***** Yo man.. chill. Writing gotta come by itself you know. Gotta forget all techniques you learned, and trust your muscle memory. Imagine a sound in your head, and try to reproduce it. Compose in ur mind, even before you touch the guitar. When you get able to connect whats in your mind to the sound you produce, then, you are expressing yourself through the instrument, which is amazing for music. Also, learn how to listen.. if you play with some friends.. listen to them. Dont try to show skills around, and make fancy things you know.. try to fill in the part and reach a beautiful sound. Its easier to compose like that.
being able to play with a metronome is important, its not a matter of opinion or style. every piece is written in a time signature (mostly 4/4) and has a BPM. if the song is in 120 bpm and your hitting outside the beats every few notes, its going to sound like shit, plain and simple. unless your trying to add swing to your playing by hittin the off beats like in jazz. moral of the story, learn how music is structured before attempting to write anything, its going to make you a better musician in the end.
You forgot the Band : Okay let's stop for a moment and talk about how to improve the song Guitar Player : "starts playing something" Band : STOP! Guitar Player : Okay, okay.... Band: "starts talking" Guitar Player : "plays some shit on full volume again" GAAAAAAAAH
that is exactly what my fucking little brother does we stop playing and i start talking about the song(i play bass) and next minute this cock head starts playing the fucking song while im talking 😐
+BeJomon Guilty. But I was previously in a band that cared more about cigarette breaks and only playing to look cool. So I moved to being a solo artist. :/.
As an audio engineer, i hear a lot of people say things like "just fix it in post" or "Just loop it" If you say that in studio, EVER, i will throw a 57 at you (They never break, its quite aerodynamically efficient too). Did that to the lead guitarist in a metal band I recorded the other week. Your job is to play the music right, our job is to capture it. That said, anyone want anything mixed?
heheh..."just fix it in post" means you shouldn't be in a studio in the first place...I've done it myself doing home recordings...but as its just hobbyist stuff it doesn't matter...
@Elliot Sharpe There is really no good point to looping. It's about as much use as Autotune. It just gives people who have no business being in the music industry, the means to create a mathematically perfect song. If you can't play the song on demand, why are you trying to record it?! Save yourself a lot of time and money and practice first
GamesOffNermal MetalBassist They're just creative in a different way. I get my best ideas while playing alone, they hear something and give their own interpretation simultaneously.
You again XD. You're definitely right! I love my Floyd Rose (we have the same guitar, I once commented it on one of your videos, it's an Ibanez GRG 250DX.) BUT the big problem is tuning the guitar... it's SO annoying. But you can do cool things with it and if it IS in tone, it STAYS very long. I think you can agree with me... but if I ever buy another guitar, I'd buy one without a floyd rose tremolo, so I play songs that are written in Drop C or whatever actually in Drop C XD.
+Me Li Personally, I love my FR Bridges; But I never liked the ones Ibanez puts on their guitars, I usually change them for a an OFR, Schaller licensed one or a Gotoh FR (mostly depending on the price class of the guitar) as long as it is the classic high-profile kind. A quality one is setup fast and the same goes for tuning it, but you are out of luck if you want to ever change the tuning. The only thing you can do is use something like an EVH D-Tuna but it requires to lock the FR in one direction.
James Steele What do you exactly mean by that? I mean... if I'm palm muting, my hand is on the strings and If I play "normal" chords or stuff like that, then my hand does Not touch the strings. So I would say no? But as I said, I don't know what you mean....
I laughed because I totally also make weird grunting and farting noises when I mess up, I thought that was a me thing...the singer makes fun of me for it :(
Haha, watching this, it seems like our guitarist is a bit unique. Quotes from him while we recorded our CD include; "Turn the rhythm guitar down, the orchestra is much more important." "We don't really need that lead part in there, turn the first violin up instead." And; "Bloody hell, have you heard that Lidls do caviar?"
you missed out "Can you tune it for me, I'm not good at that"... I've been playing with a guy for 12 years who, although brilliant, still can't tune up!
Why should i hate it? Allright, first it took about an hour to change strings, but now it's not a hard thing. And it's just simply can't get out of tune.
Dániel Horváth tbh floyd rose licensed bridges are pretty lame. if you do any whammying they go slightly but noticeably out of tune. I have one on a well loved schecter unfortunately :(
Depends how you whammy. a tiny bit of flattening the notes with neat delay/chorus/tremelo pedals can spice up a lot of stuff. Kinda like tapping and sweeping; good in moderation. But regardless, having a system that says you can whammy and stay in tune and not being able to stay in tune is fucking lame. And to say just don't do it at all because the system is that bad is pretty dumb.
the reason why lots of people hate floyd rose bridges and tremolos is because their a pain in the ass to set up and because theres alot more possible tuning and string breaking problems but once you have them set up their just awesome!! There really good for fast metal and melodic players plus you can always block the tremolo springs in the back so that its more like a les paul and when you pull a string the tremolo always stays leveled so that the other strings dont tune out.
As an guitarist (well my job is to play guitar so I think i can call myself that way) I find it sooooo amusing and funny! Cause those are things I used to say and probably I still say some of them xD That was sweet bro! Full dope! Keep good work, I'm waiting for more! Cheers from Poland.
About 4 years ago, a buddy of mine (he was apprenticing with an audio engineer) had me in the studio recording so he could learn metal. I accidentally ended up writing a song in a 3/4 without realizing it. With the metronome playing i just couldn't get it on a whim the engineer said to try recording without the click. I did and nailed. He said in 33 years that was the first time he saw someone play better legitimately without a metronome.
+Kanshi Talon He went to Musician's Institute for I think two years before joining the band. Plus his dad is a pretty prolific guitarist and he's learnt a lot of blues, jazz and country style from him growing up. I know a lot of really good guitarists including the guys from CHON, Polyphia, Aaron Marshall from Intervals, Tosin, Plini, Owane, Petrucci and while Syn's style differs from them, he's arguably the best in his genre. Progressive and djent and what people are now calling djazz is very different from heavy metal scene musically but Syn really is a versatile, humble and open minded guitarist. He's even gotten into the big band, gypsy jazz style of playing which is very eyebrow raising for someone in his genre
I have never been able to hold a steady rythem, even after 5 years of playing guitar ... I lost it at "What's a metronome." So true. Edit: After watching the rest of the video, I can say that this is the most relatable video I have ever seen on youtube.

"What's a metronome."
I have not words for how true this is.
Cory Andrews It's even better when it's followed by "Yeah I've been playing, for about 8 years"
***** Why is it always exactly 8 years?
Because they started when they were ten.
+Cory Andrews they started at 5
+Cory Andrews My drummer hasn't a clue what one is either
There's nothing more awkward than when someone playing guitar just makes direct eye contact without saying anything while they play.
My friend used to do that when he played drums, soo creepy. lol
+Cameron Fischer Lol i did that when i had stage fright :D it was something beautiful.
+Cameron Fischer Lol, love doing that to people.. It's even better when it looks like you're flipping them off.
+Cameron Fischer I love doing that
lol i do that a lot just because i know they feel like this too
"What's a metronome?" lol
***** You don't learn songs with one, you practice with one. There is much more to learning the guitar than learning songs.
It's all about technique man. Be tight and develop your own style.

+Josh Kelley Good choice! I would have done the same in that situation.
+Josh Kelley Or found a different band.
You forgot the half hour segment about them talking shit about the bass player.
I'm a guitarist and I can 100 percent confirm that this is true
I'm a bassist and I can 100 percent confirm that this is true
I am a Vocalist and I can 100% confirm that this is true
Im a keyboardist and i can 100 percent confirm that this is true

Seriously though, what is a Metro Gnome? I hear about them a lot; are they like studio helpers?
chazzy licks Do i plug it straight into the guitar?
chazzy licks you're
Jake Bowley Give me my sides back
A metro gnome is a small guy that hangs out in the city
That's a nice one))))))))
What's a metronome.
I actually heard some really good guys saying that
Omfg
That's the tippy tappy thing, right?
Yes
+Logan Bills I know, I was just kidding
lars...
"anyway here's Wonderwall"
said 90% of British guitar players these days.
Lmao I learned wonderwall for the sole purpose of impressing chicks, not gonna lie
+A Pokemon runescape that's the reason why people learn to play it
A Pokemon runescape did it work?
"Yeah, Steve Vai is good but have u heard of Slash?"
I'm choking x°D
That one cracked me up
+Frank Ravin Different but both great.
Why not Joe Satriani?
+Royale With Cheese Same
have you heard of Steve Howe?
How many guitar players u need to change a lightbulb?
3 - one is changing it and 2 say they can do it as well ;)
You need 2: 1 is changing it and the other is playing the solo
Music is win
I found out why bassists never write the songs. They play a riff, guitarists play another one and say "That's your riff, I just made it better".
+Bass Lightyeah This is something I can relate to on a spiritual level.
GamesOffNermal MetalBassist They're just creative in a different way. I get my best ideas while playing alone, they hear something and give their own interpretation simultaneously.
+Bass Lightyeah bass is just as important as guitar
GamesOffNermal MetalBassist True.
in fact its even more important because it underlines the guitar riffs while locking in with the drums 2 important things at once
"I want a Floyd Rose, so bad."
"I can't stand Floyd Rose bridges."
The Bi-polar Guitarist.
It's been like 8 minutes and I just realized that I have the TH-cam automatic looper on
"Just loop it, I'll get it eventually"
Castlemaster712 GOD DAMMIT
That high

I do that aswell 😂😂
Same tho but its been a while since I've played with my band so they dont make fun of me for making noises
Frank Da Tank I started just angrily playing the chord multiple times instead of trying to pick it right
"steve vai is good, but have you heard slash?" my friend say that and I almost killed him
"Can you scoop the mids?" - dies - 😂😂
I don't get it 😁
Daniel Scarlett you wont
"I want to throw in some pinch harmonics".
Sounds like every ZZ Top solo.
Agreed, but still love them! :D
but can he play "smoke on the water"?
See? Those are your tears, man.
No one can play the ultimate sacred guitar riff. Not even Steve Vai, or Eric Clapton.
No that’s too hard
I hear that when you play smoke on the water it is so hard that you body turns in to flames and you blow up in to a million pieces.

+Die Gaming Buletten I know it's considered heresy among a lot of people, but I love A7X (sue me)
Avenged can shred TBH. Syn is crazy and he still makes it sound great
Trevor Stockton yep
Yeah, but ATTILA SUCKS
"A7X Shreds!" "Slayer Shreds!" "Lamb of God Shreds!" "Attila sucks..." xD dying
Matthew Smith but he's damn right about Attila
@@davidgarcia6796 I like Attila
I only do 10% of the stuff here. But on a serious note, we all forget to bring tuners sometimes.
Pun intended?
+Mercer Go home, Dad.
+Christopher Abeja except drummings, we never forget our tuners ;)
+Christopher Abeja i never forget my tuner...typical guitarist making excuses. thats like a surgeon forgetting his scalpel....
+Christopher Abeja I just have one permanently velcroed to my pedal board so I have one at any gig or recording session I play at.

loquayrocks Who tuned this? Was it me? I think it was me.
Chuck Berry is infamous for not being able to tune his guitar. He's still one of the most influential guitar players of all time.
dude....even guys who love floyd rose bridges hate them. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you don't own a floyd rose.
Ibanez tremelo systems are infinitely better.

and you swallow
Hank Hill Yep. That shit lingers for hours. Get the Listerine XD
That grammar thou. And yeah, go listen to metallica for the rest of your life, because they don't do 0-0-0-0, right?... So interesting riffs...
DxArmyMember001
implying that people hate Attila just because they can't play guitar
Sweeping is for brooms and women.

Dude its a joke. Like you sweep with brooms and women stereo-typically sweep the floors.
Haha get it?! Because they both sweep the floors in a house?!!! HAHAH!!! Seriously though, good joke
WTF?? Not funny

DID HE SAY AVENGED SEVENFOLD?! OMG FINALLY!
The 20 seconds of pure sound effects had me lol
I actually like Avenged Sevenfold though. ;~;
Yes, but since they're pretty big, they are obviously going to get a bunch hate. Anyways, listen to whatever you like, fuck what other people say. :)
jr4chargers
Exactly! Quote by M. Shadows, the lead singer for A7x: "Be yourself and like what you like. Fuck everyone else."
jr4chargers But no JB right?
elitebelt JB?
jr4chargers Justin Bieber
1:38 literaly me every fucking jam session

Thrash metal is terrible so is slayer

+AllOutWar5000and1 it's a song buy them and the name of his amp

its just a prank

Yeah, I got that, it's just the notes in between are focking with me...
Should be, "Things that shitty core guitarists say in the studio"
Definitely not a hate comment, I like the video.
More like capitalizing on the talk of crunchy guitars and breakdowns.
2:59 this is actually me trying to play pinch harmonics lmao
2:43 Thumbs Up if your a RUSH Fan \m/
benserv02 passage to Bangkok is the best song they made ever😁😁😁😁
2:31 so many story's at practice
"Avenged Sevenfold shreds." FUCK YEAH THEY DO!!
+Zwyni Savageau I AGREE WITH THIS MAN!
Not only that but Syn studied Jazz in college! He's not just a shredder with no soul. R.I.P. The REV :'(
Syn Gates went to a music school, basically
+Kanshi Talon He went to Musician's Institute for I think two years before joining the band. AGREED. I got so excited when he said that

That "riff" he made sounds like a slowed down version of Duality
"Can you just copy and paste that one so I don't have to track it again?" Everyday...
I have never been able to hold a steady rythem, even after 5 years of playing guitar ... I lost it at "What's a metronome." So true.

"Can you scoop the mids?"
"There's no clarity in this!"
Producer woes
I have a Floyd rose on one of my guitars and I almost never have to tune it
never have to tune it but when you want to change your strings tuning, it becomes a nightmare
simpletown323 I still have no problem when I change my strings
i meant when you want to go from standard e tuning to dropped d or something. all the strings go out of tune
Some people don't change their tuning every song.
If you do, then you don't need a Floyd.
Or for drop D you can get a D-tuna.
For drop C, you need to change the strings gauges anyway.
"You recorded the drum part wrong. Now my guitar riff doesn't fit." freaking hilarious

I think this should clarify. "Things METAL guitarists say"
Lost it at 3:32 :DD That face expression totally nailed it :D!
That tuning though at the end.....
"Can you just scoop the mids i want a really beefy tone"
"There's no clarity in this tone"
7 strings are cool, but they dont DJENT like a 8 string hahahhaha that was straight up fuckin hilarious! nice video dude
I would love to see his reaction to a 12 string
Jared Dines you were the one who made me laugh after a long long time... damn, thanks indeed, you're a master in guitar and sense of humor... love you.
it sounds so Much better live
Dude, you are my hero for making these videos.
Good god, I was praying to god that I wasn't guilty of any of this and i'm glad to say that I'm 101% guilt free from all of this scrub lord-ism.

I also say "Dammit" a lot when I am learning a new song and I f/k it up.
The fact that this was me in the studio back in high school made my throat close up
Have you heard of Demetori?
"i've been working on this riff for a while", his face is flawless when he does that "riff"
"Check out this pedal"
"i've never been able to hear the other guitar player, but he's definitely playing that wrong". vittoria.
Avenged Sevenfold and Slayer do shred tho..
«I´ve been working in this riff for a while, check it out» that face was gold.
Is it bad that some of these are really me?
me 2 man lets get past this together its embarassing
nead mich yeah i feel kinda bad bro lol
"i wanna throw in a few pinch harmonics"
something rob scallon would say
me to myself in my bedroom
I've never heard any of these phrases. Except the one I always say whenever i'm not home and have a guitar"Do you have a pick?". I always forget a pick. Lol.

I love Avenged Sevenfold!!
Me too!
Is there some tutorial how to do this 3:15?
3:26 Totally Ripping Off Paper Cuts By Nirvana xP
hahahaha "here you try it"
I do like Avenged Sevenfold, though.
Me too!
Same
That was so accurate. Between all of the guitarists I know, I have heard almost everything in this video.
A7X IS AWESOME
I agree! Synyster gates is my Idol!
It's good to know I'm not the only one who makes awkward noises at their guitar when they mess up :)
Sadly, I have said many of these things lol
Bassistking Don't feel bad,I have too ;)
working a year on this riff for awhile had me in stitches laughing
0:58 I have a friend who said exactly that
i heard a couple good ones yesterday
"dude, i heard this SICK guitarist, his names YING-WAY MAM-STEEN"
"idk, i can do sweep picking, but whats arps?"
and "tremolo picking is that super fast shit right?"
2:43 That's me.
I've started out playing bass but I recently started taking guitar and the kid that sits behind me is literally this guy.
2:56- me pinching
+StuntMuffin01 Pinching is easy xD I somehow learned it by accident, by myself and without guides/videos etc. I don't know why some ppl find it hard.
Minato Arisato Im just an idiot, believe me. I can do it but it doesn't sound great, its passable but certainly not zach wilde
StuntMuffin01 You mean Zakk Wylde? And yeah, my pinching is not at the Dimebag level or anything but I think it sounds good.
Minato Arisato Yeah, not a huge fan of his style (thats why I don't know how to spell the mans name)
As a guitarist, I have said half of these things XD you gained my subscription!
