For everyone saying it's a travel:Whilst it does look like it's a travel, there is rule called the zero step/gather step where if your hand is not under the ball or in both of your hands the dribble is considered "alive". So basically it's 0,1,2 the zero step is where he takes a step back whilst the ball is on the side of his hand then gathers and takes his 1st, and 2nd step. He travels sometimes but most of the time the step back is completely legal.
1:43 Gather steps onto the right foot, picking up his dribble with right hand, left-foot coming down is step 1, back onto right foot is step 2, left foot up-and-down for step 3. This is also EXACTLY what the NBA Referee twitter said when admitting that his Rubio stepback was traveling. Any questions?
Bruuuuh, Thank You!! I've had this equipped and Could. Not. Figure the hell out how to pull it off. I kept doing turn around fade-aways and 'tween-the-legs step backs. Finally just did it after watching this. Good looking out fr!!! You got my sub

K P K You are allowed a gather step which is essentially a third step. You don’t understand the rules of basketball. Therefore, you shouldn’t have an opinion if you don’t know what you are talking about.
I am Chilean, I play with the fiba rules, since I see nba, I always thought that everyone walked, then I discovered that they used something called in Spanish step zero, this rule allows to speed up the game, obviously, it benefits me a lot, and I implement A year ago at the FIBA, HARDEN IS A TEACHER OF HOW TO USE THIS STEP, many times if he walks, since he plays at that limit, but other times as it should be used. I am sorry for my bad english
@ 1:42 There's a dribble step (ball and the LEFT foot) Next comes a step by the RIGHT foot (gather step 1) Third step (gather step two) is the LEFT foot Then fourth step is the position step leading into the jumpshot (RIGHT foot). A total of 4 steps. First one is legal Second is legal Third is legal (finishing the gather) Fourth one is travel
Alright, let me explain... The James Harden Stepback is Not a travel, you see, James Harden does a Normal dribble Stepback then He puts his foot there (not his Pivot foot) that is called the "0 Step" then he puts his foot there (Again, not his Pivot) is now counted "1 Step"
I don't know how others say it's not a travel, but it's a 3 step travel cuz, he dribbles. then he plants his foot to step back(that's 1step) then lands(2 steps). Just my opinion. some say it's 4 steps
Harden snatches back and then does the step back, that's the main move ppl see that they think is a travel, but frfr tho, he does travel at times but eh he just has amazing footwork that some ppl can't understand
I still roll my eyes every time i see ppl defend this is not a travel. Forget about the gather step. Take away the last step where he regains his balance, wouldn't this be a regular running fade? Now you add another step to the running fade, how can it not be travel?
Its not a travel. The rule is that if he is in an attacking position you have a gather step then 2 steps after that. What it comes down to is they don't officiate "carrying" the same way they use to. Since Allen Iverson came along they changed how they call "carrying" allowing more of a underneath palming of the ball instead of the traditional hand straight on top of the ball pushing straight down to allow more creative crossovers because it was exciting for the fans and they have always made rule changes in favor of the offense. The way the game used to be called this would 100% be a travel but that's because the second his hand went underneath the ball they would consider that as him starting to gather it, no more dribbles would have been allowed. In today's Nba they allow them to sort of scoop the ball underneath and still consider that as part of the dribble so until they bring the ball into their body or other hand they aren't considered as gathering the basketball.
He lowkey do to 2 step backs but it's so fast it look like one on the first step back he dribble once and on the second he dose a real step back and shoots
Reminds me of how they had to ban Allen Iverson crossover they said he was traveling he had to change how.he brought the ball up instead of sorta of palming ...same B's but NBA today letting it stay
I am clumsy I cant do this with Harden. L+ quick tap X always turns out a lay up or normal jumpshot...i been tried whole afternoon and just put it off one time...
If Harden dribbles his right hand at the same time he steps with his right foot, it isnt a travel because then he is allowed two steps. But, if he dribbles with his right hand at the same time he steps with his left, he travels, because then he takes 3 steps.
it's not a travel, you get a gather step or a zero step, when you dribble it cancels out your steps, after that you take 2 steps no dribble then you shoot, no travel @me if you wanna argue but ik it's right it's basketball
People saying it’s Not a Travel but he picks up his dribble and then continues to do a step back without performing a basketball move in between, I’m not sure it’s one of the most controversial moves in Basketball but I consider this a Travel or carry as he’s going backwards
The thing is, when harden does it, about half of the times, it’s legal, cus he does it correct like in the video. But many times he does it different and usually then it’s ilegal, so about half off the times its ilegal, like when he gathers it before the first step. But when he does it like this, gather in the second step, it’s legal. Why its othen not called in the nba by the refs is because it’s hard to see in the action, and they cant always check the replays, but we can. Just like many other calls that we see is wrong on the replay. Just like in the jazz game, he travelled and they came out after and admitted it, but they couldnt see it on the court.
SpeedHomeAttack Nah, a "step" in nba terms is planting the other foot and lifting up the pivot foot, if you count it and look closely he only technically took two steps after the dribble
lmao these haters say it is a travel XD, he dribbles on the first step back, then uses the free two steps you're allowed to take when you are about to pick up your dribble. It's just like has same rules as a Euro-Step.
Bobby D just because the ball is hanging in the air during his dribble doesn’t mean he picked up the ball. He takes the step back during the dribble hang and then picks up with his off hand and pulls up. Just an evolution of the game is all

Not a travel. The same can be said on the first step gathering for a layup. He just going backwards with it..
Technically it's not a travel, the last "step" would be like taking a jab step after picking up the ball since you didn't lift up your pivot foot
