The albums Nick Raskulinecz does sound amazing. He strikes me as the kind of guy who just lives and breathes the record making process, and all those years of experience and love of rock and roll music have yielded a huge skillset and great ears.
I'm a VERY amateur sound guy, and Nick is definitely one of my Heroes. He started at the bottom and learned from so many of the greats in the 80's and 90's, working his way up. Hell, just to sit in a room with him quietly while he works would be amazing!!! And he always seems like just the coolest guy with so much passion.
This is the first I've ever commented on a TH-cam video. Just wanted to say how great this was. Would love to see some more rig rundowns in studio. Was awesome to see all the tools Nick uses to get such a variety of tones. Fantastic job!
I literally thought to myself, I wonder if he's from Iowa, because I thought sounded like the guys from Slipknot haha But i looked it up, he's from Tennessee.
No one has gone over gear with the band Jars Of Clay. They're on hiatus at their homes in Nashville. They have their own studio there so maybe a lot of their gear is there. I know a few fans would like to watch that video. Thanks for considering!
Great Rig Rundown. Great gear. That Steve Stevens Amp is probably the best, most versatile, amp I've ever played. I wonder if Nick knows where the "Magic Sound City Marshall" That Keith Olsen , Beau Hill and Everyone used at SS. Great Amp!
Great Rundown, huge fan of Nick's work. By the way, at 23:15 he is wrong; Kurt Cobain didn't use Boss CE-2, he used Electro-Harmonix Small Clone. Really different type of chorus.
I don't know how many people I've heard get that wrong - and people who should know better! lol - but yeah, Small Clone or Polychorus is the consensus. Consequently, as a child of the 80s/90s, I like a few choruses, but I always seem to come back to the Small Clone myself!
Yup yup. Small Clone is responsible for the very distinct chorus sounds of Nirvana. He also had a Poly Chorus that I think he used more as a flanger effect for some of the guitar solos.
Poly chorus was featured more heavily on the album In Utero, I think, most notably/audibly on the song Radio Friendly... with the modulating feedback squeals and noise.
I'm pretty sure Nick(a professional engineer for the studio Nirvana recorded in )has more info about Kurts various chorus pedals he used to record than you. He likely used different pedals live than in the studio or on certain recordings. Bunch of internet dweebs who reads heresay and rumours from other internet dweebs.
@@samuelguymer4358 Of course he knows more than me. It's just... I have both pedals and the Small Clone is "instant Nirvana" whilst the Boss Ce-2 merely gets you in the "Nirvana ballpark". Maybe Kurt used both pedals, maybe he didn't, that's not the point; I just don't want some 10 year old Nirvana fanboy to spend a lot of money on a ridiculously expensive vintage japanese Boss Ce-2 and never get the sound that he is after.
Hear that, I found a couple for sale about 2 years ago and they had a pretty penny to their name. It's to be expected I guess.... That's how fieldy from Korn aquired his buzz effect on some of their earlier records.
Nick, I live in Oak Ridge. I shop at Ciderville quite a bit. I would love to have the big Cigar Store Indian that resides between the store and the club. lol I am also a fan of Hypertribe.
@@papadelta9485 Well I can honestly say it's in my humble opinion that the chatter that comes out of couple of custom shops,...and an individual by the name Tom Murphy. That is good place to start. Just pure foolishness.😏
Lately, more and more studios I check out I notice that. Maybe they are falling out of "fashion". Fine with me though. Hopefully I will be able to find some boogies buried in the corners of stores, covered in dust, selling super cheap.
Nobody tells me to change my strings. Different amps, pedals no problem. Guitars are off-limits. He’s the kind of guy that wants to control people. Gotta set limits with producers sometimes, lot’s of armchair quarterbacks out there.
I’d go ahead and grow that goatee into a beard and cover up that I’m a lazy non physical working turkey waddle. A bit harsh, nah not in today’s climate.
I swear if he says "Fantastic" one more time... Damn Underwhelming. "Rig Rundown" Let's hear the GEAR please, not just someone saying the word "fantastic" multiple times.
Black Gives Way To Blue was absolutely bone crushingly heavy, the mans a genius
Love the studio rig rundown idea. Love to see Steve Albini rig rundown.
Steve Albini just came out with a vid from EQD's channel
MrMystery666 थं
This guy, Nick, is cool. Knowledgeable and easy to listen to. Nice to hear from the other side of the desk too. Great rig rundown.
Am I only one who thought that D'addario plug was an ad, and NOT part of the video?
Nope, got me too

I guess I'm kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Abdiel Stephen Flixportal :D
I think Nick might be Jim Root's voice twin.
"Ya know"
I literally thought to myself, I wonder if he's from Iowa, because I thought sounded like the guys from Slipknot haha
But i looked it up, he's from Tennessee.
Hell yes!!!! Crazy
He actually produced some Stone Sour records. I bet there were a lot of moments in the studio where it sounded like Jim Root was talking to himself.
@@boglot Haha, that's funny! Would have loved to hear those conversations😂
Absolutely love Nick's work! Great video
17 year old me relates so hard to Raskulinecz subconsciously air-guitaring when he searches for words. Chubby guitar weirdos gotta stick together.
Also good job to Ted Drozdowski for asking about the mixing boards. That was a really interesting detail.
Or ... um diet
This is one of my favorite run downs. Nice work, and I'd hire Nick in a second!!
I don't think I've ever heard someone say "Kurt from Nirvana" before instead of just Kurt Cobain haha
He gave a shoutout to Ciderville Music!! Awesome! As a Knoxville native, I’ve been there hundreds of times.
Good old Knoxville. Bearden High School grad here.
Sound city as nick mentioned...that studio was BAD ASS, it has the definitive rock sound!
No one has gone over gear with the band Jars Of Clay. They're on hiatus at their homes in Nashville. They have their own studio there so maybe a lot of their gear is there. I know a few fans would like to watch that video. Thanks for considering!
Probably one of the best Rig Rundowns
Holy fuck! I've just realised that this is the guy from Sound City documentary, isn't he?
Everyone needs to watch Dave Grohl's /Sound City/ documentary. Awesome.
Love this dude - it was so cool to see him back in the Sound City Documentary from Dave Grohl.
Great Rig Rundown. Great gear. That Steve Stevens Amp is probably the best, most versatile, amp I've ever played. I wonder if Nick knows where the "Magic Sound City Marshall" That Keith Olsen , Beau Hill and Everyone used at SS. Great Amp!
If you close your eyes, he sounds like Jim Root
OMG...I wrote this...then saw your comment. LOL.

This is a hell of an amp collection.
him: this is probably my favorite mic
me: *hmm, probably something worth checking out!*
*mics are $4,000*
Close your eyes...sounds like Jim Root. Great gear!!!
I know! Exactly what I thought. I started the video without watching it and was like "is that Jim Root"?
It’s got a lot of headroom it distorts really easy
I've got great admiration for the man's work. But "It's got a lot of headroom and it distorts at a nice low volume" sound pretty contradictory to me.
I love that "All my life" bit hehe
Great video. Time to go shopping for a FZ-2 :)
Guitar Express Good luck finding one. The Behringer Super Fuzz is a really good clone.
Thanks! Just got one through Reverb@@Steaminlidz

Great stuff, one of the better videos, very informative too
love it when ted does these. great rundown!
GREAT VIDEO EVER! bring more studios!!!!!
I love this guy! Hey Nick, let's make a record!
Mate, Nick is the Dude... great vid...
Cool collection of gear, definitely looks like a studio I'd like to record in!
Nick seems like a really cool guy!
That lizzy hale explorer may be ny favorite explorer ever now
We love producers rig rundown \o/
GREAT GREAT GREAT!
THANKS THANKS THANKS for sharing!
I luv this guy!
Well, he does have an Alex Lifeson "Lerxst" amp.
A Canadian company? How about Mojotone...a hometown North Carolina company!
That's exactly why studios cost a lot. Because of the know how and the gear. It's no different than tools in a mechanics tool chest. Nice collection.
great chat - I'm just gettin' hip to this producer - I'd like to hire him for my band :) …. The guitars are @ 23:21
Nick, I live in Oak Ridge. I shop at Ciderville quite a bit. I would love to have the big Cigar Store Indian that resides between the store and the club. lol I am also a fan of Hypertribe.
Awesome rig rundown. A guitarist Disneyland. 4real mon.
Nick, Make me some guacamole! Sound City Forever!
Thank you.
Who the f@ck wouldnt want to work with this guy?!
Nick is the air guitar king!
This guy is from the Knoxville, TN area! Which I grew up just north of
Nick you Rock! Send me the Lerxst head lol. One of my favorite producers next to Mutt, Micael Barbiero and Allen Parsons
awesome!!!!
Wow amazing studio!
Nice no trademark logo TS-808 Nick, those can be the better ones from the period. Great video!
Did anyone else notice he said Tommy Ionni
Ok. If your producer/engineer tells you the black flying V doesn't sound as good as the white flying V based on the color,........????🤨
He’s fooling himself. It was probably the pickups. Ugh.
@@75YBA 🤣🤣🤣 Snale oil salesman.🤣🤣🤣
ive heard billy corgan say this same thing. why they think its the paint idk

3:42 What the model of this Orange?
Not one Strat ???????????????????
Look at the projects he works on... not really a place where a strat fits...
@@gentlewolf1279 he has a tele..
2 last names I can’t say or spell😂
Mojo Tone makes the Lifeson head
man i wanted to see the firebird
play the stuff please!!
The SG JR wins. That is all.
"it's like a Gibson theme. There's all these Les Paul's over here."
*points at the Les Paul (v2)*
"there's a sweet sg"
Not a single Strat style guitar?! As much as I love a nice Les Paul, where’s the variety at?
With how heavy the guitars are tracked in this room, there'll be 60 cycle hum if there's a strat anywhere near the building! 😂
Very hip!
Looks like he likes his BIG Mac's.......
Guy doesn't include Rush and The Foo Fighters in the bands Nick has produced?????
Corpsegrinders brother
Nick, can I work for you? Will you train me? I live 6 hours north. Will move down.
Gotta do up that zipper bro!
Basses?
Hiwatt didn't change owners till the 80s not the 70s. Get a real hylight era Hiwatt and have your mind blown.
i have all those amps in a $140 VOX vtx20....just saying
Jesus Christ he listed the bands nicks worked with and didn’t include Rush hahahahahahahahhaa
or deftones jajaja
HEY!! i have 10 SM57s!!!
No Fender amps? I'm surprised.
no strats????
there wernt any basses, youre not fooling me! there was just one p bass with barely any paint covered in mud 😂😂
This rundown has some amazing gear but this guy does shit all backwards. Guitar's always come first.
No sir. That Gibby baritone is NOT a standard. That's a studio special. $899.00 guitar. Just saying
Hypertribe
To bad we couldn't of heard a few tones
es una lástima que no prueben ningún equipo....que desperdicio!!!
no mesa boogies?!?

The evertune may work but man its ugly AF!
My thought also. Would be great to record with though.

Pronounced RaskulineTCH please
I see a "rig rundown" video description I except to hear at least one guitar & amp combination being played...what a waste of our time!
Noooo! Why did you use this guy again to interview people!? Just sooo odd...
He does a great job man, I don't know why you would ever complain..
I swear if he says "Fantastic" one more time...

"Rig Rundown" Let's hear the GEAR please, not just someone saying the word "fantastic" multiple times.
Nick & his gear fantastic! But the “ interviewer” was awful! Just embarrassing 🙄
