Exactly as you said Guy that area around Conwy is off the charts. Spent years driving past it as a kid on the way to other places and finally explored it a bit this year as part of an Emma Kingstons Bike Packing Wales route and just loved it. Ordered now your guide book and it’s definitely on my list for next year. Keep up the great work.
Excellent to hear your insights on this route, which looks spectacular. I'm proud that Wales can offer such high quality riding and hopefully it will be ridden responsibly as you rightly emphasise.
Hope that final section can be included. I just rode it in 2 days on a gravel bike. I want to go back and do 3 days on mtb, looks like I missed a great finish just riding the road into Conwy, although I was so tired I wouldn’t have had it in me for more techy trails! Great excuse to go back. Agreed Cross Foxes’s is a great stopping point too
Fantastic route. Just completed this. We did the route as a 3 day ride, as our party travelled from Shropshire & North Yorkshire to do the ride. Day 1 - Machynlleth to Penmaenpool - 37.75 Miles. We then rode to Dolgellau and stayed at Torrent Walk Bunkouse Day 2 - Penmaenpool to Plas Curig \ Capel Curig - 67.6 Miles. Dinner at Tin Y Coed - Stayed at Rocks at Plas Curig Day 3 - Plas Curig to Conwy - 29.5 Miles. Excellent route. The GPX worked really great. There was forrestry work around Coed Penmachno so we had to use some of the trails to work around and get back to the route. All in all highly recommended.
Cheers Peter, it’s the route that’s the really inspiring bit 👍🏻 I’ve done videos for King Alfred’s Way, West Kernow Way and Rebellion Way too. If you want some shorter historical routes to watch my other channel is Pedalling Past m.th-cam.com/video/fF-ZXWUiN6I/w-d-xo.html
Guide book ordered whilst watching! This will complement my King Alfred’s way & West Kernow way, several stretches of King Alfred’s completed and of to Cornwall this coming Sunday to do some of the Kernow way 😊
Think I will do this next year. Hopefully in the sun! I bike packed from Cardiff to Keswick on an On One Bootzipper drop bar bike I bought after watching your review of them. It was a great bike. I have a Nukeproof Scout now so should be good for this route with fast rolling tyres. Keep up the good work 👍👍
The folks at Cycling UK are still pushing hard to get those bits included and we're almost there. It was felt that actually showing them in the video (I rode them for recce purposes) or putting them on the launch GPX would encourage people to ride them at a time when that might screw things up in the final furlong. Hopefully the full intended route will be live soon 🤞🏻
@@GuyKesTV yeah, fully understand. It'll be absolutely fantastic if those cracking bits can be included. They are gems! Cheers 👍 ps, plenty of 'gems' on my YT channel 😉
Brilliant videos thank you . Really helpful to show the terrain . Can I ask two questions . 1 . I want to ride it on an e bike . It has no suspension. The tyres are fat but not mountain bike tyres . What do you think ? 2 . What happens if you have an accident . Sorry to be pessimistic . One can't get a signal on a mobile phone etc . What do you take with you for such eventualities? Thank you
Hi Carole, sorry for the delay in replying. You don't need suspension. Just be careful on the rockier descents with the extra weight of the E-bike. I use Strava to record rides and that has a beacon feature where you can send a live location link to a designated contact. There are other similar options too, but I'd always say buddy up with another rider for immediate help and increased safety if you can.
Brilliant video. Im new 2 gravel/bikepacking so apologies 4 dzft question. Do u reckon this is doable on a Specialized Diverge with future shock. My gut says probably not😑
Hi Guy, did this route over 2 days last month. Fantastic route till I got to the top of Conwy around 5 miles from end . Followed the official route, which the last part , not shown on your video, was up to my waist in water crossing the stream and then the next 200m was a bog. Surely they need to change this, any rain and some people could be in real trouble .My mate did this 2 weeks ago, put a video up of the stream, so ferocious youd drown but the finally went off tour to get accross. Who do I contact to challenge this as it's ridiculous if u do this when conditions turn. Thanks.
Cycling UK are very aware of this issue and doing everything they can to speed up a fix and get the bridlepath moved onto the footpath alignment. I’ll try and find out the best official route to go with raising the issue yourself though as the more people push the better. Glad you enjoyed the rest of the route though.
Hi Guy / Gary, Me and a mate did this route 4 weeks ago , firstly I have to say it’s one hell of a challenge , especially if you try to do it in a day. We started from conwy rather than Machynlleth as we thought it would be easier , wrong were we as the gradients are much steeper heading south where as south to north has longer but less gradient climbs. Anyhow I would just like to put across the fact of a river that needs crossing in the first 5 miles of the route (starting in conwy) which was VERY DANGEROURS!! and only the fact myself and friend are quite agile we were able to run and jump accross this very fast flowing , deep river , then just about pass over loaded bikes to each other . For a person in their mid 50’s and above would never of got past this and could ruin a ride so close to the finish or so close to the start. You obviously know the people involved in the making of this FANTASTIC ROUTE….. but I seriously think it either needs a wooden bridge putting across or changing the route and bypassing it from sychnant pass over the backs of penmaenmawr. Well done on the great video … hope you enjoyed it . Danny . 👍🏼
Loved both videos Guy & Traws Eryri is another for the to do list, thanks. Do you mind me asking a general tyre question. What tyre width would you recommend? I watched the spec video on your Chisel and understand you are on 30 mm rims. Imagine your tyres are 2.35 or 2.4 wide as this wasn't mentioned? I have 25 mm rims and run 2.20 / 2.25 tyres normally - Maxxis Ikons front and rear at the moment but will be swapping the front out for a winter tyre as things get a bit 'squirmier'. I only ride general xc tracks & trails, nothing too nuts. What tyre width would you recommend for Traws Eryri and also what would you say is the max width for 25 mm rims? Hope you don't mind the question & keep up the great work 🙂
Hi Gav, full bike check is here. I’ve run 2.2 and 2.35 on the chisel. The only gain with narrower is slightly less weight but you’re more vulnerable to pinch flats from rocks if you’re loaded. If you want a Maxxis front to match the original Forekaster is great. Otherwise Spesh XC tyres FastTrak or Ground Control are great value. You’ll be fine running 2.35s on 25mm as most tyres labelled that wide are closer to 2.2 anyway
Thanks @@GuyKesTV , I do like the Forekaster & run one on my Whyte hardtail. Do you think I could get a 2.4 Forekaster on 25 mm rims or is that pushing it a bit & unnecessary?
@@gavgreen10 I can’t remember how wide the old Forekaster actually was. The new ‘2.4’ is actually only 2.25 though. It’s heavier and slower than the old one
I have been looking at the FastTrak & Ground Control@@GuyKesTV , what's the Maxxis / Schwalbe equivalent? Is a FT like an Ikon / Rekon / Racing Ralph & GC like a Forekaster / Nobby Nic. Subsequently, would you run a FT on the rear & GC in the front. Cheers for the advice Guy. I run tubeless btw so no worries re. pinch flats. Surprised you were running tubes on Traws Eryri?
Guy, I've thoroughly enjoyed watching these 2 parts for the route. Am very keen to get my hardtail sorted and get on this! Massive fan of your content. I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer... 1. Is the GPS route that's currently on the website the official route, so no chance of taking the unofficial routes....? 2. How did you get to the start and how did you get back from the end? As it's not a loop I feel leaving a car isn't an option, so just curious to find out if you did take trains and how that worked out? Cheers!
1 / The official route is the current GPX. Hopefully the bonus bits will be added soon as the local MP was at the launch and was genuinely interested in solving the issues. 2/ My daughter lives in Aberystwyth so I left a van in Conwy and then she dropped me off in Mach. The trains are a bit shit TBH but there are already companies who can carry you and your bike in either direction. I’m sure more will appear now the route is live too.
Your video has made me want to go to Wales and ride this route, thank you very much. Oh, and I just bought a Chisel. You've proven just how competent of a bike it is.@@GuyKesTV
We're thinking of doing the route but the opposite way - North to South. Do you think that will be just as good? Any issues you can think of? Any advice would be really appreciated!
You'd have longer off road climbs and then road descents in some places near Conwy, CoedyBrenin/Trawsfynnd and then past Cader Idris but you'd have an easier road climb up onto the slate road and it's probably equalised in other places so would still work well.
Thanks Guy, two great videos with a "must do" label ! What do you think about doing it on an eMTB. I know it depends on power modes etc but are the stops space able out enough ? I am a Cycling UK member, as everyone with a bike should be! so I am just about to order the book as well.
I know some people have already done the route on eMTB and posted their itineraries on the official Traws Eryri Facebook page. It’s well worth joining that for up to the minute accommodation and route conditions advice too
Did your gloves keep your hands dry and warm in those horrible conditions? A few degrees above freezing and sleet/cold rain is the worst weather. If so, where can I buy them? All my winter/waterproof gloves get sodden eventually.
Afraid not, they were wet and borderline cold pretty quick but TBF my legs were in a far worse state. I was numb from the hips down from the descent to Bethesda onwards. Literally had to visually check what I was standing on at gate stops as I couldn’t feel a thing 🥶The Spatz neoprene gloves are really good but a PIA to get on and off and won’t work a phone so couldn’t use them 😫
Even more respect for the chirpy commentary considering you were that cold@@GuyKesTV . I assumed you had some magic weatherproof kit for those conditions going by the cheerful chat to camera. A few degrees above zero and damp/wet/sleet is the most miserable weather. Much nicer when it drops below freezing and becomes dryer. I bought myself the Endura onsie after the dreadful Winter before last. My bike adventuring started on a five speed road bike with walking boots and my gear in a backpack and that took me all over the Yorkshire Moors and Dales before the first mountain bikes started appearing 👍
The Renegades I ran are very similar to Ikons and the only bits I struggled on in a very wet Feb was the grassy bit up past the Roman fort after Trawsfynnd.
Thank you for your reply. I am looking at doing it at the end of September and want a balance between speed and traction. If you faired okay in Feb that is reassuring.
At the risk of stating the bloody obvious it depends on how fast you want to go and how fit you are. I did it in two days in February with a fair bit of stopping to check phone notes for navigation and take pictures (which took forever on day 2 with frozen fingers) and was tight on time. Doing it with longer days on your side will make a big difference.
Any chance they can make the book smaller like the Cicerone guides ,they are more practical to get in pockets ,the maps are clearer also ...The cycling UK ones are a good read but impractical on an actual ride imho.
