    You are on an impressive journey. McMaster Carr sells cryogenic pop-off valves in incremental ranges from 5 to 400 psi for your LOX tank. Your hydrostatically tested modified beer kegs are strong enough to hold liquified Butane. Butane is a good deal more energy dense than alcohol. Mixtures of Butane and Propane will give you enough pressure to pump itself if you wrap the feed lined around the outside of the engine. LPG is easier to ignite and simpler to feed into a rocket motor than alcohol.
    Good Luck & have fum.

    Thanks Ryan. I wish you every success with this rocket.
    It looks as though you might have most of the mass at the bottom of the rocket. If that's the case (and I hope that it isn't), then you will need to make changes: The centre of mass needs to be in front of the centre of aerodynamic pressure/lift at all times, otherwise the rocket will try to turn around, instead of going along the desired trajectory. Think about arrows and darts: For stability, the main mass is at the leading end of the projectile, and the fins are as far back as possible.

    • @KegRocket
      @KegRocket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is indeed quite a bit of weight in the back, there will need to be some ballast in the nose along with some big fins.

    As someone who has built and flown a rocket using the same fuels I recommend finding a way to get at least 1" of foam insulation around the keg or you'll have real issues getting it to fill up with LOX. Also mount your LOX vent and LOX pressure relief value up as far from the tank as possible.

  • @jonmcentire
    @jonmcentire ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought about doing this many times. I work at a place that goes through beer kegs constantly so I've had many an opportunity to look at their structure and their connectors and just a general way they operate. My immediate first thought upon examining one was "hey this would make a great pressurized fuel tank!"
    I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of this, I'm also glad that somebody is actually trying it!

    Fascinating project. First thougth on seeing 3 kegs, was two would be for ethanol and one for LOX to maximize volume mix-ratio for propellents. Seeing the 1:1 keg design, we now know you'll be running a LOX rich propellent cycle.
    Very curious to see how will pressurize kegs during flight, manage propellent flow (pumps, or pressure, etc). Even more excited to see how you design, constructed and tested a liquid rocket motor. More beer kegs for a test stand, or just stainless steel thermo bottles? It will also be exciting to see what instrumentation (sensors) and telemetry you will integrate and configure, to manage fuel flow, etc.
    This such a promising fundamentals of liquid rockets series, even if the project encounters some challenges on the way past max-Q to peak apogee.
