Managed to build my own star analyzer with a clear 1.25" filter cell and one of the lil rainbow symphony diffraction gratings! Hoping to point it at Vega to try it out, but it works on terrestrial light sources
I did try with the student's diffraction grating that you showed in the beginning with by 127 mm refractor and ASI 294MC pro colour camera on Sirius and did get a spectrum in RSpec. Still a lot of refining to be done.
Started looking into this a couple of months ago, had no idea you could do this being into amatuer astro imaging. Definitely want to try it out this year.

Thank you thank you! I do all of the non-deep sky stuff from within the metroplex yes. Normally just this tiny park a few minutes from my apt. And yeah! I'm pretty green though. Only ~15 dives in. I got my open water cert at scuba ranch, but haven't been back since. May go back for dry suit training tho.
had a look at it, would never recommend just a ND filter at the front of a scope...doesn't do anything for IR...a ERF is mandatory. Also, be very cautious with using oil filled element refractors - heat build up and cool down will fuck the scope.
