This is a surprising response. If a prepaid debit card allows his wife a sense of comfort, doesn't cost more, and helps them stick to a budget, a better question is, why not? Also, to me, this was a reasonable and politely asked question, but unfortunately, I can't say the same for the response.

Businesses can encourage shoppers to use cash by reducing what customers hate about paying cash - getting lots of coins. Businesses can say we only give change in quarters and dimes and round up your change if we need to. It encourages cash use by offering a small discount and reduces the change we have to carry in our pockets. No more "leave a penny - take a penny" bowls. Purchases over $20 get change in quarters only. Purchases over $50 get change rounded up to the next dollar. IMHO, it's an easy way to encourage more cash use.

Been doing cash envelopes for years and never took a whole envelope with me to shop. Why bring $500 for groceries when you have a list (purchasing plan) and will spend about $100. Bring just what you need and you don't need to worry about carrying large amounts of cash, except coming from the bank at the start of the month to fill envelopes, or impulse buying.

Cash was the same way at first until I stuck to the plan and controlled my habits.
Then I switched back to a credit card to get a credit history.

Getting the prepaid cards and adding money, monitoring those fees and loading money to the cards...it just seems too much. I can understand the fear of being robbed but the chances of that are so low compared to the chances of paying fees on the prepaid cards, over-drafting and whatever complications come with those cards. Plus the amount we use for cash is not that much stuff. It’s for grocery, eating out, toiletries...it’s not like you would be walking around with cash for the mortgage and car payment. Most of those payments are done with debit cards anyway. All that to say, I agree with Dave. Just follow the baby steps as is caller!

The downside to prepaid debit cards are the fees; however, most prepaid debit cards are insured unlike your cash. If your prepaid debit card is stolen, you can cancel the card and get any unauthorized charges refunded to you. If your cash is stolen, then you're out of that cash. I know you suppose to have an emergency fund, but depending on the step you're on, having a large or any amount of cash stolen from you can possibly be a set back for you and your household.

I love cash and I've been carrying cash for decades. The key is to bring little cash per day, like 20 bucks. That's why it's so easy to be disciplined with money when the only amount you can spend per day is $20. For groceries get ready to bring more money that day but that's it. Cards are better. The only downside of prepaid cards is the fees.
From personal experience just because the "crook" can't see into your bag doesn't mean they won't try to rob you.
At 20 years old, I was poor, I didn't look rich. I looked like a 20yr that lived paycheck to paychek, which I did, and I still got mugged at GUN point for my off brand phone, my groceries and all the cash in my bag. Gun to my neck for my poor people stuff. That mf took the rest of my cash grocery budget for the month. (grocery budget is the only cash I kept)
The boomer mentality around cash is so weird. You loose the cash, it's gone forever. You loose your card, you call your provider and cancel it and get your shit back.

Crooks are becoming more intelligent and identity theft is one of the biggest crimes happening now because the plurality of society uses cards instead of cash. Chances are you’ll be safer carrying the cash, just be cognizant of your surroundings, use common sense and only take the cash you need with you into the establishments you’ll be spending that particular cash in. Only take grocery money inside the grocery store, only take oil change money inside the oil change place, and the amount of gas money inside the gas station that you’ll need ect.
