i always get hype when i see a video from you since i know by now that you have a genuinely wide knowledge and real passion for this era of gaming (esp ps1/ps2) and will not only do justice to games i know, but might even reveal a few corners of this era i don't know about (which is rare)! keep up the great work, you're killing it !
PS1 era horror aesthetics were the definition of "limitations boosts creativity". The mix of the uncanny valley 3d models and cutscenes plus the fact that game companies were more creative back in the day really makes these games hold up to the test of time for me
They sure don't make them like they used to. PS1 era horror games are still the peak in my opinion. I also enjoy the newer remakes, but the good old classics still outperform modern horror games in my opinion. I still very much enjoy playing games like the old RE titles, the Parasite Eve games, the Dino Crisis games and stuff like Koudelka or Silent Hill.
seeing the cutscene from parasite eve for the first time i'm glad i never played it as a kid... that is literally nightmare material and would keep you up at night
ps1 artstyle had what i call 'semi anime' artstyle which somewhat between anime and realistic. speciaifcally 90s anime is the art direction that being emulated like something from 'ghost in the shell' for example which was a style that had somewhat of realistic physical proportion coupled with anime facial features that still werent too cartoony you can see it many title not just horror . on top of that there was a lack of definition in the coloring and outlining on purpose while using non contrasting low saturated colors . all of this blurred the line between reality and imagination and created that unique aesthetic.
I know what you mean! I’m. A huge RE fanboy, but I feel they just had a more marketable product compared to the other great horror games of that era. Both those series are very underrated!

Still wish for more indie games going for ps2 aesthetics thu Before watching the video I gotta say I respect the ps1 but I was never gonna sit down and play ps1s massive library of game because my Nostalgia is for ps2 and I didn't have a ps1 but after watching I gotta say Vincent you Single handedly made me want to play these games and many more ps1 games Thank you Vincent amazing video as usual

Exactly! There’s something beautiful about a developer making do with what little they had back then. It made for some really special games!
When you started talking about sound design in horror, I for some reason went right to Kenji Eno with that Wind game and Enemy Zero.
Oooo now that’s a game I’ve missed out on. Looks interesting tho, I’m intrigued 😅

Dark Souls 1 gives that PS1 aesthetic vibe. That scene in particular, reminds me you open the gate to Sen’s Fortress.
Very much so! Dark souls has a very ps1 grunge feel to it at times 😅
1st comment sweet boiiiiii. My favorite TH-camr. Always bringing the heat.
You already know!
Good shit keep it up mane
I appreciate that my friend! Love the profile pic by the way 😁

Absolutely! A lot of the modern titles are too similar, given a few great ones like Visage or Tormented Souls. The classic ones are just timeless!
Great work Vyn. Love to see it. We gotta play soon my guy. Keep it up.
2:01 where are these Playstation wh*res you speak of? Asking for science observation obviously.
I literally was waiting for this comment 😂
GREAT work on this. Would you consider doing one on PS1 FPS such as Doom, Final Doom, and Quake II ??
Will add it to my list of to-do’s! I’m always open to anything that allows me to play the classics 😎

Was no problem for me
Lmao definitely was for me 😂

I definitely agree! It was a beautiful formula
Its a shame stuff like Clock Tower and Alone in the Dark were never as successful as Resident Evil.

Yo Vyn, u got a tracklist for the ambient tracks u used? Would defintiely appreciate it
I’ll dig em up for you!

This uncanny valley era was perfect for horror
Loved it!
@@Vynsent Even as a kid, I remember thinking that some non-horror games of this era looked really creepy. It's a very unique aesthetic.

Absolutely! Definitely grab yourself one, they can be relatively cheap 😁 A lot of great games to be played from that era!
Nice Video essay, but are you one of the few who liked Overblood?……
I’ve never finished it, but I dabbled a bit for this video. It wasn’t too bad! The visuals and atmosphere kept me intrigued 😅
