Before I sold my towing business, I would pull trees, roots and all with my rotator semi tow truck. Makes quick and easy work on bushes, shrubs and trees. Kind of an expensive tool to use, but I already owned the fleet of trucks.

I’ve pulled thousands of stumps, some are mean, some were the size of the excavator, some you had to piece out, the best method by far is to leave about 10-12’ of log attached, or the entire tree if possible, it self tips once a few roots are detached…we also use a frost hook that’s set up to fit multiple machines, it speeds up the process dramatically and reduces backfilling…..and be kind to your machine!

To pull a stump you need to get the ground somewhat ready to let the stump go . You need to backhoe around the edges of the trunk to cut and/or uncover part of the roots so they can bend and snap off when you put pressure on the trunk that is left of the tree . If you can , then water what you have uncovered and let that soak in for a couple of hours . Then the stump will come out a lot easier . Work smarter not harder .

NEVER place a shovel or anything else into the ground without first contacting your local one call diggers hotline. You see those grey and green metal cabinets behind you? That's your electric and telecommunications distribution point. I see a secondary transformer, primary transformer, either a primary junction box or a 3 phase transformer, cable tv junction box/fiber cabinet, telephone ped/fiber cabinet. If it's a small tree like that one... don't cut it down.
Use tow straps up high on the tree, pull with a truck to loosen roots from the soil, and pull side to side. Once you loosen it,
You can do the rest by hand.
The larger roots will reveal themselves when you pull and cut them with a Sawzall.

We have "hackberry" which are amazingly fast growing and strong wood and they put down a tap root to just about match the tree trunk above ground. I gave up digging out the root at 6 ft below original grade and still had to chansaw it off after pressure washing and cutting the tangle of roots. Tractor still wouldn't pull it after that much digging and I had left 5 ft above ground to give leverage.

Then I cut them off at the base of the stump and pull them out of the ground using come a longs or my truck. Once the roots are pulled out, the stump is easy.
