I really enjoy your channel Kristie! Thank you! By the way, my grandfather was from Toishan and he had a Cantonese restaurant in Chicago from the 1930s to the early 1970s. Louis Armstrong, the famous trumpet player and singer, was a frequent patron during his time in Chicago. (My family has autographed photos of him that he gave to my grandfather.) I am very glad that Louis Armstrong and his wife (and others) found my grandfather’s restaurant to be a welcoming place during a cruel era of segregation.
Wow! Your family has to hold on to that photograph! Did they say anything about what he liked to eat at the restaurant? His Corner chop suey came out in 1926, I am hoping to do a chop suey popular culture episode that showcases chop suey found in arts and music! This is so cool! Did your family keep anything else from the restaurant?
This is the description for it: Minced veal shaped into small balls, then cook in curry sauce made from butter, onion, flour, curry powder and chicken or beef stock, then pour on rice. It’s the condiment that makes this dish: olives, sweet pickles, onions, peppers, eggs, chestnuts, almonds, lettuce, boiled ham, Bombay duck, American cheese and chutney.
