For the stuff under the deep corner counter, placing it on a sheet pan makes it easy to pull everything out at once (I can't see what I'm grabbing in the "way back" there so I like to just be able to grab one thing and pull it all out at once)
Someone once said to keep water in all your empty jars and just empty them when you need them. That way you always have extra emergency water on hand as well. Could help to make rice or coffee. I thought it was a great idea so I keep water in most of my jars now. Looks great though Rachael 👍❤️🙏
I would keep the mylar bags and boxes, etc anything not metal or glass, in a metal box or metal trash can inside the cabin in case of mice and other rodents.
The popcorn tins that are gifted during the holidays are perfect to store the packaged foods in. If you don’t have any, you can buy them at thrift stores or garage sales cheap!
Your pantry at the cabin is off to a very good start. I think that you should bring up a few more items like orzo, small pasta, canned chicken and beef, spices like basil, rosemary, thyme, sage, dried peppers, dried onion 🧅 flakes, oregano and chili powder. You also might want to buy "Better than Bouillon" in beef, chicken and vegetable. Just a few that I can think of.
Love your cabin!!! I don’t think I heard you mention chicken/beef broth powder for seasoning… rice, beans, soup, etc… Just a passing thought. Thank you for opening parts of your life with us so we can learn.
I was going to say the same thing--mice. I have a place in town and the country and I'd have stuff either in glass or in a lidded metal trash can. I catch a few mice inside every year but so far no damage to the food storage.
Thinking if you could freeze dry a lot of the jarred food and such, it could last below freezing temps and wouldn't have to travel back and forth. Just a thought.
I would say we had to move out of our house for 1-2 months after a tornado heavily damaged it when I was a kid. It is those types of things that are helpful to have these setups like you do!
I have used the microwave rice on the stove top! Just add a little bit of water and put a lid on it to steam it. Thank you for sharing your pantry with us. I’m learning a lot from your channel and recently started canning! 😊
This is exactly what we do at our little getaway. Anything that is near expiring comes home with us. I take stock of things & always have enough for at least a week of meals. We need to have more on hand. We did have problems with mice but that stopped once we stuffed steel wool in all the cracks & crevices. We also store water.
Look into getting those totes that fit under beds. You could keep all cleaning and first aid stuff there and even the dog food, rice and freeze dried foods. They would be easy to load and unload into the truck. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
The ready rice can be heated in a pot/skillet just add a bit of water, can be placed into boiling water, or if you have canned beef/chicken just dump the meat and juices into it and reheat. Looks like you are almost there! I would suggest that you store some of your foods in glass containers/ canisters when you leave.
Loved the video! I've been brain storming ways for our home. It was used a part time hunting cabin. Its small but we are making it work. Just need to get crafty with storage.
Thanks for sharing what you have off grid. We have been discussing what we need just at home. It was shocking when you look at some of the portions compared to what you normally eat. Eye opening.
Having a plan for your family for if or when things happen is not crazy at all, that's very caring of you two. It's me and my child and yes we have made a plan of where we're meeting if anything happens and yes have been preparing for different situations. I think it's just being responsible for your family because nobody's gonna care for you and yours like you
Great ideas. We don't have a 2nd home but that's some things to think about. We are only in a small 1 br 1 bath 16x40 cabin but are 5 miles from town and in the woods. I've been working on getting all meat canned and not leaving any in the freezer (in case of power failure/ grid down) and also Canning vegetables. We also have been adding cans of freeze dried food and MREs to our stock. I also dehydrate alot but we don't have a freeze drier. 😅
Batteries, extra flashlights, portable generators, extra candles, oil for oil lamps. Propane for grill. Any outside solar lights around would be handy too.
When you mentioned that rice that reminded me of that time I used my rice to I just had taken the rice and put it in a pot with boiling hot water that I had in my teapot and that worked for me it might work for you to but don't know because you didn't mention a teapot
You could steam the rice put it in a bowl in a pot with water slap a lid on it and homemade steamer. Give me some great Ideas for stocking up my pantry more also Thanks
Very nice! Glass and metal sealed containers are great for cabin. Went with tall square to max space. They have the clips like my glass to kept critters from storming the pantry. Very fortunate to have a plan B location. Do you have a storm cellar away from the house or just the basement? Weather sure is becoming predictable to be rough. Thanks for sharing🌻
Don't forget about spices in your stocks. Those staples (beans, rice, etc.) won't taste very good without some spices to liven things up. While they aren't absolutely necessary for survival, it sure helps with morale. 😊
We are almost ready to start moving stuff into our river cabin that we had to totally gut and remodel, and im planning my preserving year to include stocking it as well. I love Tangi! She's just precious! I get to see her when we go to the KY picnic in sept. Thanks for sharing! I was writing a list down too as you were talking, lol. Thanks Rachel! ❤️Kacy
Love pantry videos! We have a rural property and a house in town. We split our week between the two. This is our first summer on our acreage and the critters we have to contend with are a real eye opener. Recently we had a raccoon and a possum show up together and they both attempted to destroy our barn cats automatic feeder. The possum has gone on to meet his maker but the raccoon is still around. Hard to take care of nuisance critters as we can’t set out traps in fear of our barn cats getting caught in them.
I'm such a prepper! I really enjoyed your off-grid pantry tour! Thanks for doing this Rachael. we have a 23 foot travel trailer that I keep stocked kind of like this, but your video has given me some ideas.
I have a cabin and all my dried goods are stored in mason jars or stored in large tubs so nothing gets to my food storage. Most of those mason jars are vacuum sealed. I don’t want to lose any food to a mouse.
That was my first thought. I've always lived in Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, and bugs and rodents are an issue even in a full-time, very clean residence. I do realize though that there are many regions without such an issue. I have no idea about the Lake States region. I would love, love, love to not have to worry about all that.
I was wondering about the mice too. I had mice once in my basement pantry in the house we lived in full time. It was a real battle getting them eradicated.
QUESTION: is there a video of how to prepare tinctures? I would love to learn more about herbal preparation. I didn't see a video on the channel for the herbs/tinctures...
I would definitely put your freeze dried stuff in larger glass or buckets or something more rodent proof. I would hate to see all of your hard work go to the critters.
Rachel I would love to do this at our place at the coast which is on the panhandle of fl. But we do not leave our electricity on when we leave. What would be some suggestions on what I could leave there that the heat would not be a issue for
You might mention it before the video is over, but thought I would ask, do you have water, possible can opener, a way to sterilize water if needed and glass containers to hold water? Nancy from nebraska
What about baking powder? You mentioned dehydrated potatoes are they chucked or do you do slices when dehydrating? I actually want to do some dehydrating this yr & I know I'll have plenty potatoes.
Love your bug out/getaway cabin! Any idea what kind or where to find those mylar bags? (They opened on long side.) Very smart to stock your pantry at the cabin. We do the same in our RV. Thank you for sharing!
Pre-made Freeze dried food in cans, here are links to the two main brands we buy:
Augason Farms amzn.to/45OyprD
and Mountain House amzn.to/3MNTolC
Make sure you pot some of that food in glass containers so the critters don't get into it. They will find it!
Very true.
I'm thinking the same thing. Or even putting the bagged stuff in a bucket.
Rachel we do not have Bacon & Eggs in a Can. But thanks for sharing 6-7-2023❤
I was just thinking about the critters and packaged foods!
I was just going to make a comment about that LOL
I would take that food in mylar and cardboard packaging and put it in a tote or mouse-proof bucket
For the stuff under the deep corner counter, placing it on a sheet pan makes it easy to pull everything out at once (I can't see what I'm grabbing in the "way back" there so I like to just be able to grab one thing and pull it all out at once)
Minimalistic camper/ backpacker lady here.
Jars of Minute rice or couscous, canned meat, dehydrated veggies & misc seasonings. Waay better than store bought instant meals.
Cereal with powdered milk & freeze dried blueberries, yum.
Y'all won't starve!
I thought so too until I bought a can of Augason Farms Black Bean Burger. We eat it regularly now. It's sooo yummy!
Someone once said to keep water in all your empty jars and just empty them when you need them. That way you always have extra emergency water on hand as well. Could help to make rice or coffee. I thought it was a great idea so I keep water in most of my jars now. Looks great though Rachael 👍❤️🙏
I can water whenever I have space left in a canner. Sterile water!
you missed the freeze and bust part
I’m impressed you don’t have to worry about mice in the cabinet!
I would keep the mylar bags and boxes, etc anything not metal or glass, in a metal box or metal trash can inside the cabin in case of mice and other rodents.
Bingo. Good idea.
The popcorn tins that are gifted during the holidays are perfect to store the packaged foods in.

I think microwave rice fries quite well, because its kind of pre cooked so I think you could make fried rice with it.
Love your cabin!!! I don’t think I heard you mention chicken/beef broth powder for seasoning… rice, beans, soup, etc… Just a passing thought. Thank you for opening parts of your life with us so we can learn.
I agree broths would be helpful. And maybe consider freeze drying some cheese!
May want to stock up on matches.

Great job stocking up the cabin. The mice will love what you have done. They will find a way to get into anything and everything.
I would say we had to move out of our house for 1-2 months after a tornado heavily damaged it when I was a kid. It is those types of things that are helpful to have these setups like you do!

Freeze dried eggs,, seasonings, freeze dried herbs.water,chili.
Excellent bug out location! I think you have a nice emergency pantry too. God bless!
As for beans, it might be a good idea to cook beans and freeze dry them or else can them. When they get old, they don’t cook very well.
Sending support, love, and kindness from Lexington, Michigan, USA
Canned goat ?? Oh, my !!
Just a suggestion, but do you also keep a running list of what you have at the cabin, so you know what you need to bring; like tuna, jelly, etc?
This is exactly what we do at our little getaway. Anything that is near expiring comes home with us. I take stock of things & always have enough for at least a week of meals. We need to have more on hand. We did have problems with mice but that stopped once we stuffed steel wool in all the cracks & crevices. We also store water.
Interesting challenges there. In Texas we worry about heat busting things but never considered a freeze being able to do the same.
Maybe instead of calling it a bug out place. Call it a relocation place.
Looks like a nice start and a wonderful place to spend time.
Great to be prepared. Looks like you are well on your way. Love those older cabinets. They don't make them like they use to.
Thanks for sharing Rachel.
Look into getting those totes that fit under beds. You could keep all cleaning and first aid stuff there and even the dog food, rice and freeze dried foods. They would be easy to load and unload into the truck. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

That's using your noodle. Looks great! 💚🌞

For the microwave rice: boil in bag
Thanks for sharing what you have off grid. We have been discussing what we need just at home. It was shocking when you look at some of the portions compared to what you normally eat. Eye opening.

Hello from our cabin ❤
So good to have your second home
Great ideas. We don't have a 2nd home but that's some things to think about. We are only in a small 1 br 1 bath 16x40 cabin but are 5 miles from town and in the woods. I've been working on getting all meat canned and not leaving any in the freezer (in case of power failure/ grid down) and also Canning vegetables. We use to have to do that for our RV when we were snowbirds. I didn’t know about freeze dried back then. You are definitely organized.
Batteries, extra flashlights, portable generators, extra candles, oil for oil lamps. Propane for grill.
Any outside solar lights around would be handy too.
Great ideas!
I would love an off grid cabin like that! Looks so cozy!!
Loved this video! Really interesting and food for thought. I think your both very sensible in your approach to unplanned emergencies.
What about a root cellar to store all the items that could freeze. Plus, it would be unavailable to someone or something that breaks into your cabin.
When you mentioned that rice that reminded me of that time I used my rice to I just had taken the rice and put it in a pot with boiling hot water that I had in my teapot and that worked for me it might work for you to but don't know because you didn't mention a teapot
Thanks for sharing ❤

Very fortunate to have a plan B location.
Do you have a storm cellar away from the house or just the basement?
Weather sure is becoming predictable to be rough.
Thanks for sharing🌻
Don't forget having to wash clothes... having a large bin and even a cake soap can work.
Love it! Please share or show if possible, how will you bake a bread or buns there. Have you thought of that? 💐💙🙏🇺🇸
Don't forget about spices in your stocks. Those staples (beans, rice, etc.) won't taste very good without some spices to liven things up. While they aren't absolutely necessary for survival, it sure helps with morale. 😊
Always good to have backup plan and supplies.
You are very wise to have a bug out place that is stocked. You never know from natural disasters to man made it is wise to have a place to go.
❤️Kacy
Very wise. You'll want to keep your mylar bags in something mouse-proof.
Looks good Rachael. My luck would be some less than worthy person would be watching and raid my stockpile. We have had that done at campsites before.
I would bring some yeast or freeze-dried sourdough starter.
Love pantry videos! We have a rural property and a house in town. We split our week between the two. This is our first summer on our acreage and the critters we have to contend with are a real eye opener. Get a live trap and bait with marshmallows. Cats will leave them alone. But coons and opossum will eat.
Great pantry! It’s getting there. Sounds like the next load should do it 🌺 I’m loving having freeze dried milk and eggs on hand at home.
Blessings 👍💐💞
Don't forget to stock up on firewood.
They have lots of trees they can cut down.
Great video
I'm such a prepper! I really enjoyed your off-grid pantry tour! Thanks for doing this Rachael. we have a 23 foot travel trailer that I keep stocked kind of like this, but your video has given me some ideas.
I have a cabin and all my dried goods are stored in mason jars or stored in large tubs so nothing gets to my food storage. Most of those mason jars are vacuum sealed. I don’t want to lose any food to a mouse.
I have been doing the exact same thing in buying freeze dried foods from Thrive and Auguston farms. You just never know these days.
Hi Rachel 😊
You might consider storing your Mylar bags if Mylar ready meals inside a storage container so mice or bugs can’t eat thru to them. Just a thought.
Wonderful plan.
Its ok to be prepared. To prep, bug out, bug in...help people prepare, don't be reluctant
What about ants and mice or squirrels getting into the cabin when you guys are at home?
Ants shouldn't be an issue but mice can be for the mylar, cardboard and coconut oil.
They prefer the outhouse 😄
That was my first thought. I've always lived in Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, and bugs and rodents are an issue even in a full-time, very clean residence. I do realize though that there are many regions without such an issue. I have no idea about the Lake States region. I would love, love, love to not have to worry about all that.
I was wondering about the mice too. I had mice once in my basement pantry in the house we lived in full time. It was a real battle getting them eradicated.
I think this is more like a house than a traditional cabin it some ways.
Just open rice dump in pot to heat or leave in pack
and place in boiling water to warm
Once you open a can of the premade meals, how soon do you need to consume the balance of the can?
awesome preparedness
Do you also do first aid kits and things like that just in case you need them but maybe some stop blade Band-Aids gauze Ace bandages things like that
Loving your off grid cabin videos!! These are so great. 😍
Along with that jelly, don't forget a jar or so of cowboy candy!
Dude! Now you have to do a video showing us how to do the canned meals and how it tastes! 😃😃
She’s a dudette. Far from a dude. 😂
QUESTION: is there a video of how to prepare tinctures? I would love to learn more about herbal preparation. I didn't see a video on the channel for the herbs/tinctures...
Do you have a worry about mice getting in?
My thoughts exactly.
Are the freeze dried containers critter proof ? Mice, rats, bugs etc?
What is the brand of mixed meals?😊
Exactly what I came to ask!
I've been thinking about getting some Arguson Powdered Butter... is it easy to mix up ?
It doesn't have quite the same consistency as regular pb but is great in smoothies or recipes
My experience is YES it mixes easy… then you can mild it into a stick, wrap in Saran, refrigerate to set snd voila… you have a stick of butter!!!
@@jennbamaAre you thinking of powdered peanut butter?
How do you keep the mice out of your cardboard containers of food?
I had those cabinets in a house in NY until I remodeled it. And I keep vodka in my house for that SAME reason. LOL.
Rachel, what kind of appliance is that between your two pantry cabinets? How do you use it with there being no electricity at the cabin? TFS
I would definitely put your freeze dried stuff in larger glass or buckets or something more rodent proof. I would hate to see all of your hard work go to the critters.
Nothin' cringy about having a backup property, especially considering that you have extra family. :)
Rachel I would love to do this at our place at the coast which is on the panhandle of fl. But we do not leave our electricity on when we leave. What would be some suggestions on what I could leave there that the heat would not be a issue for
Could you use the interior of that dishwasher that you don’t wash with as additional pantry?
it's not a dishwasher. It's a propane powered refrigerator - but it's currently not functional. Would like to get it repaired at some point.
Does it ever get overly hot when you’re not there? I know here in Texas we could not even leave shelf stable food in a room that gets too hot ! Lol
Into the 90's, but the cabin is mostly shaded and well insulated so I don't think it gets too bad.
So what do you do the pie filling again?
hobo pies on the campfire
What about bottled water?
Under the bed, one spare bedroom
Hello Rachel, just wondering if you ever have any problems with pests (Rats/Mice) in your cabin?
Love your bug out/getaway cabin! Any idea what kind or where to find those mylar bags? (They opened on long side.) Very smart to stock your pantry at the cabin. We do the same in our RV. Thank you for sharing!
The meal pouch bags, they came from Amazon: amzn.to/3J0d05d they're awesome, super happy with them.
Would skylink workout there?
It is available there now, but not sure if we have enough exposure to the sky with all the tree cover we have.
wht about sfety at the cabin? Arent you scared someone will break in and steal the supplies? What do you guys do for security?
♥♥♥
From experience, please put your freeze-dried foods in jars after you have opened them. Mice can and will chew through those plastic lids. 😢
