Lesson 3 - Mask Ventilation: MICU Fellows Airway Course

  • Rodney Dangerfield made a career and a fortune bemoaning his fate. "I don't get no respect!" He'd grab his signature red tie, pull the knot back and forth, and roll those exophthalmic eyes of his (did he ever get his thyroid function tested?).
Mask ventilation falls into the "I don't get no respect" category. The fame and glory is all in the intubation, and most airway students want to checker jump over the mask ventilation part and get right to the "cool stuff", the laryngoscopy.
    Hold your horses!
Mask ventilation is the crucial "walk before you run" part of airway management, and you have to get this down pat. Mask ventilation buys you time, stabilizes the patient, in many cases SAVES the patient, and is the ultimate "fall back" if other airway maneuvers have failed. Plus, masking well sets you up for success in your laryngoscopy, as you will see below.

Although I never had the good fortune of having you as my teacher in person, thanks to the internet and TH-cam, I've learnt so much from you Sir!
My respect, gratitude and good wishes will be with you for life!
In India, where many will ridicule you for your ignorance and very few will come forward to hold your hand and guide you when you reach out for help, you are Godsend.
From literally trying to hide in the toilet when called upon to intubate a dying patient, I now look forward to being able to help someone ASAP.
I always try to volunteer to intubate FIRST!
And the credit for this metamorphosis goes to you and a few other dedicated, knowledgeable and good human beings like you
Thank you for all that you do and God bless you with good health and immortality. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

great tips, but here's one more - get help, especially if the team doesn't have a plethora of experienced mask ventilators. One person holds the mask, 2nd person bags.

Yes you need to connect to oxygen. In a severe emergency, you can mask with room air, better than nothing!

But what if we have really small hands and we are in emergency all alone.. how can we improve mask ventilate with single hands?

Hi Sir. That device looks cool. So it no longer has to be connected to an oxygen tank right? We simply have to squeeze the bag manually to pump oxygen into our patient?

You are WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! In my hospital in Romania, our doctors don't teach us very good these things...because moatly they are fed up...But we need to learn too! I mean we are the future doctors! ( I'm talking about med.residents - I'm one of them too, at the Emergency). You've been so helpful. Because you know how to explain nicely! I love all of your videos! God bless you sir!
