Snow stopped our Japan bucket list trip, but here’s how Japan’s harshest winter led us to travel smarter to stay warm. In today’s Japan travel vlog we’re showing you the best way to spend your money in Japan with a sneak peak inside our very own private outdoor bath (rotenburo) in the famous onsen town, Beppu Onsen in Oita Prefecture and trying one of Japan’s most beloved umami-packed soul foods in Miyazaki Prefecture!

    📍Places we visited:
🍗 Nao-Chan / 元祖チキン南蛮 直ちゃん in Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture
Looking for what to eat in Miyazaki? “Chicken nanban” (fried chicken seasoned with a sweet and sour vinegary sauce) is a popular Japanese fusion foods that can be found in supermarkets and convenience stores in every corner of the country, but did you know that this humble Japanese soul food hails from a small city in Miyazaki? Although chicken nanban is typically served with tartar sauce on top, at Nao-Chan - which claims to be the restaurant which created the original nationwide favourite - you won’t find any tartar sauce on the menu because all of the delicious umami flavour comes from their secret vinegar sauce instead. The restaurant keeps things simple with only 3 items on the menu (all chicken, of course) and believe us when we say Nao-chan’s is the best fried chicken we’ve tried in Japan and is a must-eat dish if you visit Miyazaki!

    ♨️ Gotouen Onsen / 五湯苑(ごとうえん)and Yukemuri Observatory / 湯けむり展望台
    in Beppu, Oita Prefecture
Kyushu in west Japan is famous for its onsen (hot springs), with Beppu Onsen in Oita Prefecture being the most popular. Beppu is also famous globally for its colourful red and blue “hell onsens” and because it boasts the largest number of hot spring baths in the entire world! There are endless hot spring resorts and one-day private onsen to choose from, and you can even try boiling your own food in hot spring water (known as “地獄蒸し”, or “jigoku mushi”, literally “hell steamed”). During a trip to Beppu, we recommend seeing the hot steam rising from the ground at the Yukemuri Observatory, and taking an outdoor bath (“露天風呂”, “rotenburo”) like we did at the rustically simple hidden treasure, Gotouen Onsen.

Chicken and Onsen, it cannot get much better. Also this is giving me major spirited away vibes with all the steam coming out of the town like it did with the factory.

One may watch Kiwi & Bear rave about this chicken for 6:48, or just click there to see all one needs to know in 6 seconds. The combination of the cold mountain air and snow with the hot, volcanic, natural spring water looked so refreshing! I love the fast-forward drives and very high-quality, often hilarious subtitles on your videos - They're always such a joy to watch.

    記憶違いだったら申し訳ないのですが、延岡だったら、”天領うどん” と言うのも名物でなかったでしょうかね?
    釜揚げ(湯貯め)うどんの一種なのですが、そのような”うどん”があったような気がするのですが・・・。

Love your vlog so much! But I think 南蛮
means "southern barbarian" which is an old / alternative version to 外国人, the Portugese brought fried food to Japan, so it probably comes from them long ago.
