I am so glad to see that Go Go hasn't lost its vibe in DC! No other place on the planet has this music, so y'all need to keep it alive! RIP the legend Chuck Brown.
I'm an Afro-Cuban trained percussionist with conga as a main axe. I was not familiar with this style of conga playing & at first didn't know what to make of it. I was thinking, "they playin' conga but are they conga players?" Looking into GoGo I was amazed to learn about this music tradition of conga style & really started getting into to it. It would be great to see some Afro-Cuban & GoGo style sharing groove. This is a wonderful Irie culture & shows me I always got something to learn! Peace!
The tumbao is similar to the "pocket" in gogo conga playing. Its kind of like the basis for all this. The rhythm is slightly different but the melody os the same if that makes sense.
Haha, I play Latin style congas, part of my heritage is Cuban, and I will honestly say that anyone criticizing gogo conga players on this or that, just do what they do on the congas, and then we can talk. I support you brothers all the way. I've been a gogo fan since the 80's, and what you do is unique, beautiful, it's raw, and it's untouchable. You've taken the congas and brought a whole new way to play them, thank you. Most congueros don't play well to funk because it's hard, so amen to you.
OH by the way, for all the You Tubers this is DC GO-GO and the beat is GO-GO this is an ORIGINAL MUSIC ART form created by us for us! This was not meant to sound like latin congas being played, it was meant to sound original! So once again our people have created another genre of music.
Why is everybody trying to compare latin drumming with go-go, I'm a Latino,(Puerto Rican) mainstream latin percussionist, (bongos, Congas, timbales, drums) andhave played with some of the best but also I was born & raised in DC & played with latin, latin jazz, funk, ang go-go groups back in the 70's, I even recorded with Leroy Flemming of the Soulsearchers when they separated for a short minute from Chuck Brown, you can't compare Latin, Brazilian, African, Hatian, etc drumming to eachother, their different worlds but the one thing they all have in common is Congas and go-go Conga playing has a beat all to it's own, that's what music is all about, improvising an always evolving, just like blues evolved into jazz, rock, bebop, big band, fusion and so on, it's innovation, so it's all good people, peace ! DC homeboy now in Miami, but always a diehard Redskin fan !!!!!
I do not know why people are comparing Go-Go Congo players to Latin as if Latino players are better Go-Go comes from Funk and Jazz if you don't believe me listen to any Chuck Brown album. Latinos did not invent the congos they just created their own style of playing to their Native sound in their country or city the same as in D.C this is our Native sound and it comes from African drumming connected with Funk and Jazz do your History
Timothy Bias LOL what are you talking about! Latino playres are way better then this, come on ! Look at the diversity of rhythm and styles from Cuba alone and the rest of the caribbean and brazil . any good latino players can learn and adapt to this style easily !! . But can these guys do the same for latin and afrocuban music ? I DONT THINK SO . it would take a lot of years to undo their bad technique that clearly shown in this video .

A great day for the DC "uhhrea". I'm proud to say I was there. The Smoke vs. Pooh final was epic. As a lover of all Black music across the diaspora, and definitely that of Cuba, I'm sad to see a few latin percussionists hating here. But fortunately, there are more latin cats showing love. There are different vocabularies all united under the language of groove. Mambo, rumba, guaguanco, bomba, plena, and yes... GO-GO. Life is rhythm, we all dance.

Black American music and styles are at the top of th pile. African Americans have invented blues, rock n roll, RnB, country, gogo, funk, soul, house, even techno, Hip Hop lets not even talk about Jimmy
One of the reasons im such an avid gogo fan is because latin conga players dont do it the way gogo conga players do. Gogo conga players use the full spectrum of high and low tunes on top of pocket grooves to create a nice up and down flow.
Now THIS sounds like old school. REAL go-go. Until they opened the high hat. Everybody on here is killin it but I think the first guy is the one is the best. The best smack, best pocket smack and he's super CLEAN!!
I love all styles of percussion and can appreciate the skill it takes to play the instrument. Most of the melodies come from american jazz and rythym and blues, but groups like E.U. even incorporated metal guitars into their go-go grooves. Chuck Brown brought "big band" and symphonic melodies in also. Go go is a black thing, but its also a latin thing. It's multicultural.

BEFORE YOU PRESS PLAY, dear one, read on... ... be warned and proceed with caution, for you are about to graphically witness the first percussive enema ever filmed, THEN wiped onto TH-cam to mentally injure pure-in-heart, unsuspecting, funky, righteous, true hand drummers. whether or not intentions were malevolent in nature has yet to be determined.
Yes, because a showcase highlighting one particular facet of gogo is an all-encompassing narrative on how all congas are played in gogo, AMIRITE? Dumbass. Funny how GO GO Mickey Freeman is endorsed by LATIN PERCUSSION, isn't it?
Man y'all need to put another one out there like yesterday! You can tell they can't wait for the next one!!!! Besides, this is real entertainment and I wish I was there when it all went down!
As a Puerto Rican I grew up on rock n roll (classic rock and some r&b) and was never really a fan of salsa musiic. Latin jazz however I do like. They use all different types of drum tones and their solos of any instrument have more fire to them. I would love to see this type of contest done with different beats as well as the one being played. Everyone there was talented. They all have my respect!!!
If y'all learn this craft you guys are going to Funked the game up...Jeesh!! Afro Cuban playing Gogo wow...please do take this style of playing off the charts my man!
It is just different from those who are used to latin style conga percussion. Latin percussion include many rudiments, slaps, accents. I enjoyed it though.

... be warned and proceed with caution, for you are about to graphically witness the first percussive enema ever filmed, THEN wiped onto TH-cam to mentally injure pure-in-heart, unsuspecting, funky, righteous, true hand drummers. whether or not intentions were malevolent in nature has yet to be determined.
Yes, because a showcase highlighting one particular facet of gogo is an all-encompassing narrative on how all congas are played in gogo, AMIRITE? Dumbass. Funny how GO GO Mickey Freeman is endorsed by LATIN PERCUSSION, isn't it?
Kragz Lizt Silly little Kragz List wouldn't know good drumming if it smacked his own skin.
Seemless transitions. Good look !
Super Dave was turnt up! I think he should've gotten something!! But it had to be hard to judge that because they all did good!
I'm no GoGo fan, but THIS right here...THIS right here...is the hotness!!!

Excellent mix!
Beautiful show of love respect and showmanship.
Man they are killing it on here. Goodness. Missing home.
Man y'all need to put another one out there like yesterday! You can tell they can't wait for the next one!!!! Besides, this is real entertainment and I wish I was there when it all went down!

I’m one of Hip Hop’s first generation from New York and Go Go with drum beats rank with best Sounds I’ve heard
When and Where is the 2014 or 2015 competition. ..I'm from Trinidad and Tobago here in the Caribbean and want to enter
All of them were great! Bro at 9:02 creative with it! Did the snake on them.
Living out in California now, i really miss this !!!
How can you even pick a winner, they all were roccin💯
My man rocking the mask takes me back to the little Benny crew playing with Chuck
Great upload!
I'm loving it!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting my Go Go fix in MI. Lost art
I didn’t know there was a King of the Congas competition!!! 🪘🪘
That was dope!!! Hands down hot. Keep coin ya thing and hope the battles continue!
Does the King Of Congas Battle still exist? If so when & where? I definitely want to go and check them out.
Your killing it
This reminds me so much of Babatunde Olatunji, the legendary Nigerian percussionist.
It shouldn’t
Can anyone explain how the conga playing in GOGO differs from the conga playing in Salsa music?
It's really just the swing of the drum beat
If y'all learn this craft you guys are going to Funked the game up...Jeesh!! Afro Cuban playing Gogo wow...please do take this style of playing off the charts my man!
"If you don't get it, it's not for you." Stop criticizing. Go enjoy the music YOU like!
anyone on here criticizing the playing technique and style....just doesn't get Go-Go!
Exacty! long as that shit crank, you doin it right!
Basically.
It is just different from those who are used to latin style conga percussion. Latin percussion include many rudiments, slaps, accents. I enjoyed it though.
Ruben Mendoza what do you mean Latin? Congos and these rhythms came from Africa!
Agreed.
This was a DMV thing most of you would not understand.
What are the rules for playing there all that's good stuff too by the way
