My dad was a carpenter and always said it was so much easier to build a house from scratch then to do a restoration on an old house. I would think this is a similar situation. Almost seemed there wasn't much left of the old boot and it would've been easier just to build a completely new pair.

It's hard for me to understand why someone would spend a lot of hard earned money on a quality piece of gear and then neglect it so badly. Kudos to Nick's for their willingness to repair these boots.
Every Nicks video I watch, I just can’t comprehend how much is put into the whole process of making boots. The machinery and maintenance of, the talented cobblers, shipping and receiving, all the materials needed… it’s amazing that it all comes together. I would have to believe that everyone involved must enjoy and take personal pride in their work to produce such great product. Thank you all.
Had a pair of Danner quarries for about a year, never conditioned or cleaned for a year. Bought saddle soap and obenaufs. Being new to cleaning, i learned alot within that hour. But i find it enjoyable

I was thinking the same thing. I’m a paint/body mechanic and yes you see a lot of this, they use and abuse nice stuff. (70k work trucks) But it’s keeping us all in business! 💪🏼👊🏼

Well, when you’re working 80hrs a week- your boots are about the last thing you’re thinking of when you’re off- and you just get a new pair when they get worn out...
This was fascinating. I am waiting for my first pair of Nicks and seeing the work that goes into these just makes me happy that i splurged and went ahead and ordered the care kit too.
I always like to watch "biker dude" when he stitches these boots with care, authority and no fear . I'm sure he is a gentle giant in person and I hope he didn't mind me calling him that. I did ride myself in my younger days on a Sportster with some nasty mods 🤙👍 Ride on brother !

Did the customer state how long they'd had the boots? I want to know how long it took them to damage them that badly.
I'm amazed that any part of those boots were worth saving to rebuild.
The amount of dirt in those boots was quite astounding. With the amount of damage it almost seems like it would have been better to just get a new pair and learn to take care of them given that the leather of the uppers was already damaged due to neglect and would have a shortened life span.
the uppers with routine conditioner would still outlive us anyways

It's going to be closer to 24 weeks. I ordered mine at the end of February and I just got the notification that they were started at the beginning of this week.

Should of rebuilt with the double stuffed leather to account for how it won't be cleaned or conditioned until the soles disappear again.

@@TommyNitrothat is true, i take care of mine.. but when the sole is warn off there is no maintenance that will fix that and the holes in the leather can still open up. You can clean and oil all you want but all things wear out eventually even with maintenance. These are still gonna last a long time compared to 99% of the boots out there. You should not feel anything about someone else's boots lmao.
@@mr.monitor. I just don't understand why people will drop $500 on a pair of boots and then trash them with no maintenance. There might not have been holes, cracks, etc in the upper had they been cared for. Dirty, dry leather is brittle leather. Had the owner taken care of them they may have just needed a new sole.
@@TommyNitro I agree, when I was in the Army, especially before 2006 when we still wore black boots, we were drilled to take good care of our boots as they would in turn take good care of our feet.

Great video and one can see what really goes into the construction of these boots by real artisans... If you don't need these boots for working, you won't want to wear them, but IF YOU DO NEED THEM, you don't want to be wearing anything else...!

*"Just buy a new pair!" Actually it costs less to repair them than to actually buy a new pair. Also, this is their job. This is what the customer wanted. We shouldn't be saying "Get a new pair!" lol 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣! The money goes to the business to keep it going. They buy new materials, tools, repair machines, cleaning stuff, shining sprays and creams, conditioners for the boots when they bring their colors back to life, waterproof supplies, etc. So its not wasteful.*
*Price starts at $319 for rebuilds according to the website. Then there's options to select that can add onto the price. Also I checked on the site, and please people clean off your boots before mailing them in! They charge $40 to clean your boots. So save yourself the money, and clean your boots! It says on the website that they actually prefer you clean them.*
It looks like some real good repair work family was in the business but we fixed people shoes we didn't do this much as you did you ever need a supplier the company out of Memphis will actually sell you most of whichever you need thanks
I guess this pair is owned by the CEO of of Nicks and he just ordered a new applicant to rebuild it to see if he's skilled enough as a cobbler.😁

All I know is that watching how these are made keeps making me want a pair of Nicks.. My wife says I need to stop watching boots being made
The skills of this team of craftsman are remarkable, without question. But one has to wonder what the cost of this repair was in comparison to the cost of a new pair of boots. And was it really worth the effort? It's like, hey the roof and doors of this car are ok, so let's just build a new car around them. You're left with a brand new car with an old slightly rusty roof and doors with a few dings and scrapes. What's the actual point?
I have to wonder if reusing the upper parts justifies the labor required to reuse them. Seems like it would just be cheaper to make a new pair.
I'd imagine the labour and materials to make new uppers is more expensive than the labour to just cut them free of the old lowers and clean them up. The customer would also then have to break in the uppers again when they probably like how they fit and feel after being worn for so long hence having them rebuilt rather than buying a new pair.
@@Svenz0r Maybe, I've never done leather work so I could be wrong. But seeing as they already have all the machines and tooling at hand for making new stuff I'm guessing it's a wash at best. And as far as breaking them in, new boots generally never made my ankles hurt. It's generally more the lowers than the uppers that abuse your feet till they get broken in.
I'm guessing that this sort of repair is more about wanting to keep as much of the original boot than just doing the most economical thing. Which is fine. I haven't looked at Nick's terms either. Might be that when you buy a pair form them this sort of service is part of what you get, regardless of if it's the economical thing to do.
I really doubt that there are some financial reasons to do that. More like showing the skills of cobbler or in case of some personal attachments to the boots

Nice refurbishment of those boots. I recognise what looked to be a 270° welt amongst other stitching. Did I see the Blake rapid stitch used? Or was that just the stitch down? I gotta pay more attention.
Once the boots are restored, they can be used for over 30 years. I wanted to know how much was the dollar value for the restoration of these boots shown in the video?

I've watched many of these Nick's videos, but have never seen a glue application that required that breathing apparatus..... any insight into why on this pair?
Haven't watched fully, but shoemaking glues are extremely powerful and potentially cancer-causing. Very very strong stuff

Not judging anybody but being ex military, personal pride would of stepped in long ago!, you would never see me with neglected kit, especially my boots.
Myself having come from a military family my dad who was in WW2 and Korea took extreme care of his boots as do my sons who are now serving . Good boots can make all the difference to a solder able to do his duty. Thanks for your service friend from Canada 👍

I am not sure what Nick's fascination is with ruff outs. If they say its cut resistance I would laugh, a cut is a cut. Is it scuff resistant? Is it because Clean leather is hard to find? I couldn't imagine how to even clean and condition ruffs.
The answer is yes, too cracked.
I bought a pair of Nick's boots at a thrift store, still in the box . I really don't have money for a new pair, can I have them rebuilt for my feet ? And can I change the type of sole ? I know it's a lame thing to ask but I just want happy feet .

There was almost nothing reused.
It's as close to building from scratch as it can get.
At what point does @Nicks do a cost benefit analysis and say "nope" its not worth the cobblers time...the customer needs to just buy new boots?
I spend the extra money on $125-150 work boots just because they last longer and I don’t need to give two sh1ts about them until I toss them out in a couple years m.

In that bad of a condition, I'm wondering if it's even worth repairing. So much is replaced that they'll need to be broken in again. I'm sure dismantling then rebuilding the whole boot but 2 pieces of leather is more work than just building new from scratch. A repair service is a repair service though. I can't knock the diligence.
This video is a little bit amusing to me. The only part of the original boot is the tongue and upper sides. The rest of the boots are new and now tri-colored.
Well, it’s kind of the point. They basically build you an almost new pair of boots for about half the cost, and the reused upper is already broken in so they are comfortable that much faster.
Had they been cleaned and conditioned once every 2-4 weeks this might of just been a standard resole.
@@alexhamon9261 that’s actually a bit more frequently than Nicks recommends, but yeah, regular care could have prevented a lot of that.

A quick brush, maybe damp wipe, and submerge those in a vat of your favorite leather conditioner!... Maybe a big too far gone for that. Another excellent repair!
