Siri's attitude with you was HILARIOUS. I look forward to these videos all year long and I was not disappointed! Definitely avoiding all of these. Narnia was/is SUCH a popular series in my area (midwest US so conservative area, unfortunately, we are working on that) and I think I read at least a couple of them but I don't remember any of them other than the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe which I remember liking but even as a kid, thinking it was a little preachy. Haven't read any of the others on this list, thankfully! I almost read The Silent Patient but luckily saw your vlog first and was like "Nope, not doing that!". lol
It’s because the church believes fantasy and magic are the work of the devil, or that they will make children believe in something else other than god and turn them away from Christianity. Either way many Christian households ban either certain fantasy works (Harry Potter is a big target) or magic all together. Some go as far as telling their kids Santa isn’t real and also the work of the devil. No I’m not joking about any of this! 😫🫠
I haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia since I was a small child, but I distinctly remember Magician's Nephew being by far my favorite, and The Last Battle being one that I despised. The Last Battle is one of my least favorite books I've ever read.
"I didn't understand that can you say it again?" "No F*** off!" "I wont respond to that" HAAAAAAAAAhahahaha. Great vid as always Gavin! xooxo. (PS Thanks for the Legally Blonde Heads-Up. I didn't know it was a book but now definitely wont pick it up. Don't want to ruin my love of the films).
Most of these have gotten really bad reviews but one or two is on some of my favorite youtubers favorites lists. So fun to see how different tastes are!
Gavin, thank you for your thoughts on Narnia! I named my kiddo after C.S. Lewis...I studied him in college...visited his home in Oxford...but I respect your perspective and am so glad to have you here on Booktube! 😊I love your channel and your vlogs are inspirational!!!
Hehe, yes The appeal is one of my best of the year :D The worst is probably Green lights by Matthew McConoughey, The circle, The honeymoon, The lamplighters, The sanatorium, Outlander 7 (first part), The Andromeda evolution, The passage. These are the ones I finished because there was always a storyline or situation that kept me on my toes but the whole story was very boring and nothing actually happened.
In college we learn that horror stories are often exploiting societal fears or insecurities, so I can’t help but think about what real world fear horror stories are referencing when reading. This book was so weird to me because it seemed to be playing off the fear that your husband would replace you with your daughter, and that was just weird to me.
Yes Buck's Fizz ☺️ serve up!!! Need to get some for the holidays... I kinda love worst lists... Usually people give really helpful input on the books sometimes more than in best lists.
I think Nine Lives was scrubbed from my mind to because I remember you talking about it and agreeing with what you said, but I can’t for the life of me remember all the spoilery details. Especially the twist. 😂
I love the Narnia series, it has a very special place in my heart, and honestly I’ve never minded how Christian it is, even though I’ve been an atheist my whole life. I can absolutely see why some people don’t like it though.
I'm a staunch anti-christian, & I still love Narnia. I have like three copies of the books, in two different languages. You can enjoy something & also point out the parts that are icky. Especially since there are far more egregious christian propaganda books out there, & something being an allegory doesn't make it propaganda. If that were the case, then sue me for putting disability propaganda in all of my works
I read the chronicles of Narnia (only book 1) for the first time this year and I hated it. I really don’t understand all the love. It has to be nostalgia clouding people’s judgment
i completely agree with what you said about narnia! the series holds a special place in my heart due to nostalgia (and my love of the movies), but rereading them as an adult was so disappointing. it’s a shame because the world has so much potential, but so many of the books fell flat.
John Updike fan here. Never read "Witches of Eastwick: so can't really defend the book. But I hope you'd be willing to give him another go. "In the Beauty of the Lilies" is criminally underrated, highly recommend it.
My least favorite of the year was Inheritance by Christoper Paolini. The way he ended that series and how Eragon defeated the villain made me soooooooo upset. So upset to the point I will start ranting whenever that book is brought up. It felt like Christopher Paolini said, “Crap…..how am I going get them out of this one? Feelings???” Grrrrrr
See I LOVED the appeal- but it’s because I Love cosy mysteries especially told through a unique format. The whole idea is that you are sifting through the emails of these people with intern lawyers who are given the task by the head defence lawyer who is defending the person who confessed to the murder but he believes to be innocent. The idea is you solve the mystery with them. It was the perfect formula for me to enjoy it because I am a law student, and mysteries especially cosy mysteries are my favourite books to read. I completely respect your opinion but yeah just thought I’d share- in case someone reading this is similar to me and thinks they might like it
For some reason Ruth Ware just really works for me and I enjoyed One by One, but I think she could publish her grocery list and I'd want to know what she was going to buy next. 😅
Here's my worst books of 2022 Rhythm of war by Brandon Sanderson Toll the hounds Reaper's gale Husband material by alexis hall The regulators by Stephen king From a Buick 8 by Stephen king Cell by Stephen king The bone orchard The war of two queens by Jennifer l armentrout
I’m so glad that someone else out there hated The Silent Patient, I felt very alone cause it’s on so many peoples best of ALL TIME list 😮 absolutely wild.
I'd recommend skipping 10 Count as well if you don't like yaoi that's extremely problematic. The first book or so is ok but once it gets going it's just malpractice (it's about a psychologist and his patient) and dub-con/non-con all the way down
I adore The Witches of Eastwick movie and rage read the book a few years ago just because I wanted to know how different it was from the movie. I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever read another book by Updike because that one was just the worst! I also read the Chronicles of Narnia a looooong time ago and disliked all the religious overtone because it was so heavy-handed and I’m super not religious. I did like The Magician’s Nephew a lot though I’m not sure if I’d feel the same reading it now.
The Silent Patient??!!! Ouch! But I knew it was coming. 😭😄 The Maidens I totally get! I DNF'D it so you did better than I did. 😁 Can't wait to see what 2023 holds!
Even in a video where Gavin is not "having a lot of hot takes" we still got "copy-right-free dialogue", "daddy Aslan" and a little insight in the slightly dysfunctional relationship Gavin has with his Siri... This is why we love you Gavin!
I haven’t read nor watched anything Fifty Shades related, but according to Dominic Noble, who read the *whole* series (the original trilogy anyway, not the Christian POV books), plus The Mister, and watched all the films, the movies really tried to elevate the source material while trying to stay faithful to them. The first film particularly did its best, hiring a director known most for artsy films (to the point where EL James hated it, even though it was still mostly faithful).
My husband started reading The Chronicles of Narnia aloud to our kids this year, got to A Horse and His Boy and noped right outta there. So racist 🤦🏼♀️
Nine Lives was the first time where I said that a book shouldn’t have even been published. Most of the time I can understand a book just not being for me, but that was a total rip off of Christie. With hardly anything changed.
I finished the appeal and it was NOT worth finishing. I don't make worst book videos anymore but if I did that would be on it. Fifty shades of grey is not worth it at all. Another one I wish I hadn't read as well... The films are hilarious, I agree 😝 YES hated the chronicles of narnias altogether. The last book is the worst.
Thank you! I hate Alex Michaelides's books (I'm a mental health professional and the MH rep in the Silent Patient is gross) and it feels like everyone else loves him
The Silent Patient made me angry, and then today I found out the author used to be a therapist! Now I'm really mad. It presents a terrible view of mental illness and the people involved with treating it.
It’s funny to me that Narnia feels like strong religious propaganda to some people, yes it’s obviously Christian allegory, but maybe because I was forced to read *ACTUAL* religious propaganda as a child, it seems tame to me!! Lol TCON and LOTR were the only fantasy I was allowed to read as a child, because of the Christian allegory, so I read them when I was around 8-12 and enjoyed them. Now if you want to hear some horror stories, I can tell you about reading how women are supposed to be the moral guiding light for their husbands, and that their husband’s sins were a direct result of the wife not doing a good enough job of setting a good Christian example.
The Narnia books are in a very weird spectrum. They can go from "pretty good all things considered" to "absolutely terrible", and everything in between in regards to quality. The Horse and His Boy was the worst in my opinion, with The Last Battle in close second.
The Ring trilogy were my worst. They totally grossed me out. I DNF'd the third book because it grossed me out so bad not far into the book. I'll just stick to the movies.
I hate when the reveal in a book is that the narrator was unreliable all along and they were the ones who really committed some act attributed to someone else. I’m fine if all along things are twisty and murky and you’re questioning the reliability of the narrator, then the reveals are interesting and in line with the rest of the book. But I hate when things seem straightforward, and you’re trying to put things together along with the narrator, and then all of sudden the book shifts and reveals what you thought you knew was a lie, because then the twists feel unearned.

I didn't enjoy One by One by Ruth Ware either. I guessed who the killer was the first chapter and all the characters were just self centered and annoying.
Hahaha so I haven't read the silent patient but the excerpt from the cover makes me cringe at how cheesy and dramatic it is. P.s. im reading a super cringy romantic thriller right now called shiver by karen Robards if you just want to laugh at a badly written book lol 😆 😂 🤣
Did you read The Magician’s Nephew? It was my favorite of all the Narnia books growing up. That being said, its been close to two decades since I read it last and I have no idea if it holds up in the slightest. 🫣
That was the nicest way ever to basically say “authors you’re not welcome here” 😂
Omg the Siri moment was so funny😂😂 and thank you for reading all these so we wont have to.

That had me laughing so hard. They sound like a toxic couple🤣
Most of these have gotten really bad reviews but one or two is on some of my favorite youtubers favorites lists. So fun to see how different tastes are!
I just love you you always make me laugh and smile.
Love the new intro. Great video. 💚👽
Gavin, thank you for your thoughts on Narnia! I named my kiddo after C.S. Lewis...I studied him in college...visited his home in Oxford...but I respect your perspective and am so glad to have you here on Booktube! 😊I love your channel and your vlogs are inspirational!!!
GAVIN. This intro?! So much fun! 😍👏🏻

Oh no Lamplighters is on my TBR, is it boring or dodgy?
@@stegobookosaurusrawr4153 super boring, nothing happenes, annoying characters, you think something will happen, but won't.
I also hated The Maidens! I’m glad someone else did because I thought I was crazy given how much people loved it! 🤷🏼♀️
In college we learn that horror stories are often exploiting societal fears or insecurities, so I can’t help but think about what real world fear horror stories are referencing when reading. I would watch HOURS of you roasting The Maidens, it makes me so happy 🥰
“How to Train Your Gavin to Get Pissed Off” 😂😂😂
I wouldn’t even care if I’d loved all of these books, I just love how you talk about them
‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. 2 iconic female characters in the workplace with great movie adaptations.
I am LIVING for the rant on One By One and Nine Lives because same 😅
I am LOVINGGG this new intro
Finally someone who didn't like the Chronicles of Narnia and saw through the religious propaganda of it, I am not alone lol.
C.S. Lewis is a Christian author. It is in his work, just as Phillip Pullman is an atheist and his views are in his books.
@@emilyreads5207 same goes for Tolkien, but his work is less bible fanfic-y

Wow lol I enjoyed this video so much. I appreciate your summary of these books
I dunno if I already said but love the new intro!
I reread Narnia last year and felt 100% the same!
I am one of the few people who liked One By One. It wasn't a 5 star, but I still had a good time for it.
Same I gave it 4 stars💀
i completely agree with what you said about narnia!
the series holds a special place in my heart due to nostalgia (and my love of the movies), but rereading them as an adult was so disappointing. it’s a shame because the world has so much potential, but so many of the books fell flat.

Love the intro! And your attitude with Siri. I liked the Silent Patient….sorry 😬
Literally the only thing I liked about the silent patient was the description of the painting. Sounded like a bomb painting.

50 Shades is pretty universally hated and mocked. Not liking it is perfectly fine.
INCREDIBLE INTRO ✨

You dodged a bullet with Hide. It got SO MUCH WORSE lol
LMAO I agree the fifty shades of grey movies are a guilty pleasure and I also saw all of them in theaters 😂 but the books are trash omg what the heck
oh my god i COMPLETELY agree about the maidens. i hated that book.....
I had a feeling Chronicles of Nanria would show up.

I hated the maidens the main character was so dumb. Why was she even trying to solve it? It’s so bad I rolled my eyes the whole time
I agree Lion the Witch and the Wardobe really wasnt that good. I havent read the others and happy to skip them 😅
We live in a world where ‘50 Shades of Grey’ is more difficult to deal than with a Low-rate Hotel.

I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan. It is such a beautiful country. Unfortunately, I can't join you because I have school. :(
A bit of the bubbly, a great Intro and talking about books you didn’t like. You have my attention.
Siri won’t respond to that was hilarious 😂
hee hee i liked one by one. i read the entire thing in one day because I was so gripped.
Alexa told you off. Lol.
Thank you! I hate Alex Michaelides's books (I'm a mental health professional and the MH rep in the Silent Patient is gross) and it feels like everyone else loves him
The Maidens is my worst of the year.
Omg fifty shades of grey,! first book to me felt like it had hardly any plot and if I had to read one more page of Anastasia being "wet and ready"

The Maidens was in my 10 worst of 2021! It was sooooooo bad. ☠️
Speaking of Negative Nancy, we should do a Nancy Drew Collab. You can be the Bess to my Nancy.
The whole The Silent Patient book is a big plot hole! The format of revealing everything through a diary (and how the hell did she find the time and calmness to sit down and write in her diary about the shit storm she'd just been through?) doesn't make sense in this case.
Will come back to this vid once I've read The Appeal as I'm so intrigued to see it in this thumbnail!! 😂😂😂
Update: sorry Gav I bloody loved it! 😂😂 I read it cover to cover in one night because I am that nosy bitch 👀
You just reminded me that I reread the Narnia chronicles in January this year and it put my mind on an instant track of how mad the reread actually made me. The blatant religious references in it drove me insane. Just stank of religious indoctrination to me. But then, I was force fed traditional Catholicism growing up, so there’s that. Haha. Not a series I’ll be encouraging my nieces and nephews to read, for sure.
The chronicles of Narnia was written by C.S. Lewis. He is a Christian who has written so many books. It was written for Christian children.
I didn’t even know legally blonde was a book… I only thought it was a movie… ooops
The Maidens and The Single Patient have some of the same characters. They are complex mysteries. J The audio of The Silent Patient was very good.
Chronicles of Narnia always felt like another force feed people religion beside Golden Compass and I couldn't not see the homophobia, racism, and sexism. Like the treatment of the girls in Narnia is on par with the souls in HDM. You can't say it's gay rep anymore than Narnia is strong empowered women rep. Both always get so much praise but I can't ignore they don't do what they say they are well enough.
I didn't enjoy One by One by Ruth Ware either. I guessed who the killer was the first chapter and all the characters were just self centered and annoying.
I hated but read Plain Bad Heroines. To me it was real bad.
lol I'm an author (independent one). I've never seen any TH-camr talk about any of my books so I think I'm safe.
I read Jaws this year and didn't like it. The movie is way better. Skip the book entirely
Yeah, the ending of the Silent Patient was horrible. It made the rest NOT make sense to me.
I was about to buy the book🗿 I think I need to reconsider it
Unpopular opinion, but my worst read of the year was The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires.
To be fair, I didn’t like that one all that much either
Hahaha so I haven't read the silent patient but the excerpt from the cover makes me cringe at how cheesy and dramatic it is. P.s. im reading a super cringy romantic thriller right now called shiver by karen Robards if you just want to laugh at a badly written book lol 😆 😂 🤣
I feel like I'm the only person that like One By One 😅
I hate books where stories are written through emails, texts or letters. So boring.
Just want to remind everyone that obviously Hollywood doesn't agree with you ...
I agree that Hide was one of the worst books of 2022
Gavin, your Gen Z is showing with all this slander towards E-Mails lmao
Did you read The Magician’s Nephew? It was my favorite of all the Narnia books growing up. That being said, its been close to two decades since I read it last and I have no idea if it holds up in the slightest. 🫣
I’m ready for the tea to be spilled. ☕️🤌🏻
