In this episode, Neel Parmar engages with the story behind the events that made the most important international news headlines. Today he probes the following-
Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, endorsing Mauritius' claim on the Chagos Islands. Because of which, this region becomes important not only for Mauritius, but also for Mauritius-Maldives relations, as well as for India. Actually, the 'Chagos Archipelago' with more than 60 islands and 7 atolls, is to the south of India and Maldives. 'Chagos' located in the Indian Ocean is about 500 kilometres from Maldives. On the other hand, it is at a distance of about 2155 km to the north-east of Mauritius, which also claims the region. In this regard, the support of Mauritius' claim on Chagos by Maldives is very important for the relationship between the two countries. Originally Mauritius was a French colony, under which the Chagos Islands were administered under the 'Mauritius-French Administration'. But by the Treaty of Paris of 1814, France ceded control of Mauritius and associated territories to Britain. In this regard, in 1965, under the 'Mauritius Independence Plan', the Chagos was separated from Mauritius and formed as 'BIOT' i.e. 'British Indian Ocean Territory'. Mauritius later gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968, and has since claimed the Chagos Archipelago as Mauritian territory.
