    Edward thought abdication meant getting rid of all the boring parts of being King and keeping all the social perks. They both thought their exile would be temporary. Good on the royal family at keeping that pair at a distance.

      Charles and Camilla are identical. If you turn your back on family, I’d hate to see what you’d do to a stranger. Edward wasn’t suited to be a King, he just happened to fall in the line of sucession, like many Kings, unqualified, but adored by the serfs who work to give him luxury.

    The Queen has my undying respect for the classy way she treated Wallis. The Queen treated Wallis with respect and friendship. Even though Elizabeth is gone, she was extremely wonderful, discreet and truly wonderful. I’m sorry that I never had the opportunity to meet her, because she must have been truly wonderful.

      Perhaps a thesaurus could assist in future writings? Using wonderful 4 different times to describe Elizabeth royal is a wee bit redundant, you mention not having met the Queen with much regret, Do tell, what position in society do you hold that one should have met the Queen? but alas was a victim of unfortunate circumstance and therefore did not?

      Excuse me? An American actress who is half Black is not good enough to marry into the British Royal Family? And I suppose the Maori who married one of Queen Elizabeth's cousins wasn't good enough either? I get the impression that you think that the British Royal Family should stay lily white, for some nutty reason. So Harry married an American actress. Big bloody deal! He doesn't need your (or anyone else's) permission to marry. He married the woman he wanted to marry, whether you or anyone else on the planet liked it or not. Get over it.

  • @UrdVerdande-dt3ey
    @UrdVerdande-dt3ey 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +142

    I believed for many years that Wallis was unfairly blamed for Edward's abdication, but the more I learn about her life and her interactions with other people, the less I think she was a victim of her circumstances. Outside of what seems to be her own words (and we have recent proof of how some types of people will lie through their teeth and discredit everyone around them to achieve their goals - or to blame someoe for the goals not being achieved) there is not much to show that she was a good person or that she cared about other people.
    I become increasingly convinced that neither she nor Edward expected that he actually would have to go through with the abdication of the throne. I think they both expected that Edward was so much loved by the people of the UK that there would be public pressure to let him marry Wallis and make her his queen. Presumably they were quite surprised when the abdication was supported rather than stopped and they found themselves without a throne and a country and stripped of royal privileges, which Edward probably thought were his birthright.
    I do not think Wallis ever forgave Edward for the step down, which living in exile and losing their standing in high society, was. So many reports reveal that she was horrible to him, and his life-long obsession of getting her an HRH-title seems a desperate attempt to please a furious and scorn wife.

    • @deemariedubois4916
      @deemariedubois4916 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Yes Wallis treated ‘her David’ terribly but Wallis knew how to please a man. David liked her humiliating him. The married mistress he had before Wallis had letters from him where he says he’s been a bad naughty boy, and needed to be thoroughly spanked. To each their own but how stupid of the Prince to write such revealing letters. I have read that his father, the King, was a strict disciplinarian who frequently used the rod on his sons.
      The King knew his son’s weaknesses, knew that the heir apparent suffered bouts of morose, knew his son lacked the education needed to be King simply because he would not apply himself to his tutors frustrations. So George V had severe reservations about Prince Edward, saying "After I am dead, the boy will ruin himself in twelve months" and "I pray God that my eldest son will never marry and that nothing will come between Bertie and Lilibet and the throne.”❤

Had they put this man to serve in war like his brother, as uneducated as he was he had wanted to do this the difference would have been major to his personality. But know they wouldn’t let him for fear the air could be hurt there were other brothers those that served and knew the price of death . With that income and getting a job (something that Wallis NEVER did) she could have lived reasonable well on an income, that if she worked would have been $60k (2024 dollars) a year with no rent; because, they were living with relatives. I take umbrage to the American harlots bit. As if we arranged by act of state to press this particular harlot on The British.
    Indeed, we played our own part in warning them and did what we could to prevent the coupling of such a woman to the king.
    Nobody wanted this. Except the two themselves I guess.
    As an Amwrican not unfamiliar with manipulation, i find wallis' claims to wish to leave Edward and avoid a constitutional crisis, disingenuous.
    She may well have regreted divorcing a good man like ernest. But she was no fool being gamed by a man like edward. She was in comete control and her letters pointing to her innocence, are very convienient. In the end she did not give him up after all.

Perhaps there was a fuss made because of his position and title. He was lucky he was given a title of any kind after abdicating as that world of hierarchy he had thumbed his nose at. His wife was also fortunate to get a Duchess title and not being given the HRH was the proper decision. The shocking realisation they must have had as the months went on that they were not going to be allowed to pick up where they left off and come back to Britain setting up what would have become a rivalry between the new King and the ex king. Consequences the ridiculous selfish little man never expected, the entitlement is mind blowing.

    Wallis was unfairly maligned. It's obvious she didn't want to marry Edward, and in letters discovered many years later, she still pined for her ex-husband Ernest and expressed regrets about having married Edward. As far as Edward's threats to kill himself if Wallis abandoned him, that kind of emotional blackmail demonstrated how unfit he was to wear the crown. If he had committed suicide, Wallis could not have been blamed. Despite a life filled with parties and tours, their lives were empty.
    It's anyone's guess how Edward would have behaved during the war. His pro-German sympathies made him unsuitable, yet he might have rallied to the British cause.
    I take strong exception to Queen Mary's reason for placing the blame for King George VI's premature death. It wasn't the stress of reigning during the war that killed him. It was his compulsive cigarette smoking that gave him lung cancer. Winston Churchill was under tremendous stress during the war but he didn't develop lung cancer. The same is true of just about everyone else involved in the war. Wallis had the misfortune of having outlived Edward for 14 years. That must have been cruel. As a proponent of euthanasia, considering her many terrible health conditions, I believe she would have been better off pulling the plug.

Wallis cut in on Thelma with David. Mary cut in on Wallis with Ernest. I do not pity the any of them for the consequences of poor judgment and weak ethics. Wallis did not have to marry David. She had the funds to live a comfortable single life. It was only that women of her set consider marriage a necessity. However the scandal that descended on Wallis made her unacceptable to any decent man of substance. In that sense, David was her only option for her preferred lifestyle.

    I think that she was socially ambitious but not kind. I don’t think that she could find a way out of the relationship after the abdication. It is very difficult to be married to an obsessive partner, and I married my one through peer group pressure. It was costly and my spirit was crushed. I wished him away and was broke but free. I love 💕 my freedom and choices and have had a wonderful life. She had no escape and to compromise. She was much disliked. I am kind QED.

      It’s extremely easy, in my experience, to remove oneself from an overzealous suitor. Wallis’ problem was not how to get out of marrying Edward, it was how to get rid of him without Edward arranging for Wallis to be shunned from Society for ever afterwards.

      As Arthur Miller said “Most people settle for half”. It wouldn’t do for me. I didn’t know how I could secure my freedom but I got on my bike and got a job. @@Woodman-Spare-that-tree
