Tracking Bitcoin Transactions on the Blockchain - SANS DFIR Summit 2017

- Bitcoins are a commonly-used currency among cyber criminals for exchanging goods and services and receiving payments from ransomware. While cryptocurrency claims to promote anonymity, the nature of the blockchain’s public ledger means that criminal activities can be traced and correlated. This presentation will cover a brief high-level overview of how transactions on the blockchain work and will focus on how to apply this knowledge in order to both manually and automatically map out transactions, associate bitcoin addresses, and identify potential cybercriminal-owned bitcoin wallets with the goal of providing context to the scale and duration of a campaign impacting your enterprise. Examples will include identifying a Locky affiliate’s infrastructure, attributing the Shark/Atom ransomware, and identifying “bitcoin exchanges” on the blockchain.

one thing is mistaken here. one recipient can have a ton of hexadecimal addresses on ONE place, not to mention how many there can be on MULTIPLE places. you'll need to invent a new Turing machine for this new kind of Enigma Problem.

Do local police departments have the competency to do this? That is given a wallet address used by scammers, be able to trace the public transactions as shown in this video, to find a point in the chain (like an exchange) where they can use things like a subpoena to tie the address with an individual? Or is it only security researchers who are bothering to do this analysis.

Hello, I can't believe this video was posted 5 years ago and I'm just finding it out today, thank you very much for your great work and analysis. I was following a transaction and realized it stopped in a box, i.e, instead of it to show a circle for me to double click again, in stopped in a box and the description shows unspent output, but no wallet address, how do I know which address that box is related to ?

You raise a good point and one that came up a lot at the time regarding "should you pay?" Nobody asked me after the talk (I thought someone might), but this is a good spot to address it. Here's my personal take (and I emphasize, this is my personal take and not that of any of my employers).
Firs, a few caveats. I never *quite* say in this talk whether you should or shouldn't pay, just that if you need your files back in that particular instance and you don't have functional backups, you don't have many other realistic options. I should also say that these types of campaigns aren't charging 1.5 BTC in these days- they're charging around $1,000 (give or take). Last caveat: A month after this talk, BTC-e was taken down by law enforcement.
With all of that in mind I'd point out that no matter what the asking price is, if your business or a large part of it is shut down for five days while you try to find a way not to pay, you're likely losing far more in revenue than the $1,000 or even $20,000. Some companies I've worked with were willing to accept that. Others weren't.
Thus, whether you *should* pay isn't for me to say (at least not publicly)- it's up to the company to decide if that's what is best for the stakeholders, and the answer is different for a hospital, a school, a government agency, or a publicly traded organization. Some need to resume operations, whereas others need to and/or can afford to take a more principled stand.

After I received my first call from the case coordinator, and throughout the whole process the *Cryptotraceback* staff was pleasant and informative, and I felt they were on top of the situation. Once I received an offer from the bank, my agent considered it fair, and he advised me to take it, though it was my decision. I did take it and I got €22,000 which is more than half of my initial losses!!
