My university has a popular textile program and one of the things that I learned from my friends in the program was how wide and varied the field is. One girl I knew was working on improving the 'fabric' on the outside of tennis balls. It was pretty cool!

I've worked almost 7 years as a textile designer and became sick of working under someone on the same sort of styles. Now I want to freelance

Thank you so much for sharing about the real side of degrees and business. I think I've learnt more outside of my graphic design course. You are right they leave a lot out that is so important. I found there wasn't enough time given to learning the software ID AI PS Dreamweaver Premier and these are quite in deptjh programs. Please don't get me wrong I'm glad I did the course and am coming up to graduation. Again thank you for your real approach to your life as a textile designer which is what I want to do to. Please share anything and everything. TFS. BTW can I visit your studio:)

Wonderful! Started designing textiles in the 90"s after getting a degree in Textile Art in Canada. Just as I was on a roll and forming a business, I had a major injury, so had to put all that on hold until recently, so very excited to hear your story. Hope to have a successful story to tell on youtube in 5 years, like you!

Wow! Where in Canada, Christine? I used to live right in the heart of the fashion district of downtown Toronto, never knew there is a Textile Art school:) best of luck on your reinvention!

So fantastic to hear your story. What trend companies would you recommend? I would love to dabble in pattern and textile design for my own products.

Thanks for shedding some light on your process- the notes about reinventing your popular designs and creating collections instead of pounding out a bunch of completely different designs are great advice.

Great video ! :) I studied textile design at university, I kinda feel like it was a waste of time. Your just a minion in the eyes of the university. I probably would have learnt better If I had better guidance earlier on maybe I would have stuck to short courses instead and just worked any old job, as I am not an academic person. The tutors just like banging on about the best designer out of the class. I like the practical / experimental side, but doing work placements and internships for nothing and not getting anywhere is pretty disheartening. Its quite a cut throat industry if you want to work in fashion or interiors. Maybe it was the wrong subject for me I don't know. I love being creative, just employment is never guaranteed in creative subjects. Blood sweat and tears.
