    In Adam Savage's final stop on his tour through the Museum of Modern Art's new exhibition showcasing the making of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, he examines the construction and anatomy of the stop-motion animation puppets created for the film. The detail of these figures extends beneath their surface to the intricately machined mechanics of their movement.

    The love, dedication, talent, time, and my god any other words can't begin to describe what goes into stop motion. It is an art like no other, that leaves you in just incredible awe at the sheer scope of something as simple as talking. Then you get lost in the magical rabbit hole of how they do something as simple as water!? The appreciation I have for everyone that works in stop motion is immense!

    Adam, I've been watching you since I was a child.
    Now I'm almost 40, and I've tried almost every one of my crafty dreams, and I have to thank you for giving my that extra dose of curiosity and willingness to fail until I succeed.
    So thank you very much Adam, without your input, my life would have been much worse and cookiecutter boring.
    You're awesome and appreciated by generations of humes.

    A correction: the Pinocchio replacement faceplates were not in fact individually hand painted. They were colour 3D printed in resin without any practical paint application added later, it all came out the printer like you see.
    The metal bodies were hand painted, but not the face plates.

    • @jamesharvey805
      @jamesharvey805 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LeonardoMastrogiovanni well true, but you don't have to individually, digitally paint every single one. You just paint a single flat texture and then wrap it around every face variation. The flat texture distorts appropriately based on the object mesh. Somewhat different from painting them all uniquely.

    • @jamesharvey805
      @jamesharvey805 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@LeonardoMastrogiovanniI'm not denying that a digital texture painter didn't have to put a lot of work into painting the faces in the computer, just that in terms of workload it isn't comparable to the time and stamina it would take manually hand painting thousands of faceplates with a physical brush, as Adam apparently misunderstood to be the process in the video. Hand painting the replacement faces is a process which has been done before on other stop-motion features so I do forgive the mistake, but feel it was worth correcting here for the sake of accuracy.

    When I was a cabinet maker I worked for a while with a really old dude, who'd been doing wood work for like almost 60 years, and I'm telling you, his hands looked exactly like that. They looked like if walnuts grew in bunches like grapes.

    The Pinnochio faces were actually printed with all the color, and weren't handpainted after, at least that's what a making-of article said.

    Perfectly unnatural. Pizza boxes are square. Which leaves me to wonder. Did they order the boxes and somebody decided to get the pizza box printing done on those or did they find rectangular pizza boxes? While I have never seen a rectangular pizza in the wild I have no doubt there is a pizza joint out there doing it and box manufacturers will make any kind of box you want.

    • @ericajackson6662
      @ericajackson6662 ปีที่แล้ว

      They probably just searched for a company that would make pizza boxes in the size they needed. Especially as the US does wacky things with pizza.
      Given the generic graphic on the boxes, it was cheaper to order as-is. Especially as it didn't mess with their labeling system.

    • @Rembrant65
      @Rembrant65 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericajackson6662 If I need a shallow square box a pizza box is an economical option. If I need a shallow rectangular box a pizza box isn't an option because off the shelf pizza boxes are square. The "pizza" boxes in the video have 10 columns and 7 rows 1.3:1 Guestimate on the size 18" by 12"? Uline has S-11231 18X12X2" white literature mailer looks like a good fit for the need. Bundle of 25 is $2.68 each. Uline also has S-17594 which is a 16" plain pizza box. It's square and 2" deep and a bundle of 50 is $55 or $1.10 each. The realities of sourcing contradict the narrative of the "pizza" boxes in the museum display.

    • @ericajackson6662
      @ericajackson6662 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rembrant65 Sounds like you already found the company they used. So the main obstacle would have been availability for where they were at.
      (Also I presuming the US. For all I know, the pizza boxes were bought outside the US.)
      Even if they couldn't get their preferred sized, I imagine they would've adjusted the system to work with they could get. (And for all we know, they didn't.)

    • @Rembrant65
      @Rembrant65 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericajackson6662 I am failing to make my point. I think they had those boxes custom made to the size they needed with the dividers and some one with a sense of humor had them made with pizza box graphics even though they were never intended to hold pizza. The jokes at 2:10 are playing off of the pizza boxes that I don't think are honest pizza boxes. Just a theory though.

    • @ericajackson6662
      @ericajackson6662 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rembrant65 Oh they are definitely pizza boxes. There's a specific way pizza boxes are made so one can easily fold the cardboard into a box. I've folded a bunch for my job, so I know these are the real deal.
      Plus the two half moon cut-outs on the bottom edge of each display is a sign the boxes are pizza boxes.
      (Plus the curator confirms what the boxes are at the beginning.)
      But I can definitely see these being a custom order for the production, and the strip inserts being made onsite.
