Just thank you for this short though super educative format. Straight to the point, pro and passionate. Exactly what I could previously experience with the Sweewater team.
Thank you very much! A very good explanation to understand the very basics and I finally understood it! I read through lots of articles on the internet all skipping the basics and I just didn't understand them until now. Thank you so much!
Here's something interesting that's worth noting: A mechanical music box is also a form of music sequencer, if you think about it. When you understand how a music box works, it's easy to see how it is incredibly similar to how a MIDI sequencer works. Like MIDI (and even sheet music, for that matter), a music box does not record the actual sound waves produced in music, rather they only record the "data" behind the music. So when you play it back, the type of sound waves you hear is determined entirely by the characteristics of the sound-generating part of the music box (I.E the actual "instrument"). So you could have the same sequence being played on different music boxes, but the sound could be completely different; one music box would just sound like bells or chimes (you know, like what a typical music box sounds like), but then another music box that plays the same sequence could sound like a set of drums! So the musical data is the same, but the sound is an entirely different instrument. This kind of drastic change in sound is impossible to achieve with audio: if you record the sound of a piano and then play it back, it's always gonna sound like that piano every time you play the recording (even if you do add equalization or distortion or whatever) because you literally recorded the actual sound waves coming from that piano. You can't just change that piano sound recording to make it sound like an entirely different instrument... it's impossible. But this is also an advantage, if you think about it, because it'll sound the same regardless of what you play the recording on. This can't be said about MIDI, because in the same way as with the music box, MIDI does not record any kind of audio waveform at all, so the same MIDI file will "sound" different when played through different synthesizers/instruments.
Thank you for this video. I took music classes before, but i've been seeing these deviced played by musicians online for ages and had no idea what they were and what they were actually doing.
Great explanation! Does a hardware sequencer like that still have a place in a modern DAW workflow, or would it be more useful for live performance or the DAW-less?
thanks for this video. I was thrown off when I bought my Korg modwave because I thought I had a sequencer to build songs but it's actually a sequencer to build the single keystroke. I keep wondering if there are workarounds to use it as a song sequencer
Great! Daniel, for the sequence you've made on Cobalt5S, can it further transpose the sequence by changing root note on keyboard? (playing one note or multiple notes replacing notes in sequence) This usually called ARP, but pattern is predefined. Does the Cobalt5S has it? Can you "put" the sequence "you made" into a ARP to transpose? I wish hardware seq/arp features would be as cool as ANA2 sequencer :)
I just want a midi recorder that will let me record all the midi channels in real time, for perhaps 2 or three external synths, and will hold enough memory for say 100 songs. It's 2022 but we get 512 notes? Help!
Hey. Question. I have a synthesizer and a sampler and a cheap drum machine. No computer. Can you tell me an affordable basic sequencer that will let me make music and that will ve an entry level sequencer That will teach me the basics of how to make music? I've heard you can spend $150 to buy a basic 1. Somebody mentioned a QD1 or something like that.. But can you give me a list of a few sequencers That would be decent one's?. I know nothing about midi, I just know you could connect things and they will work together. I'd like to try to make some electronic music with my 13 year old son. Thanks in advance 3:36
Oh. I have a Boss sp303, a Korg Microkorg. A Yamaha dx21. An Alesis Quadreverb, and a Korg Electribe drum machine. Oh, and I just ordered a Behringer Tb 303 clone..
@@dadjacobs8977 I don't have a Beatstep Pro, but would recommend that over the SQ-1. Costs more, but seems more playable. The SQ-1 can't control as many devices, has fewer steps and doesn't save sequences. You also have to dial in each note.
Daniel Fisher breaks down the pattern-building power of sequencers 🎹
I feel like Daniel Fisher is the Mr. Rogers of my synthesizer education, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Describing anyone as “the Mr. Rogers of ______” can only be used as a compliment.
I have been sequencing since Opcode released Vision decades ago, yet I still enjoyed Daniel explaining these basics. He is such a great teacher.
Same! Good ok Opcode! I only watched this because he had the MicroConposer sitting there! Loved that thing!
Perfectly explained, you guys are the best

I love the series of synth basics and digital audio. Perfect for beginners like me :)

Sweetwater is the only company of any kind that I’m subscribed to. They just have really informative and entertaining vids.
Thanks, Daniel! Because of your demonstration, I finally understand what a step sequencer is.

You're taking it way back with that MC sequencer. I still have my MC-500 along with a Yamaha QX1. Old school for sure.
Thanks for this!
Great Video ! Short n Sweet

I really like all these synth education videos. They are very educational and helpful. Just wish I had more Moog money! And room. And time...

I LOVE the background music. If someone happens to know where to find it, I'd appreciate the info
I remember those Roland MC-500, they were very good and reliable but a little bit slow loading from the disk.
Keep em comin’

I am looking for the answer can and/or how can a sequencer help me better than the sequencer of ableton?
Hello sir,
Can you guide...
Which is best midi keyboard for cubase 12....
61 key controller....
🙏🙏🙏
So looping machnine like boss rc 300 basically is a sequencer too right?
Hi dony1618. A MIDI sequencer records note and controller data. A looper records audio. -_Daniel_
What’s on each side of those mother32 racked setup behind him?
Hi rwesreal. Those are AIRA effects from Roland. Demora, Torcido, Scooper, and Bitrazer. -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater oh gotcha ok. Thanks!

steprecording im stuck..
so a loop station is basicaly also a sequencer?
Hi charlyroussel. A looper typically loops audio, while a sequencer typically loops MIDI. -_Daniel_
Right:) of course that’s it. Thanks
So it’s basically a looper but with the ability to alter it and create a variation
Hi Ramen Curry. They're slightly similar, but a Looper records audio, and a Sequencer records MIDI information. -_Daniel_
OK so much for the old ones how about the new ones that we can buy that at a reasonable price Mr. Sweetwater

I think you're referring to the Korg SQ-1?? Very easy to use and lots of TH-cam videos.
@Fujinski-rv4gk someone else told me to buy the Autrusia Beat pro instead. What is your opinion?
