Trumpeter Bill Hardman called Art Blakey.."my old man". Blakey always played with great feeling and always set the pace, leading and pushing every bunch of guys he played with.
Herbie is a genius and wonderful ambassador and orator. Bobby Watson is up there with the very best alto players and was leading the band at that time if I am not wrong,Pity Art died before Javon Jackson cold really stamp his identity. Peter Washington is like a metronome on bass
The album was called Taking Off and I do like how the arranger used parts of the original solo. The two versions are different. There is something a big band can do and a small group can't and viceversa.
Anybody else noticed that Art Blakey forgot the silence before the bridge?, thats why that saxo player looked at him. Anyway if you are gonna miss it in a gig this is quite a way to LOL. Herbie Rules!!
Herbie Hancock with the late, great Art Blakey!!! It does not get better than this. Thank you.
This tune was on Herbie Hancock's debut album. It's awesome with the small group and AMAZING with the big band here. This is 5 Stars all the way!!!
Great Herbie great blaacky and the big band God bless
Did y'all dig the piano intro by Herbie? That's some serious business to go from Bartok type stuff, Ravel into a classic blues shuffle.
Replying 14 years later cause y'aint never lied
I always enjoyed this artist and his music, he adds a touch of jazz for every age bracket.
Hard bop big band. Great.
superb and brilliant
Two watches? What a boss...
haha I didn't notice 'til I read you! Probably Japan time on one hand, home time on the other

I tried to do the same in my arrangement: th-cam.com/video/-00m3eN3kYU/w-d-xo.html It's really fun to play!
「日野皓正」若すぎ。ピアノに「キレ」が有ってとっても素敵。
Sono d'accordo
What a intro 😨
Don't blame him, blame the 80's.

REALLY??? Who cares. It's Blakey, and the grove he keeps at his age is pure. He forgot to give a pause... dat's it!
dood it's the 80's haha
Uhhh: That was McCoy Tyner I believe....check your album
It just me or does the piano have a haunted ring to it?
its you
The occasional little pitch warbles? Just slightly warped tape. It affects the whole recording, definitely most noticable on the piano tho.
I prefer thelonius monk.
