“Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.” Ephesians 5:15-17
The word “opportunity” means “toward the port” and suggests a ship taking advantage of the wind and tide to arrive safely in the harbor. The shortness of life is a strong argument for making the best use of the opportunities God gives us. The world wants us to waste our time in selfish pursuits, but God wants us to serve. Yet, how many Christians plan their days so that they use their opportunities wisely?
We are reminded that even the hours of the day are not ours but they are entrusted to us for wise stewardship. We should live by God’s time. Let us therefore be careful with our time, endeavoring to serve the Lord well. May we also seek to make the most of every opportunity to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. In light of His past victory, in light of our future hope, may our present be spent for the glory of God!
