Smaller, older boats (IOR-style) must absolutely sail to the waves upwind, or they will stop you dead in your tracks. Methinks Mr. Thompson has not had to sail a non-planing boat under 60' in quite a while... Otherwise, this is a good, very broad-strokes, 5 min. video on steering upwind for cruisers, I'm guessing, so of course there is nothing about sail shape or trimming, or optimum pointing, etc.

I find this format of one person introducing Pip Hare and Pip in turn introducing Brian Thompson quite funny.

For a video titled How To Helm Upwind I thought it was spot on!

Now I am no professional. further, I have never sailed in my life. But is it wise to follow a cloud. Do clouds not move themselves: How can you go straight following a cloud?

You need to be selective....pick the furthest cloud that you can use for a reference. Know that they do move- pick a different cloud or star as the first one stops serving you.

sort of. he said out in the ocean. there's nothing, so a cloud is about the only object during the Daytime. then he added, In the Distance. which is relatively stable. technically stars are moving too. we use these objects With compass to cross reference.

"on a wheel like this I like to move it no more than about 2 millimeters"
    Moves the wheel 250mm

Solent millimeters are different from regular millimeters. Apparently.

I knew sb would notice, point is he was not concentrated on steering but on explaining us how to do it

This was OK, yet never touched the sail shape, tight leach line to prevent disturbance, what to do with the sail in big wind, moderate wind and light wind. Actually left out a lot of info

These videos are pretty much weak. Maneuvering in light air and flat seas is a lot different than even medium air and say 1 meter waves.
