People need to remember that franchise centres rarely come along. The Leafs went over a decade without one and they had very little success. Find your core, build around them. Matthews is your core. You don't buy art, if you don't have a house to hang it in. You don't buy 5 Toyota's when you can buy a Lambo. Keep him and enjoy him for the next 15 years
If Nylander can become a 30 goal scorer and consistent 70 point player (which he can) and if Marner keeps developing like he has been then I meaaaaaannnnnn.......
The Leafs trading of Auston Matthews for more talent would be incredibly stupid, for one thing the Leafs don't need a lot of new players because they already have quite a good bunch of young players already, all they really need is maybe one top defenseman and that's it,the Leafs are very close to being a contender right now, even the thought of Toronto trading Auston Matthews is totally ridiculous. Bob.
A) They had Nash for 9 seasons before trading him. B) Matthews is already far better than Nash ever was C) Matthews is a centre, more important than a winger. D) They got Dubinsky and Anisimov. Those players were decent, but definitely not the players that turned the team around. Bobrovsky is probably the main reason
regdude bill it’s still comparable. The Blue Jackets objectively got better after they dumped their franchise player and have had sustained success since then, minus one season. The point was there has been other successful trades involving franchise players since Lindros.
7:00 Phil Kessel trade. They traded away a player 3 years post draft, and put up 36 goals. Could have been considered a franchise winger, and BOS got a windfall, mostly due to the picks all being high.
Why talk about precedents set in a non-cap eral? If the Leafs trade Matthews for lots of good young players that just happen to all be decent, they'll still be tight against the cap. The team that wins a trade will almost always be the team that gets the best player.
This Rob guy is right. The leafs have two young, goal scoring wingers who can hold their own. Let's say 'zona goes after him... A top three pick in next year's draft turns into Joe Velano, who is an elite center, Keller (who's rediculously skilled), and oel who, when paired with doughty (potentially) next year, that deal starts to sound pretty nice. Just saying........
If the assets they get back are worth it it might make sense. Matthews is a top 10 center in the league. What if they traded him for a top 30 center and a top 20 defenseman.... would the leafs be better with Matthews or let's say Johansen and Josi?
i must have had 30 different coments on that article rob vollman wrote lol including the arizona package i came up with that...just because if the 1st pick is number 1 thats rasmus dahlin
I can't believe you guys are even considering that trade with Arizona. The Coyotes have no offer that would replace Matthews as a number ONE center. They could offer Ekman-Larsson, Max Domi, Jakob Chychrun, Clayton Keller, Christian Dvorak and Dylan fucking Strome and I'd turn it down. You can't win in this league without a number 1 center and as good as Keller Dvorak and Strome are, and may be in the future, none of them are a guaranteed true number 1 guy. The leafs are in great shape right now. Stick to the plan and hopefully we find another defenseman in the next decade and a half of Matthews dominating the league
You saw how bad Toronto was for years without a #1 centre. We get one and trade him for a defenseman? If this Vollman has a job in hockey he should lose it.
I agree he had some good points. The one thing Vollman glossed over when talking about the Lindros trade is that the Nordiques only landed Roy because they moved to Colorado and were no longer division rivals, and it was one of the most uneven trades of all time, and without that trade they were not likely to win the Stanley Cup.
rivahkillah Also the Nordiques already had a top line centre in Joe Sakic that made the loss of Lindros not as bad. The Leafs don't have a second centre that could easily replace Matthews
And the Nordiques also had Sundin Nolan, and Kamensky. Great players, but it wasn't until Roy arrived that they were able to jump to the next level. So in wrap-up they were a team with quite a bit of talent, and were able to make a great trade getting rid of Lindros, and a great trade to get Roy as well. If the Leafs are able to make a trade where they acquire a solid 1st line centre and a star dman, I think it's an avenue that should be explored.
On what planet are you taking Matthews over Crosby...yah you get more time with Matthews but what has he done to prove that he can take the leafs anywhere so far?? We’ve seen what Crosby can do and he’s still doing it as well as ever!!
Crosby is better right now, but Crosby is 30 with a history of injuries. Thinking long term its better to keep Matthews and have him for the next 10+ years. Already is an elite talent in the league.
I laughed at first, but then i thought OEL, 1st rd pick possibly (rasmus dahline), max domi, keller.. Ya i would think about trading Matthew's, hypothetically of course i would think about it though....
Toronto finally has a bonafide elite #1 center in Mathews so there is no point in trading him. Only deal that makes sense is getting an elite young center back + top picks + young dman
Reporters and journos type up insanely stupid stories all the time that are just stupid and are forgotten. His was at least interesting and started hundreds of conversations...and shit the lindros trade happened, tho not the same as Matthews
Wow thou are desperate for attention. Zero content. Idea for next podcast. Leafs should draft Martian defenseman. Or how about "Let's Fire Babcock and replace him with Andi Petrillo."
yah but both are in late 20s and matthews is only 20 they have 5 good years and matthews would have 10 years and can play with kucher and still get 30 - 40 goals
Auston Matthews is going to be a career Leafer. I guarantee it.
I can see him going on a few runs with em then hop ship to like Arizona if there even a team in the distant player
People need to remember that franchise centres rarely come along. The Leafs went over a decade without one and they had very little success. Find your core, build around them. Matthews is your core. regdude bill Well Said!
I'd take the 5 Toyotas...
Well you only have a 1 car garage.
Rob was a good sport considering the guys pretty much made fun of him the whole time. Kinda rude
If Nylander can become a 30 goal scorer and consistent 70 point player (which he can) and if Marner keeps developing like he has been then I meaaaaaannnnnn.......
DanJSmy no
DanJSmy Nylander did score 22 goals

AM34 and McDavid are the only untouchable players in the NHL. I don't care what comes back in the trade, you lost.
Matthew's is just top 50
7:00
The Blue Jackets traded their franchise player in Rick Nash a couple years ago and immediately became a contender
A) They had Nash for 9 seasons before trading him.
B) Matthews is already far better than Nash ever was
C) Matthews is a centre, more important than a winger.
D) They got Dubinsky and Anisimov. Those players were decent, but definitely not the players that turned the team around. Bobrovsky is probably the main reason
Rich Nash was never franchise LOL
regdude bill it’s still comparable. The Blue Jackets objectively got better after they dumped their franchise player and have had sustained success since then, minus one season. The point was there has been other successful trades involving franchise players since Lindros.
HES NOT A FRANCHISE PLAYERRR
Matt Hargest lol. care to explain?

Imagine how much they could get from Arizona .

Four 1st-rounders in 2 consecutive years and a Norris candidate.
The only deal that I would trade Matthews would be for McDavid. Leafs would have to add someone like a Kapenen or Brown but I would do it.
Why is this even a topic...
If the assets they get back are worth it it might make sense. Matthews is a top 10 center in the league. What if they traded him for a top 30 center and a top 20 defenseman.... would the leafs be better with Matthews or let's say Johansen and Josi?

OEL, Keller STROME, DOMI, 2 first rounders, etc, etc.
Toronto finally has a great center so know they want to trade mathews 5 year contract is not even over yet
"Why the leafs need to trade William Nylander... 14:18
Oh man
You saw how bad Toronto was for years without a #1 centre. We get one and trade him for a defenseman? If this Vollman has a job in hockey he should lose it.
I would never trade Matthews but if we had to I would trade him to Buffalo in return for Alex nylander Casey Mittelstadt and a first-round pick
This didn't age well
Might be a franchise player...... already has had 1 concussion. I could see an injury strickened career
IDK why leafs fan are so butthurt about this. Vollman had some very nice points.

If the Kings offered Kopitar and Doughty, you wouldn't think about it?
If u can get Strome,Keller,OEL I would take that as a leafs fan as a Coyotes fan I would prob quit watching the team for how dumb that would be
On what planet are you taking Matthews over Crosby...yah you get more time with Matthews but what has he done to prove that he can take the leafs anywhere so far?? We’ve seen what Crosby can do and he’s still doing it as well as ever!!

Connor Mcdavid Is next.
The Leafs actually should trade Nylander at some point though I don't know why that one was a joke
Relax leafs aren't gonna trade Matthews
I laughed at first, but then i thought OEL, 1st rd pick possibly (rasmus dahline), max domi, keller.. Ya i would think about trading Matthew's, hypothetically of course i would think about it though....
Toronto finally has a bonafide elite #1 center in Mathews so there is no point in trading him. Only deal that makes sense is getting an elite young center back + top picks + young dman
No NO nONO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.... NO
Reporters and journos type up insanely stupid stories all the time that are just stupid and are forgotten. His was at least interesting and started hundreds of conversations...and shit the lindros trade happened, tho not the same as Matthews
Lmfao
Mathews 2nd best in the NHL.......Steve, come on man...come on...Thats silly. None the less, dont trade Mathews.
Wow thou are desperate for attention. Zero content. Idea for next podcast. Leafs should draft Martian defenseman. Or how about "Let's Fire Babcock and replace him with Andi Petrillo."
Just throwing something out here..... Matthews for Erik Karlsson 1 for 1....would leafs do that or would they ask for more?
highly unlikely. Not going to trade a 20 year old franchise center to a rival. If they were it would be for a young franchise defenseman in return.
matthews to bolts for stamkos and hedman
yah but both are in late 20s and matthews is only 20 they have 5 good years and matthews would have 10 years and can play with kucher and still get 30 - 40 goals
Leafs wouldn't take that. no way.
ha
Eichel > Matthews
Kyle Irvine Mathews>Mcdavid>Eichel
Only in Buffalo.
Anyone > Eichel. Two Mcs got drafted that year. #1. McDavid, #2. McBust.
Kyle Irvine 🤣
