    Optimistic, but let’s see him against top defenses in the Big 12, not mediocre HS competition!

      I wouldn't call Derby mediocre. They have played in 8 of the last 10 6A State Championship games and won 6 of them. They probably have had more D1 players in the past 10 years as the rest of the state, with maybe Andale being the exception. Plus, their coach is Brandon Clark, who played at K-State under Bill Snyder, along with two of his assistants. Their tailback originally committed to KSU this summer, but then committed to Notre Dame last month.

      Derby is actually elite HS competition. While it's true that they aren't anywhere near the level of a Big 12 defense, as even elite HS play is still HS play, that is offset by the fact that Avery's offensive teammates are also not at the level of what he would be working with as starters for K-State's offense. So it's very much an "apples and oranges" comparison.
