    Thank you for this video. After I went back to work, I’m July at 6 weeks pp, I still made 5-7oz every 2-3 hours until I got pericarditis out of no where in September. I spoke to the IBCLC at the pediatrician office and was recommended to pump every 2 hours for 48 hours and every 3 for 24 hours around the clock regardless of when I breastfed. It worked and I got my supply back and then 2 weeks later, my baby got sick with rsv and did not stay on the breast for long and since we were on vacation, I had trouble pumping to keep up. Now I’m breast feeding at 8:30a, 11a,1p and 3p, and 5p. I get about 4 ounces the first, 3 oz the second and 2oz, and 3oz on average. Then for bedtime, I’ll breastfeed the baby to sleep and offer a couple ounces of formula to fill him up just in case. He either drinks 2 ounces or nothing. At daycare, he drinks 2, 6oz bottles and 1 formula bottle. I’m trying to get rid of that one formula bottle. I think I can do it with your tips.

      Hi momma! ❤️ I’m glad that it’s helpful.
      I’m surprised that your IBCLC didn’t explain this but at around 8 weeks postpartum, our milk regulates down to just what baby needs. An exclusively breastfeeding baby who eats from the breast will take is an average of 24 ounces every 24 hours. This amount is for babies from 1 months to 6 months old. (After 6 months, it may stay the same or increase up about 4 ounces) If baby is feeding from a bottle, they are usually over fed unless baby is given the bottle, using a Paced Feeding method. It’s usually ok for baby to take in more but can sometimes be hard on their tummy. Causing extra gas pains. Their poop will sometimes look green or goopy. It can also be a lot of work and sometimes impossible for a mom to keep up up with unless she has a forceful letdown/oversupply.
      If baby isn’t having any issues and you’re able to keep up, that’s ok. Formula fed babies do increase their ounces at they age. Breastmilk intake stays the same because breastmilk is utilized more completely.
      Sorry I’m so long winded lol. ❤️
      Do you think that baby is getting much more than that? Is baby doing well with that? At 6 months he’s probably done really well. 😃
      Here’s Paced Feeding Video if you’re not familiar with that.

    Mary - love this! Do you have any videos about how to build a frozen storage? I am feeding baby at the breast but would love to start building a supply for when I’m not around.

    • @marycahillclc
      @marycahillclc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked through my videos and I don’t see that I’ve done that video. I’ve covered it on a Facebook video but forgot here. Thanks! I’ll work on that next couple of week ❤️
      I want to say that when I cover this topic, it’s not popular because I am not a believer in a large freezer stash to use at work if you still want to fully breastfeed on the weekends because it will eventually start to drop your supply. A freezer stash should be mainly for emergency use only. An emergency would be if you have to be away from baby unexpectedly or on a medication that wasn’t compatible for breastfeeding. A mom may want to build a freezer stash If they know that they’re going to start a medication that won’t be compatible with a Breastfeeding, they’re going to have surgery soon that won’t easily allow for breastfeeding or it just won’t work to pump at work.
      To keep us supply up, you must pump as often as baby eats and at around the same time. In the beginning, you will still want to nurse baby on your days off but after time is it I will drop if you aren’t pumping at work, as often as baby eats. An exception to this rule would be if you have a forceful let down and over supply, but doing a lot of extra pumping will make that conditioners worse.
      There you go for my thoughts about freezer stash. I’ll get off of my soapbox on that. Lol If you still need or want a freezer stash, here’s a bit on how;
      Be sure to pump slowly in the beginning and especially when you’re done and want to wean back down.
      keep pumping times, consistent in order to have enough supply to do both Breastfeeding and pumping extra (or just pumping enough for baby if you are an exclusive pumper).
      Pumping in the morning will always give you a larger volume of milk, but it will have slightly less fat so it’s good to do some evening pumping but realize that it’s normal to get a very small amount in the evening.
      Know that babies who are fed from the breast, take in an average of 24 ounces every 24 hours from one month to six months old . Babies older than six months may take in a few as they are adding some solids. That usually goes back down to 18 to 24 ounces when they are more fully on solids. When babies are fed breastmilk in a bottle much more than they need. This will waste milk, because baby can’t utilize that extra amount. It won’t hurt baby, they’ll just Pee poop it out but it’s difficult for mom to keep up to pump enough to be wasted. If baby is peace fed. (I have a video on that.) they won’t be in overfed with a bottle. Mini daycare facilities won’t pace feed because it takes more time.
      Adding heat and massage will help to increase your pumping output. Adding lots of breast massage before and during pumping will also greatly increase your supply.
      You can pump at a time that you know baby doesn’t usually want to nurse again or you can pump about five or 10 minutes after a nursing session. You’ll learn what works best for you.
      Depending on the age of your baby, how often they eat, will determine how much you should store in each bag. I recommend starting with small amounts because you don’t want to waste it. If baby will be with a daycare person, that’s willing to add a little bit more to a bottle instead of heating up a whole bag would be best but many daycare centers aren’t willing or able to take that much time. (it won’t hurt for baby to get cold milk and they don’t usually mind it.)
      Oh boy! I had many more thoughts on this subject than I thought I would. Lol That’s a lot to go over for you, but it’s hopefully a start. Watch for the video in a couple of weeks. Again, thanks for the question.❤️

      @@marycahillclc this is so helpful! I guess I didn’t realize that having a frozen stash isn’t even really necessary. I have just seen a lot of moms with that. I don’t intend on stopping the breastfeeding and will be able to pump at work when I go back (8more weeks maternity leave) so sounds like I can just keep it fresh? If you were going to wean at some point, do moms ever try and build up a stash to use after they stop or most people just stop completely? Thank you so much for your thorough response!

    5:06 - mini power pumping tip is seriously great. Pediatrician said my son is getting enough; his weight increased 2 ounces per day so technically double. He is 16 days old. But during night he would continue breastfeed for 3-4 hours and that is very tiring so we usually give him 15-20 ml formula and than he sleeps afterwards other than that he is exclusively breastfed. That makes me think should I follow the mini power pump schedule or this habit of his will improve. I really hope you see this comment and respond 😢

    • @marycahillclc

      Hi mommy! Congrats on your new little one! 🥰
      It’s very normal for newborns to nurse almost nonstop. Its a good thing that they wake and eat often but it’s very tiring when it’s in the night. You might be able to encourage him to do this cluster eating a little earlier in the evening. You can do this by offering the breast every hour for 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed.
      When baby cluster feeds, they aren’t getting much more milk in ounces but they are getting slightly more fat.
      The awesome thing about Breastfeeding is that baby adjusts for just what they need.
      It sounds like his weight gain is doing great!
      It’s OK if you want to continue to give baby formula. I’m not at all anti-formula but I just want you to know that it works differently. Formula doesn’t digest as easily or as quickly. This is why baby will sleep longer when they have formula. You have to do what works best for you.🥰 It will get better though. Eventually he’ll sleep a little longer. 😴.

      I would not over do it if possible because it can be a lot of work and stress.
      Remember to be consistent on time. That’s when you’ll see better results. Also, keep in mind that you will start to see results after 3 to 5 days. It will keep increasing a bit from there but in the 1st days it will feel like a waste of time. Remember that we make more milk in the morning so don’t be discouraged with very low volume in the afternoon and evening.
      If you want to PP more often, you’ll need to do it around the same time every day and if you drop powering pumping sessions, wean off slowly. Suddenly stopping can cause clogged ducts. 💕

    • @marycahillclc
      @marycahillclc  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can do once or twice a day but that’s a lot of time. The important part is that you need to do this extra pumping at the same time every day. If you choose random times, you won’t see much of an increase.
      How much milk do you usually pump at a time?
      Is baby being pace fed with the bottle?
      Are you able to pump at school?
      It’s best for your supply if you can pump as often as baby eats but that’s not always possible. So if baby normally eats at 11 AM and 2 PM, it’s best if you can pump at around the same times. Then baby will receive that pumped milk, the very next school day. Using fresh milk that was pumped within the last few days is best when possible. Frozen milk is still great but it loses a little bit of nutrients. Frozen milk loses most of the immunological properties. ❤️

      Yes, you definitely want to still do lots of skin to skin. Your body will react to baby on your skin and tell your body to make more milk.
      You know when you see a picture of a chocolate chip cookie, your mouth might water? If you smell the cookie, your mouth will really water? This is a physical reaction that your body does to make saliva to start to break down that cookie 🍪 When you see, smell and especially touch (skin to skin) your baby, hormones are physically released that help you to make milk.
      Be sure that you’re pumping on a regular schedule. You might get the same amount if you pump 3 hours as you do at 2 hours, right now but it will start to reduce supply if done consistently. Does that make sense? 💕

    Excellent video! my baby is 2 months old, he wasn't getting enough weight the first month so my doctor told me to give him formula and I did. I tried to avoid biberon but finally I gave it, so since 3 weeks he doesn't want to take my breast (he cries every time he's at my breast or sometimes he does just nothing), now I am obligated to pump my milk out if I want to continue the breastfeeding. I have tried the mini power pumping but I think there is not a big change, I pump maximum 1 oz every hour and sometimes even less (i can pump 4 oz in the morning but after more than 5/6 hrs without pumping the night)
    I would like to give my baby only my milk, even if he doesn't love my breast anymore and I have to do exclusively pump. That's why I would like to increase my production. He eats minimum 3 oz every 2 hours, he definitely asks more I can pump, so he can't get enough with only my milk.

      You can usually get baby back to the breast after a nursing strike/not wanting to latch. I have a video on that I’ll link here for you if you want to check that out. Baby at the breast is the very best way to make more milk. You can make more milk by pumping/power pumping but it’s important to pump at least every three hours during the day and at about the same time every day. So you can’t go a longer stretch some days. Waiting several hours to pump will start to greatly decrease your milk supply. The milk doesn’t get stored up when you go longer stretches. It might be a little more the 1st or 2nd time that you go a longer stretch but then your body will greatly decrease your supply.
      It’s normal to be able to pump more milk out in the first part of the day then in the evening. Your milk in the evening is less in volume but has slightly more fat in it.
      The stimulation part is huge for making enough milk. Babies mouth on your breast does the stimulation the very best but when you are doing power pumping you need to add lots and lots and lots of breast massage. Massage before and in between the pumping sessions.
      I know this is so hard mommy! You’re doing a great job! ❤️

      @ you are pumping almost twice as much as an exclusively breastfeeding baby needs so you can definitely cut down to every 4 hours. You must have lots of milk stored, correct?
      Baby’s from 1 month to 6 months old who are exclusively breastfed, take in about 24 ounce (720 ml) of breastmilk every 24 hours. After 6 months, some babies continue to take in that same amount and others will just naturally take in a little more every day. Probably around 100 extra ml a day. So baby will be getting plenty of fresh breastmilk. You probably not have to store extra anymore.
      Babies from one month to six months old only need breastmilk. Babies from 6 to 12 months should start to have small amounts of solids added every day, but breastmilk should still be babies main source of nutrients their body just cannot absorb nutrients from solid food yet.
      After one year of age , solids should be baby’s main source of nutrition, and solids should be a compliment to that. So your toddler, after one year can continue to have lots of breastmilk for as long as you would like to continue pumping.
      Just so you know, You sound like you have a condition called forceful let down/over supply. This often causes mom’s to not be able to feed from the breast unless they are able to get their condition under control. If you have this condition with one baby, you will have it with all of them. Is this your first baby? Did you know about this condition?

      Power pumping can be very helpful. Be sure to add lots of breast massage with it. But the very best way to increase supply is by having baby on the breast as often and as long as possible.
      A great way to increase supply is to nurse on both breast, then give a small amount of formula, then nurse on both sides again, then finish the formula if baby is still hungry. I have a video on that. I’ll get the link for you. That’s a lot of work but it works well. ❤️

My baby is 3 months and we've been supplementing with fórmula. My supply is low because baby had jaundice and was very lethargic plus baby had a poor latch that i did not catch early on. So we have had to supplement with formula. Baby latches on regularly but does not stay on for very long. I would like to increase my supply to decrease the formula some. It is why I want to know how often you can mini power pump.

      Hi mommy! It would probably be helpful for your supply, to just do a pumping after each nursing session. (I hope I’m understanding the question 🥰)
      She might be taking in enough in those 5 minutes. You can apply heat before nursing sessions, that will speed up your letdown.

      Be cautious with this amount. It can sometimes give baby excessive gas and other problems because we have more lactose in our milk when we have so much more foremilk.
      Also, you’ll need to be sure to not suddenly skip pumping sessions. It can increase your chances of a clogged duct. When you’re ready to cut back on the extra pumping, just cut down pumping by a few minutes at a time ❤️

    • @marycahillclc
      @marycahillclc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be the taste but it can also be how fast/slow the flow is or baby may not like laying on that side. You can try laying back or a different position to see if that works. Baby might also take that side when sleepy.
      You can’t change the taste on just one side. Your milk in general can taste different if you eat strong tasting foods like garlic but babies usually don’t mind.
      The good news Is that it’s totally ok to just nurse on one side. Moms who have lost a breast can totally nurse their baby and moms with twins can totally feed their babies with just 2 breasts. You can try to increase supply on that side but it’s really not necessary. The side that baby does like, will produce more.
      You can increase supply on that side baby adding massage and pumping but I wouldn’t let it cause you stress.
      Does that help? ❤️

      I don’t know that I would start power pumping yet but I would increase your day pumping and get a longer stretch at night. 8 to 12 pumpings every 24 hours but try to get a 4 hour stretch at night if possible.
      Let me ask some questions first. 10ml every 2 hours is a low amount at 1 weeks pp. How was delivery and recovery for you so far? Is this your 1st baby? If you have older babies, how was your milk supply with them?
      What gestational week in your pregnancy was baby born at? Any idea as to how long before baby can come home? Are you able to hold baby, skin to skin in the NICU?

      @@marycahillclc Hi Mary, thanks so much for the quick response. I delivered by c-section, at 22+6 weeks. It’s my first pregnancy, and recovery has been rough, still unable to walk for more than 5 minutes. I’m 130kg with really big breasts and I’m sick of everyone commenting at how strange it is that my big breasts could produce so little. Docs say baby will stay around 4 months before they can come home, and yes I am able to kangaroo him every other day. We alternate days with the father. At the beginning I used to get more milk with my hands, but the nurse advised that I stick to the pump, but its been low since.

    • @marycahillclc
      @marycahillclc  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delphaze I’m sorry that people are saying that to you. Size absolutely does not matter. Some moms with very small Breast could have an oversupply.
      Hand expressing can usually get more milk out and even faster than a pump once mom gets used to it. It sounds like you are very good at it. Also, hand expressing adds more stimulation than a pump. More stimulation helps to maintain and increase supply. I think it would be good to go back to hand expressing. If you choose to use the pump, (or even with hand expressing) apply heat and massage both breasts for at least 10 minutes before pumping.
      If you’re not becoming engorged, you could do, a mini power pumping. This would be to pump, massage for 10 minutes then pump again. Be sure to do this at about the same time every day. I wouldn’t do thin more than twice a day.
      Also, keep in mind that you’ll get more milk out in the first part of day. Then you will at the end of the day.
      It takes 3 to 5 days to even start to see an increase in supply so be patient.
      It’s a very slow process to recover from a c section. It’s a major surgery. There are times that mom can have a retained placenta but that now very common in a c section. When it is retained, mom will have extra blood loss and sometimes low milk supply. You are probably just recovering normally but it’s alway good to see your doctor if you feel like you’re not doing well just to be sure you’re healing properly.
      Delivering baby so early can also affect milk supply. Before 30 weeks can make milk production slower in the beginning. I would pump every 2 hours (2 hours from when you finish one pumping until you start the next). One 2 hour stretch at night will be ok but I would do more than that.
      Congratulations on your very tiny baby! Get some rest when you can while you’re waiting for baby to come home. ❤️

She was gaining well but they didn’t want to drop the formula. I kindly told the medical team that breastmilk is more completely absorbed than formula so it would be a better option. They weren’t happy about dropping the formula but they reluctantly agreed to try and she made great progress.
      I’m not sure how your baby’s condition is. There can sometimes be a valid reason to keep baby on formula but often it’s not necessary. @@LeMary1208 it’s good to be consistent on times that you pump in the day. If you’re trying to get some extra milk, maybe pump every day at 9am 12pm and 3Pm.
      Remember that baby is very best for increasing supply. Feed baby on one breast as long as possible then, when baby seems about done, switch to the second breast. If baby will, even switch back to the 1st breast. Let baby use you like a human pacifier. 😁
      To wean from formula, trust your baby. Feed from both breasts (as long as possible on that 1st side the switch to the 2nd side). Give baby a small amount of formula (maybe half of what you usually give), then back to the breast. You’ll have a 2nd letdown. Then offer the 2nd half of the formula. Trust baby. @Mary Cahill, Certified Lactation Counselor thanks Mary. In my case the pediatrician told me to not let baby on breast more than 10 min in each side because after that he would be burning too many calories (doesn't make sense to me when everyone tells me to keep baby on breast as much as possible). I can only do 1 power pump session at 6pm because I have no support, and I can only power pump when my husband gets home in the evening. I find very challenging pumping in the middle of the day because my baby won't be happy if i put him aside for pumping so long. I also always fear that he will demand the breast in the middle or right after pumping when i just emptied my boobs (happened couple of times and it broke my heart). I'm so discouraged to learn that only one power pump won't do much for my milk supply.

      One power pumping will still be effective. You can only do so much. If that session is at around the same time each day, that would be best. Doing it about 20 minutes after you nurse would be good. If baby did get hungry, you can always give what you just pumped.
      Did your doctor want you to nurse 10 min each side, each session? Generally it’s best to nurse on one side as long as possible then go to the 2nd side. This gives baby slightly more fat by staying on the first side longer.
      Also, if you’re power pumping is in the evening, it will be great but you won’t see much milk because we have slightly less in the evenings but what we do have, has slightly more fat in it. So pumping in the evening is good, you’ll just get less out. Babies also tend to eat more often in the evenings so baby may want to eat right after a pumping.

      @@marycahillclc I’m really unsure if I have a forceful letdown, but I might because sometimes I notice a little milk leaking from baby’s mouth once the milk lets down. I saw this a couple of weeks ago and started to question if I had an oversupply. Baby is 6 weeks and will be 7 weeks old on Tuesday. And typically I only pump an extra 10 ounces if I’m around baby to nurse all day; which I personally don’t think that’s a lot as to why I want a little more. But I do have more than 30 bags of milk in freezer right now with ranges from 2-4oz in them mainly. My days are a little busy with 2 under 2, so I came to the conclusion that my power pumps if I’m going to stick with it, is easier to do in the late evenings once the kids are down for the day.

      @@kenieshasmith9192 10 extra ounces a day on top of fully breastfeeding is almost half of what baby takes in a day so 10 ounces is a lot unless it’s in place of feeding from the breast.
      If you have a forceful letdown/oversupply and you do extra pumping, it can have a negative affect on you and baby unless you get it under control. The possible problems could be; for you, clogged ducts/mastitis For baby, slow weight gain or high weight gain. It’s most often slow weight gain. We don’t worry about high weight gain. Baby will sometimes suffer with lots of painful gas, often misdiagnosed with Reflux or dairy allergies. Baby will often have green or frothy poop. Are you seeing any of those?
      If you have this condition, you’ll have it with every baby but each baby will handle it differently.

      @@marycahillclc Good to know and So far I haven’t noticed any negative effects. No clogged ducts or mastitis. Baby is gaining weight fine, but he was also a big boy when born. His bowels are the normal mustardy looking color when he does go. I do notice that he passes a lot of gas though.
