I got so good at the SNES version that my friend in the neighborhood asked me to show him how to beat it. I remember I went into his house to play the game with him and his Dad got so enthralled by how I was playing the game that he watched me play through the entire game, every single level and it took like an hour or so to beat it. UN Squadron was one of my favorite games as a kid from the 1989-1993 era.
for my first SNES game (outside of SMW), my parents offered UN Squadron or Final Fight. I chose UN Squadron. Everyone at school thought I was crazy for not chosing FF. In retrospect it was the right choice. FF was a poor port, but UNS was an awesome port! At that time, when I first loaded the intro, it blew me away, and the music is awesome. In the end I did buy Final Fight.. but for the Sega CD. I do wish the Turbo or Sega attempted a UN Squadron port, it would have been interesting to see how it would be like
On the Stick I loved both UN Squadron and Carrier Airwing. Back in the day in arcades I kinda liked Carrier Airwing just slightly more and the graphics and gameplay just looked a bit more polished with smoother textures.
I have to say this game might be on my list of my top 10 favorite SNES games. After playing it I went back to watching the OVA of Area 88 and in doing so I added a side plot to the game. When playing as Shin I set a side goal to end the game with at least $1.5 million so he could buy out his Area 88 contract and return to Japan and his beloved Ryoko.
It would have been funny to have a little in game easter egg, that when you hit 1.5 mill, you just turn around, leave the screen, fade to black and GAME OVER
You hit the nail on the head with this dude, as awesome as the Arcade version was (and still is), the SNES version edges it out given the extra content and superior sound quality, now i'll go back to dreaming of the Arcade home port we never got on the SNES, Carrier Air Wing.
Really enjoying your Capcom Chronology! I'm not really familiar either version of the game but I am keen to check them out fully now. The amount of research you must put into your video's sets them apart from other retro channels and puts them to a higher league for me. Your attention to detail in the history section is much appreciated and I always learn something new. Thanks again!
This one is special to me. One of my first loves on SNES. UN Squadron was the first game on the system I ever finished on my own. And just like all Capcom games on SNES, I absolutely love the music.
Love Area 88, arcade and SuFami versions. I also love U.S Navy/Carrier Airwing which was considered a suedo sequel without the license. I kept waiting for a home port but it never happened. It would have made an awesome MEGA-CD game, like so many other CPS-I games. I own the arcade board, wish I owned Area 88 as well but it is so pricey these days!! I do remember mags at the time calling the SuFami version superior to the arcade and was considered a more "complete" version. Much like Turtles in Time.
Capcom had a mapper of their own for the Japanese version of Commando, Nintendo of America forced Capcom USA to use a Nintendo mapper for the US release. Stupid policy.
@@SameNameDifferentGame A very few third party titles with their own mappers released late in the NES's lifecycle. Unlicensed games sometimes have mappers of their own. The SNES has several memory chips, from Nintendo, Capcom, Seta, and Argonaut. Nintendo made the DSPs, the SA-1, the SDD1, and in cooperation with Argonaut: the Super FX chip. Capcom made the Cx4 chip for the games Mega Man X2 and Mega Man X3. Seta made a series of chips that enhance the gameplay.
I can't think of any licensed NES games that used third-party mappers off the top of my head, but yeah, things were different in the SNES era for sure. In my Super NT video I talked a bit about those and tested a couple of the lesser-used ones.
Just an observation: Manami Matsumae was the main composer for the first Mega Man, not the second game, which was spearheaded by Takashi Tateishi. But... Considering that certain themes she created in the first Mega Man remained in the following episodes, so... Yeah, she's still appearing on Mega Man 2. She's a genius composer!
If you get hit in the arcade version, you simply lose a portion of your life bar (depending on what hit you). There is no full depletion for a few seconds while you wait for most of your life bar to recover. I prefer Shin in the arcade version. Yes, his weapons are a weaker version of Micky's and he can only buy the basic versions of sub weapons, but he has a smaller hit box and he can fire his primary weapon much faster which is great for taking out larger targets.
Nice job, just curious are there any plans to cover a game with a Master System port in the near future? With so many titles available in Europe and Brazil there is just so much potential such as Sagaia (Darius II), Chase H.Q., Smash TV (not a good port to the SMS honestly) hell it even got an impressive port of Aladdin.
Do you know how long I was trying to remember the name of this game?! Do you know how many days I've gone through remembering playing this game?! Thank you for covering this game. I fkn loved this and wished I could play it again, but never remembered the title. Now, I can try to find a way to play.
According to that same interview I quoted (linked in the description), Area 88 had already ended and the guys at Capcom just did it because they liked it and wanted to do a non-hard sci-fi shooter, despite it not being super relevant with "the kids."
Obscure to you maybe, Area 88 was very popular as both manga and OVA. It even had a slimmed down version of OVA 1&2 released in cinemas as well as the 3rd part. It is just a shame the superior OVA version never made it to DVD. I know Dicotek have released it, but it looks like a VHS source. The LD box in Japan is gorgeous, I do not know why it was not used. They need to do a BD release and scan the film for the OVAs, not just the inferior film edit!
Cool videos! I have no idea why I didn't subscribe to your channel till just now. Anyway I enjoyed both the arcade and SNES ports of this game. The ending isn't so great in the arcade but you do feel a sense of accomplishment if you finish it. The SNES port you have to finish on normal I think to get the real ending, I think if you do it on easy it just goes right to the credits same thing as Street Fighter 2.
I love how you add the little snippets of advertisements at the end, this time including what I'm assuming was a Spanish (I'm bad at distinguishing romance languages) advertisements. Aside from that, Area 88/UN Squadron is definitely a fun shmup, though I find the reverb of the SNES music slightly irritating. Capcom's choice of instruments on the SNES at this time were usually like that, so I'm not surprised. $20-$30 isn't really a bad price for a SNES game nowadays, though, since I've found a lot of them are very expensive compared to their Genesis counterparts, and even NES games.
Yeah, that was from a Spanish promo tape. As for the sound, I hear that complaint a lot, but that doesn't bother me. I actually love Capcom's choice of instrumentation on the SNES. As for the price, it's not terrible, but it is an indication of how crazy the market has gone in the last few years.
Did you get yourself a nice flashy mic. Noticed there's no lapel mic this time. Sounding nice and bassy. Saw a copy of this in a local games store a while back and didn't pick it up. Was going for about £15 for the cart on its own. Probably should have grabbed it. I like grabbing up licensed games due to how they likely will never get re-releases. Didn't actually know this was one. Gonna need to go on a hunt I think.
Could you imagin the SNES version with 2 players? "NOOO I WANT GREG!" "Wait which one is me?" "Oh great slowdown, that's the third time in 30 seconds."
Very great review. The Arcade OST is I think Manami Matsumae's finest work. I love it so much, that I actually have the entire thing on my channel, from a 1990 Pony Canyon CD release.
You forget to mention the gamer mode (you can get it using the second player control) that makes the game much harder, that is something to be considered, apart from that I pick SNES version in this case.
@@SameNameDifferentGame I have Castlevania and Zelda. And I play the snot out of those. And had Nintendo kept doing the classics, My cube would never be obsolete.
Sega CD, IMHO, is an underrated console that doesn't get the luv it deserves... If not, u should explore trying to snag those games... The 3rd world War especially... u start out at 5 military strength and 5 economy strength if you're playing as USA, and while it's kinda hard to "buy out" countries and take over economically LONG TERM (damn revolts! Lol), it's fairly easy to just invade and battle it out to take over militarily, which was how at one point playing that game I wound up having a 9 economy that eventually fell to friggin 3, but I built up my military so big, that I had that part built up to 22 lol... it was so cool seeing the world map like 2/3 all USA blue... all of the AMERICAs (poor Canada, sorry guys, I know u never did anything to anyone, but world domination is at stake here), all of the middle east except Israel, most of the India region, a few goof countries in europe...it was awesome to see the world tremble at my might!!! Of course I fucked it all up and caused the end of the world when I eventually did try to invade and take over Isreal, lost the friggin battle, and decided to launch a series of ICBM and Nuclear strikes at em to soften em up hahaha Finally, here's a sentence one probably never thought they'd hear, but even though it ends the game and u lose, it's so cool to see a series of Nukes and even satellite attacks back and forth to multiple countries, then everyone just starts launching missiles at each other, then the screen/map goes all red, and u say "shiiiiit.... welp, looks like I went too far and caused a global nuclear holocaust, ending civilization and LIFE as we know it--- WORTH IT!"

I had both and yes you chose right, at the time I mite have felt that you were wrong, but no you were right
There was a spinoff to UN Squadron in the arcade called Carrier Airwing which never saw the light of day to home consoles.
Yeah, it was a sequel with no license, basically. Weird that it's never been brought home in any way.

I don't think it's quite in my top ten, but I do like it quite a bit. And especially for a game released so early in the system's lifespan!
Admittedly I grew up a Genesis fan so I didn't play as many (though I'm making up for lost time right now.)

9:00, that's only true in the SNES version.
I personally think that the SNES version is superior to the Arcade. The only drawback is the two player option.

Absolutely! Especially with SuperFX working on the SD2SNES now!

Street Fighter 2 is next, isn't it?
Close, but no cigar!
So pretty much the SNES version is arcade perfect ?
No, I wouldn't say that. It loses 2 player mode, mixes up the stage order, changes the final stage completely, adds more planes...
Love the anime
I still wish Nintendo had kept going with the N.E.S. classics for the gameboy.
Eh. I can see that, but they were kind of overpriced for what they were and weren't great adaptations.
