, actually, the charcter and the song were thought as a joke by a really well known humorist here in Spain, but ey, we knew we were going to end with really shitty results no matter what song we chose, so we decide to have a good laugh about it all at least xD
you probably dont give a shit but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Bjorn Douglas i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thanks, but we do not always deserve it. The blunder in 2018 was our fault. "Malo" was the best choice in the national contest. Search for the song, you will understand everything.
Yeah, in 2008 we sent that like a joke because in Spain we have an inside joke of winning Eurovision, like: “we won’t win anyways so we don’t really care” and that year just went too far. The thing is: we joke about it but we really enjoy watch it and make comments about it. Thanks for the review though. My favourites are Anabel Conde, Pastora Soler and Amaia and Alfred.
We have been so underrated, I agree some songs are really low quality but I would say that we have master pieces!! "Eres tú" is one of the best songs in Spanish ever!!!
Right! "Estoy aqui" by Rapahel also was a massive hit. "Gwendolyn", by ulio Iglesias, "Bailar Pegados" by Sergio Dalma and "Nacida para Amar" re-recorded by Luis Miguel as "Amante del Amor"and became a hit. Song was written by the same author of "Eres tu". The others were famous for other songs, tho.
Thanks for your excellent review, Matt. I am the first one to admit we have sent some trash songs over the years but we are soooo underrated when we’ve sent quality songs, it is frustrating at times. I wish I am mistaken but no high hopes for 2019 either. I loved Tú canción and Amaia & Alfred’s performance in Lisbon but there were too many external factors that sank their song to where it ended (i.e. wrong decisions by Spanish delegation regarding staging, hectic promotional tour prior to the festival, etc). At this point I ignore if something’s been learned from that. Our 2019 representative will also come out from this year’s Operación Triunfo edition, which doesn’t fancy me much. Let’s see how underrated we end. Thanks again for your great review and superb objective Eurovision channel.
Thank you for your kind words. My fingers and toes are crossed for 2019. While I'm not a big fan of the Operacion Triunfo system either, I'm trying to be optimistic.
In 2008 we didn't really give the middle finger to Eurovision, we more like gave the middle finger to the public tv channel that selects the songs, because it was the first year that they let us choose the song and I think the general opinion was that the few last years were crap lol so we just sent something bad but funny ahead to at least have a bit of fun instead of just cringing xD Ironicaly it ended up in a higher position that those past songs.
I'd like to say in 2008 they made a public voting system to choose which spanish song will go to the contest. Since we have send tons of great (and no so great) songs to the contest and never got a deserved place we decided to show Europe our middle finger. That's what happened. We didn't win (of course) or got a "good place" but we enjoyed it a lot!.
Dear Matt, my thoughts are 1) I LOVE Spain at ESC with very few exceptions, 2) I almost always agree 100% with your comments on ESC songs, and 3) you are wonderful and I appreciate very much ESCunited and everything it does for us ESC fans out there. WELL DONE and KEEP UP the good work! Greetings from Paris xx
You never do! You are super professional and subtle even in your I'm-not-too-crazy-about-it comments, and I am sure everyone appreciates that. To contact you via a private message, can I use the info email address?
Omg! I still remember so clearly Rosa's year with Europe's living a celebration! Such an exciting year and she had such an amazing voice. Love that song!
Well, that's a literal interpretation of the song (which is not exactly what she mean it). It's curious because the song was absolutely hated in Spain when it was selected, but with the perspective of the time i think it was not that bad at all. Everything went wrong that year, she even had some accusations of racism (she was forbidden to wear the original dress, and of corse she was not supposed to perform barefoot)

Raphael, Karina, Mocedades, Sergio Dalma,Paloma San Basilio, Azucar Moreno...and a a few more of those artists were huge in Latin America also. Some of thoe songs had comercial success. You should react to them. Raphael is a legend.
I can explain you what happened in 1965: today is weird, but in that times, the singer didn't move far to the microphone, this was forbidden, and she dance a little. She sung a mix between a traditional music style (copla), and modern music. She is the same woman who sung in 1961. In 1961, he weared a typical dress (but without the arms), which usually are very, very heavy; around 30 kilos, with a large tail. If you see the original video, she downstairs with that like if she didn't wearing nothing. And she was the first Conchita in Eurovision, Conchita Bautista. About 1968, Massiel won because the jury knew she had less than a month to prepare all, learn the song, and all, so she received more points for that. In the beginning, that song was for Joan Manel Serrat, but i the last minute, he decided to sung it in catalán. Of course, Franco wasn´t agree, and he was banned (and have a lot of problems), and they quickly must to find another singer. Massiel left her tour in Mexico for that.
1990 How come you first think I'm trash? ;) This flamenco Still give me goosebumbs and it's grooving. It sounded good even with tape confusion in live without vocals. :)
Spain is one of my favourite countries in the ESC, even though ultimately Spain hasn't been really up to it. Bandido is still one of my all time favourite entries, and my number one spanish entry. Other gems are Estando Contigo, En Un Mundo Nuevo and Vuelve Conmigo. And the fact that Paloma San Basilio ended far down the scoreboard is still unbelievable to me. Then Spain sent 4 brilliant uptempo songs in the consecutive years 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 - my personal favourite being Dime (but yes, Beth did not do a very good vocal performance). But ever since 2004 Spain has only managed to place 10th twice. A top 10 IS still a good placing. It's true that Pastora Soler did an amazing vocal performance - but unfortunately her song was quite generic. I really liked Say Yey - but the staging...uff... Come on Spain - I am waiting for another great entry! It's been so long.....
Los mejores de España para mí, son las dos veces de Raphael, Mocedades, Karina, Rosa López, Ruth Lorenzo, Edurne, Daniel Diges, Lucía,1984, Azúcar Moreno, Anabel Conde, Sergio Dalma, Pastora Soler, Ramón, David Civera......
Great video, as usual. I was wondering how long UMG would let your video stay up and then I saw your solution. It is really a shame that they are such a**holes... They have just flagged my pre contest review of all songs from way back in April... Keep up the good work and you nearly gave me a heart attack when you said you hated Vuelve Conmigo. :)
I might be a little biased since I'm Mexican and spaniard. But Spain has been robbed on so many occasions that it's criminal now. Especially in 2018 and 2012, I want them to win another contest. It's been too long.
My question is who you think should represent Spain for next years contest? I would love to see Edurne come back for another try. I absolutely loved her song in 2015, and I think with some small tweaks, I think it could of possibly won or be at least top 5. But near the bottom, I thought it was too low.
Well, I can't say I'm a big fan of the current format where a Operacion Triunfo contestant will go to Eurovision. Spain needs a better system with a fair jury panel that isn't corrupt and biased. Otherwise, they may just pick internal again.
Let's just hope we don't get a repeat of 2017. Just saying. I think they're trying though. I think this years entry should of at least been at least in the middle. I thought it was a cute song to be honest. But I do agree that they should of had the runner up to the contest.
Great review, agree on most opinions. Think the biggest robbery was Say yay, it was a clear contender to win and is a song that still keeps growing quite a lot on youtube, didn't even remotely deserve to end up near last. Beth is a great vocalist, but Dime was pretty much the opposite of her usual style so it felt a bit out of place, and she even said that she didn't really like the song lol. And Chiquilicuatre, some people are commenting that it was deffo a middle finger, and while partially that's true, I think it was mostly something like a "don't have the balls to send a joke song to eurovision" "hold my beer" moment. Was mostly about having a laugh.
Yeah... Manel was... forget it xD Aún me da rabia toda la injusticia que hubo ese año. El público no quería que fuera, queríamos que le fuera mal en eurovisión y cuando hizo el gallo fue como.. bien! Buscamos el último puesto xD Muy comentado jajaja Thank you for the vídeo. Greetings from spain ^_^
Raphael is one of the most famous singers in Spanish history. He's still in active. I'm a great fan (I'm 34) and my mum was too. I don't like La, la, la either.
Have they ever considered making a major motion picture about the 1969 contest; the one that ended in a 4-way tie? BTW, I have a toothpick that held a piece of Manchego that Edurne was offering samples of at the Eurovision Village in 2015.
Hahahahaha thank you for the video... so nice .... I think Pastora Soler deserved the firs place , not for been Spanish, for her amazing amazing voice she is so talented artist
2008 Chikilicuatre was a middlefinger to Eurovision, for sure. After Rosa, Spanish people had look to Eurovision just like a funny request for political reasons and Chikilicuatre was so asked to go when he showed in a humoriatic program, Buenafuente. I'm sure that year everyone was looking Eurovision laughing at it.
The problem with Eurovision fans and commentators is that they listen endlessly to each and every song before the contest and over analyse. What you fans forget is that the overwhelming percentage of Eurovision viewers, and therefore the ones who vote, hear each song once, on the night of the performance. after that they forget all the songs with the exception of maybe the winner and perhaps their national song which they cannot vote for. Ask any British person to sing a few lines from a British Eurovison entry during the last twenty years and they'd be stumped. I believe it would be the same in any other country if they haven't had a winner.
You should listen to the original la,la,la wrote and sang by Joan Manuel Serrat. The lyrics are different. It was a protest song. The type of music you like it was in fashion in the 2000s but now doesn’t work.
I get up in 3 hours but I don't care, I'm gonna watch this right now. I'm from Argentina. Spain is one of the countries with the most amount of Eurovloggers and they all have very different tastes.
got to say im not very into what happened from 2000 backwards, but from that moment, I think Soraya, Edurne and Barei were SO underrated and they deserved a so much better place in the finals. and of course Ruth Lorenzo and Pastora Soler deserved a top5 place (2012 was a VERY TOUGH competition, Loreen really deserved to win that year, and the Russian grannies were too kistch to let them go). Rest of years the places Spain got were fair, mostly with Son de Sol, Las Ketchup, Manel and Amaia & Alfred, those were terrible songs to send to Eurovision
We should send more chiquilicuatres and even worst songs/performances until people's ears bleed (LOL), because we will never win anyways so who cares...
i have to say that Pastora in 2012 was AMAZING!!! getting 10th place was absolutely criminal. i still can't get over the fact that those grandmas from Russia got 2nd place and Pastora got 10th. also i think Edurne in 2015 deserved a higher place. i liked her a lot but that year was pretty hard. there were a lot of great songs.

@Bjorn Douglas i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.

@Bjorn Douglas it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Iker Emanuel no problem :D
Spain was my favorite in 2018 and it will always be my Favorite Eurovision song
From Ireland 🇮🇪
I live there too I live in the South though
So boring
I'm from spain and i respect you like it but spain in 2018 sucked
Thanks, but we do not always deserve it. The blunder in 2018 was our fault. "Malo" was the best choice in the national contest. Search for the song, you will understand everything.
Yeah, in 2008 we sent that like a joke because in Spain we have an inside joke of winning Eurovision, like: “we won’t win anyways so we don’t really care” and that year just went too far.
I really like Vuelve Conmigo too!
Pastora in 2012 was PERFECTION!
Yes, in 2008 Spain gave Eurovision the middle finger. And I think and I hope that soon we are going to repeat it.
You review was spot on but as many spaniards already have, I have assumed that no matter what song we send to Eurovision we will never win again. :-(
In 2008 we didn't really give the middle finger to Eurovision, we more like gave the middle finger to the public tv channel that selects the songs, because it was the first year that they let us choose the song and I think the general opinion was that the few last years were crap lol so we just sent something bad but funny ahead to at least have a bit of fun instead of just cringing xD Ironicaly it ended up in a higher position that those past songs.
That's true. Well I'm glad it wasn't against Eurovision. Lo baila José Luis, lo baila bien suave
Baila chicki chicki
I'd like to say in 2008 they made a public voting system to choose which spanish song will go to the contest. Since we have send tons of great (and no so great) songs to the contest and never got a deserved place we decided to show Europe our middle finger. That's what happened. We didn't win (of course) or got a "good place" but we enjoyed it a lot!.
I love how you love 'Mocedades' HAHAHAH💛
1978 Bailamos Un Vals by Jose Velez was the best song of 1978 and my third favourite Spanish entry ever.
Dear Matt, my thoughts are 1) I LOVE Spain at ESC with very few exceptions, 2) I almost always agree 100% with your comments on ESC songs, and 3) you are wonderful and I appreciate very much ESCunited and everything it does for us ESC fans out there. Omg! I still remember so clearly Rosa's year with Europe's living a celebration! Such an exciting year and she had such an amazing voice. Love that song!
Totally agree with your opinions about the entries of my country. Except... lady lady. It's one of my favourite entries of Spain hahaha.
Good video ^^
Thanks for sharing!!
Great review! Agree in most points, especially when you mention other songs with potential in some of our recent national finals. Keep the good job!
2012 criminally robbed winner!
1973 too
In 1983 she was singing about losing her boat
Well, that's an important subject matter!!!!
I love this pure and traditional song!!!! And for Spain not winning in 49 years...well, they should have won in 1973 too with Eres Tu.
La mejor canción de España ha sido Eres tú de Mocedades, éxito en las listas de Estados Unidos en español, en 1973.

How can you not love Manuel in 2017 when he went off key! One of my favourite bits.

Come on Spain - I am waiting for another great entry! It's been so long.....
Pastora needed so much more than she got. Robbed.
The advertisement in this video was a Spanish Trailer with Vivo Cantando in the BSO... wow
Dude i love your analysis!! 2012 best song EVER
Los mejores de España para mí, son las dos veces de Raphael, Mocedades, Karina, Rosa López, Ruth Lorenzo, Edurne, Daniel Diges, Lucía,1984, Azúcar Moreno, Anabel Conde, Sergio Dalma, Pastora Soler, Ramón, David Civera......

Keep up the good work and you nearly gave me a heart attack when you said you hated Vuelve Conmigo. :)
I agree with you! 60’s were awesome!and 70’s even better with Karina and Mocedades!and Su canción!
I voted Spain in 2012. Stunning performance cannot understand why it didn’t do better.
Bandido, mi canción favorita de todos los tiempos y siempre fue y sera moderna. Saludos desde Serbia
A este hombre le gusta mucho lo flamenquito y las moviditas.

1968 is such a guilty pleasure
I loved Amanecer by Edurne. I think she was totally thrown by that wind machine, killing her makeup.
Me ha encantado el repaso. Ahora conozco canciones que no conocía jaja
Rapahel for the Win 66 & 67 🙂
so much energy on stage.
never stop to listen to him and these songs.
Yeah...
Thank you for the vídeo. Greetings from spain ^_^
From Ireland, Alfred and almaia were the best, loved them
Raphael is one of the most famous singers in Spanish history. He's still in active. I'm a great fan (I'm 34) and my mum was too. I don't like La, la, la either.
My favourite is 1996. Such an ethnic and fascinating song :)
Have they ever considered making a major motion picture about the 1969 contest; the one that ended in a 4-way tie? BTW, I have a toothpick that held a piece of Manchego that Edurne was offering samples of at the Eurovision Village in 2015.
Vivo Cantando is THE best Eurovision song ever, hands down.
Pastora & Annabelle were my to faves, but I still think Secret Garden were deserved winners, I also loved Beth, Sorya & Eris Tu.
When you want, I tell you what it was, what it has been and what it is about the representatives of Spain in Eurovision.
You know you're early when the video has no views 😂😂
9:17 Esa es la abuela de un amigo mio.
Enserio!!
I like 1961, 1965, 1968-1970, 1973-1974, 1977, 1981, 1983-1985, 1988, 2002
I wasn't even alive when "La la la" won. But I really like that song.
same here. I love "La La La" and Massiel's performance of it!
Please, read the lirycs of "Brujería". Good video, greetings from Spain💜.
I love 2011,2012,2013 and 2016.
You should listen to the original la,la,la wrote and sang by Joan Manuel Serrat. The lyrics are different. It was a protest song.
The type of music you like it was in fashion in the 2000s but now doesn’t work.
SORAYA IS A QUEEN, NO MORE TO SAY ABOUT IT
I loved Coral as well.
Ruth lorenzo 😎😎😍😍😍
Hola from turkiye..my favourite 1982 lucia el and azucar moreno bandido☺
Ruth Lorenzo ❤❤❤
In 2012 they have started to take it a little more seriously
Spains entry in 2018 were my favourite! Sadly it didn't won. 😭
Talking about Bandido: "When this came out 15 years ago...". Try 30 lol.
Spain shared its victory with 3 other countries in 1969 in Madrid, and we all know Franco bribed jurors in 1968, so....
1966 and 1967 are the same guy
WoW! I did not know, I did not know it!!!
Yep
I get up in 3 hours but I don't care, I'm gonna watch this right now. I'm from Argentina.
Spain is one of the countries with the most amount of Eurovloggers and they all have very different tastes.
Gracias por mencionar a España aunque cantemos mal jejeje es solo un concurso.
Si cantamos mal porque ganamos es el 68? ARRIBA ESE ANIMO
Creo que nos merecimos ganar en algunas ocasiones del siglo pasado
The song Spain had in 2003 sounded like what Greece had in 2001.
Serafin Zubiri is blind. I think everyone forgot about it.
Nicky no, es Micky, el corrector....y no vito, sino cito, ...From Spain.
I want you to review Romania's Eurovision journey. Please!
There's no wedding in Spain where you don't listen the 1978 & 1991 songs!
Hey you have to react to bulgaria too
Hey, may I suggest France, last big 5 country ? :)
Quedate esta noche is so much better in its studio version...
2013 was actually great apart from the shaky vocals... if anything is an uninspired composition it was dancing in the rain
Spain also hated Do it for your lover, the audience did not choose him.
got to say im not very into what happened from 2000 backwards, but from that moment, I think Soraya, Edurne and Barei were SO underrated and they deserved a so much better place in the finals. and of course Ruth Lorenzo and Pastora Soler deserved a top5 place (2012 was a VERY TOUGH competition, Loreen really deserved to win that year, and the Russian grannies were too kistch to let them go). Rest of years the places Spain got were fair, mostly with Son de Sol, Las Ketchup, Manel and Amaia & Alfred, those were terrible songs to send to Eurovision
In Spain eurovision isn't the same than before. Because we always have bad positions with goods singers and better with el chiquilicuatre
We should send more chiquilicuatres and even worst songs/performances until people's ears bleed (LOL), because we will never win anyways so who cares...
In 60' we were punished by Franco. Europe want to say to us that they were not agree with a dictatorship
21:20 HAHAHA yes please
You like better many of those songs nowadays because Spain was ahead of its times. 😉🤣
How about Netherlands?
despite the blunders the Spaniards care about eurovision, before anyone saw it
