      I think it's important to identify what it is that a microphone (or any piece of gear) isn't doing for you, or what can be improved. And if you can't identify specific things, then you probably don't need to upgrade

    As a non-professional audio person, I prefer the Shure MV7 because I do not have an acoustically treated room, and I am not planning to do much of that. A dynamic mic works the best for my kind of use case.

    Great review! I've been using a Blue Yeti for about a year now and have no real issues with it - overall a solid and dependable USB mic. The main problem is a less-than-deal recording space (which can be somewhat overcome through recording software) but I was surprised at how close these two mics were in sound quality. I had been looking at a Shure mic as the next step up (SM7B is out of my price range) and the MV7 seems like a great next mic but, to your credit, this review has really highlighted that this isn't hugely necessary just yet!

    • @PhillipRPeck

    Great review! I just recently bought a Shure MV7 after having the Blue Yeti for 4+ years, that mic would pick up everything and constantly having popping/fizzing static noises, it’s cable port also became loose so the cable would always fall out, if I plugged earphones in then it made these beeping noises, the tone sounds harsher and all over the place but now with the MV7 it sounds so sharp and smooth with hardly any background noise, works perfectly with PS4! I love the MOTIV app too so you can lock any custom setting on it before using it on other devices. I still love both mics though as I can take advantage of using the condenser and dynamic for different things :) I have heard that using an SM7B windscreen on the MV7 also helps a lot! Glad I bought that windscreen too as it would stop any potential explosive noises.

  • @otovean4540
    @otovean4540 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This was really helpful. What I had noticed from the MV7 compared to the Blue Yeti would have to have been how it picked up the surrounding sounds. The Blue Yeti had picked up surrounding sounds such as his hands when they clap together, mind you not very loudly, and the shock from hitting the desk while recording. Not only that but the Yeti also picks up keyboard sounds and a lot of surrounding sounds compared to the MV7. The MV7 sounds slightly muffled and a little bit more deafened compared to the Blue Yeti, but it doesn't pick up as many ambient sounds or surrounding sounds as it focuses more on vocals. If you plug the MV7 through its XLR Cable into an audio interface, I believe the sound quality will become a lot better compared to the blue yet in terms of their vocals. On a side note, the Yeti sounds deeper compared to the MV7.
    In conclusion, I believe for those wanting a good quality mic but don't want to spend too much money, they should purchase the Yeti for podcasts as well as video recording but not singing or production. For those who want to sing or produce music as well as podcast professionally, and don't have the budget for the SM7B at the moment, should definition buy the MV7 as it is a great budget XLR mic.

    Thanks for the great review. One thing that is making me consider upgrading to the MV7 from the Yeti is the voice isolation and lower sensitivity. With my Yeti I pick up more background noise (traffic, PC fans, room noise) than I'd like. Your recording room seems to be well-controlled, so I wonder whether the advantages of the MV7 don't shine as much as they might in a noisier space.

    I'll post this in every video I hear this until I die :
    Dynamic Mics behave exactly like condenser mics if they have the same polar pattern. The unwanted room sounds don't get acousticaly quiter when they reach dynamic mics vs condensers. The mic doesn't know if it's coming from afar or not, and doesn't discriminate low volume sounds, because it's supposed to convert acoustic sound into electricity in an ANALOG way, so identical in relative terms for every part of the signal, so there's no expander effect either in dyn mics.
    The misconception comes from the fact that those mics are low sensitivity and don't sound as harsh when very close so people get closer, speak louder to compensate for the low output volume. So you don't have to put as much gain as if you were speaking normally at a nominal distance. So of course there's not as much gain on the distant sounds (and btw since you're closer to the mic, they're relatively that much further away from the mic, see the inverse square root law).
    This misconception is just a byproduct of how people use the mic because of its limits, not of the technology itself. You can get the exact same result with a condenser but you'll be able to apply 25 to 35dB less gain and you'll remove that much in EMIs and hiss.

  • @CuriosityVaultChannel
    @CuriosityVaultChannel ปีที่แล้ว

    Hiya - Question - I have been using the Yeti for my YT channel for almost 2 years; good mic, I have realised I actually have a slight room reverb, I didn't know anything when I started. So Research has lead me to looking at MV7 because I don't have a treated room, and need USB. You mention its rather sensitive for a Dynamic mic, would you still recommend it to me? My room isn't echoing, its not really too bad, but it could be better so if I can improve it, I want to. Also, mouth sounds as a side issue are also a battle which I clean up with software etc, but I would think a dynamic like MV7 would pick up less mouth sounds than Yeti by way of being less sensitive?

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could help with reverb because you're generally going to need to be a bit closer to the MV7 than the Yeti, but you could try just getting a bit closer to the Yeti and turning down the gain so it isolates your voice a bit better. If that's possible.
      The MV7 will definitely be less sensitive to mouth sounds, but it is pretty susceptible to plosives so you have to be careful there. Lot's of people pick up the SM7B windscreen for the MV7, which helps a lot.
      A little reverb isn't a big deal, it helps your recording sound more natural. But if it's a big, echoey room, then yeah, could be distracting. You could add some rugs, hang some stuff on the walls, etc. Breaking up and absorbing sound waves with everyday objects helps a lot, too

    I feel like this is a better comparison than comparing the MV7 to the SM7B. To me the MV7 is hitting the same people buying the Blue Yeti or the Rode PodMic. I just feel like the price point for the MV7 is too high for hitting the same market as those two ~$100 microphones.

    Nice comparison Phillip, I've had the Yeti for a couple of years but I find it picks up too much background sounds when Im live streaming, I will definitely go get the Shure MV7 as I think this should solve my issues, I was interested in the SM7B but the cost of the Mic plus the need for the XLR amp made it way to expensive..

      Thank you Able2Fish...you will definitely notice the difference b/n the MV7 and the Yeti. Not sure if you have a boom arm, but getting the mic off the desk (whether it's the Yeti or the MV7) will help in reducing keyboard and mouse clicks, etc. The MV7 is a great mic and definitely provides a lot of the performance of the SM7B for a lot less money--and a lot less complicated to set up. Good luck!

Tell me is it possible? Do you know?

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I'm really not sure if that setup would work to be honest. I think the Yeti and other similar USB microphones need driver software to interface correctly with the computer and therefore I don't know what would happen if you just plugged one into a camera via a 3.5" cable. Could be worth a shot but it might be easier just to get an on-camera video microphone and run a long 3.5" cable to it. Something like the Rode Videomic NTG
