    I have to say thank you because twice this video has saved me. Mine gets stuck a lot and when it comes to bobbin threading; it's sorta annoying. Once again, I had to come back here to make sure I took it apart and put it back correctly. I love being able to fix my machine myself and with videos like yours, it's always possible. 5 years later and this video is still perfect.

    I'm writing this in case it is of some help to others who have the same issue I did, which is that I couldn't release my bobbin winder clutch wheel on a second-hand Kenmore Ultra-Stitch 10 (158.1340). I watched this video because I thought I might have to disassemble the whole clutch, but I couldn't even get the knob off to start the process. Seems this is a common issue as my search showed lots of people asking about stuck clutches but no solutions given. So I did what humans have done for millenia when faced with a misbehaving machine: I hit it. Percussive maintenance won the day once again. I placed a scrap of wood flat against the knob and hit it sharply in the center with a hammer. You can use a wooden mallet if you have one. I didn't hit it hard enough to move the machine, just a sharp rap. The wheel freed up and I wound my bobbin. As a bonus, I was able to pull off the knob as well.

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea using the block of wood. Where folks get in trouble is striking metal with metal. Something usually breaks.
      You’re the smart one. Using logic and letting the wood absorb the shock while giving the wheel a nudge.
      Good work.

I have a sweet Kenmore 158 that I’m cleaning & oiling & gently familiarizing myself with - one of the things I’ve noticed is that when I release the clutch to wind the bobbin - the wheel and needle keeps turning as I run bobbin winder - now I know to go check that clutch position!...

      Randy Your Sewing Machine Man I just picked up a Sears Kenmore 148.13000 it is practically in mint condition, it runs amazing! I actually got it for only $10! It’s in a table/cabinet and I can hardly find any information online about it. For some reason when I turn the hand wheel left it doesn’t disengage the needle. I took it apart to see if something was blocking it, and still haven’t figured out the problem. I was getting frustrated putting it back together. Maybe you have some tips what I could do/look for? 😅

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joannie Chorjel make sure that the hand wheel axle has oil on it between the hand wheel opening and the axle surface. Sometimes you have to hold the needle clamp and prevent the needle bar from going up and down to break the bond between the hand wheel and the axle. When the hand wheel begins to spin freely it will distribute the oil down the axle shaft and remove the glaze of old oil buildup that is probably causing the problem.

    Hi. This video helped me tremendously. The clutch release was tight and would not loosen when threading a bobbin. It had been like that for years, it is my mom's JCPenney Model 6923. My husband took the entire hand wheel and clutch release apart and put it back together in hopes to get the clutch release to work. Well the clutch release works, but how I get a loud squealing noise when I sew. I thought he put it back together wrong, so I took it apart again, followed the instructions here, and thought I resolved the issue and still a squealing noise. I cleaned out all the debris. Any other suggestions before I try to find a repair shop during this time of SIP. I am part of a mask making group serving out local hospitals so I want to get back up and running fast.

    • @TheJudeJane
      @TheJudeJane 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get it to sew, hold the large wheel with your left hand and with your right hand, turn smaller wheel AWAY from you to engage the sewing needle. To wind the bobbin, hold the large wheel with your left hand and turn the smaller wheel TOWARD you to keep needle from jumping up and down as you wind the bobbin. I hope this is what you had trouble with. Not very clear but thought I’d take a shot at your intentions since you had no response.

    • @r.duroucher225

      Squealing noise is often caused when the belt is too loose. The pulley on the motor spins faster than the belt and makes a squealing noise.

      Turn it up onto its left side with the hand wheel upward.
      Spray some penetrating oil around the circumference of the main shaft and in between the hand wheel.
      Hold the needle clamp from moving up and down while you turn the hand wheel to release it from the main shaft.
      Don’t pry anything and be patient as to not break anything.

    I have a Kenmore 148 with a very similar set up. I think there's some old grease on the shaft that spins between the inner and outer wheels at the handwheel, because even released, the mechanism still moves, but slowly. When I put my hand on the inner wheel, it stops.
    I thought I lubed the heck out of that point, but it looks like I'll have to go in again?
    Edit: pulled off hand wheel clutch again, pulling the handwheel out a bit I put a lot of Tri-fllow on it.
    After taking off the top, I found when I pulled out the hand wheel a bit, I could see old thread wrapped around the shaft.
    This may have been causing more friction than the machine wanted.
    Could have been that it needed more Tri-flow or the thread was messing with it, but it's running great, now!
    Thanks very much for your video! Huge help! 1 out of 4 ways that part goes on right! =)

    Thank you! Thank you! Prongs pointing OUT! I bought a NECCHI "parts machine" for $65. When I got it everything looked fine, but it wouldn't run no matter how tight the inner hand wheel was tightened. Someone had apparently been fooled by the counter-intuitive aspect of the clutch disk. You would think the inner tabs are to engage the slots on the drive and should be turned in. No longer a "parts machine."

    Been looking around all morning for just the right machine and someone I can understand. I like the detail you use while going through the re-assembly of the wheel. My problem is that I know that two wheels turn in opposite directions but the little wheel no matter how I try will not turn. It has become one solid piece. I dare not force it for fear that I will make it worse. Any advice on your part would be appreciated. As a last resort I will take it to be repaired but not a lot of $$ and I am the original owner : ) so getting around not so easy anymore. Thank you in advance for any help you may supply.

    He said inside prongs towards you, outside at 2, 6, and 10. I thought he said it would work at 12, 4, 8, since on his first try the 2,6, 10 position failed. The washer won't stay on so I can get the screw motion wheel reassembled as it keeps falling off before I get the screw motion wheel back into the fly wheel, and the set screw (although I tighten it), doesn't seem to tighten up the screw motion wheel. Can anyone with better luck, give me suggestions here? Thanks!

      Upfromthe Basement I had the same issue, I literately had to use a rubber mallet and oil remover but after two days the clutch and wheel got unstuck. Softly hit the wheel from behind and spin it as you hammer. Your wheel is ceased to the clutch. Old oil turns to nasty varnish. Remember rubber mallet or rubber hammer. Good luck.

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to GENTLY and purposefully TAP the hand wheel with a plastic or wooden (non metal) device. The handle of a screwdriver works nicely in many cases. Oil the shaft that it turns on. If necessary, spray lightly with a penetrating oil. It’s a finesse move that gets it off. No brute strength required.

      @@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 I am not sure Darylle Smoot was meaning the the clutch knob or the clutch wheel. I THINK your answer was how to remove the wheel rather than the knob which has the screw??? I have remove the screw but the small knob is stuck fast. Did you mean to gently tap the knob that sits over the clutch wheel? I want to fix mine but worry about doing something to prevent any fix. My day thought he would do me a favour and 'serviced' the sewing machine when mum it. I suspect he put the washer back wrong and somehow it is all jammed together. Can you clarify at all? (If I made sense trying to explain it?) Our local shops are overflowing with a repair backlog too.
      If you would answer it would be MUCH appreciated. So glad you put up this video (thank you!) as I would have no idea what even lay behind the clutch knob. My hubby wants to use a large shifter tool to loosen the knob off the wheel which I said no to as afraid there may be worse issues from that. 0.0

    • @raypelling6440
      @raypelling6440 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@idledreameress The knob with the little screw (the one he is removing in the video) should not need any harsh help coming off. It's just the set screw and standard thread. I have to hold the handwheel on mine to get it to loosen.
      What Randy is referring to, I believe, is the shaft that spins behind the clutch that he is taking off. If it is frozen with old oil (from olden times) the shaft can freeze up and make the clutch not work. That was why he was talking about the gentle taps with a non-metal object.

      I don’t know. With 335 of them, I lose track.
      You need to remove the top and ad some sewing machine oil where the hand wheel spins on the end of the shaft.
      You may need to hold the needle bar so that it’s motionless and allows the hand wheel to release and spin by itself.

      @@ZahradeLancre it sounds like you have a loose belt that needs to be tightened. Underneath the machine on the right hand side is where the belt adjustment is found. It will be a bolt head that you can loosen and move the motor down slightly on its bracket. Then tighten the bolt and your back in business. The belt should have a slight flex in it. Not too tight.

      First, make sure that the lifter lever and reverse lever are in the unlocked position.
      The second thing I would do, is remove the bottom screws (4) and check for a crack in the gears. If there’s a crack, a refund is in order.(game over)
      If the gears aren’t cracked, it will need to be oiled in all the spots.
      If an assembly spins, slides, pivots, or rotates, it will need a drop of oil.
      AFTER OILING COMPLETELY, AND NOT BEFORE:
      Try urging the hand wheel to turn by coaxing it very gently in a turning motion with both hands.
      Make sure that the bobbin case is removed, and the hook assembly is soaked with oil. (More than a drop)
      Be cognizant of the fact that there’s plenty of plastic in that hand wheel area.
      Don’t go all “gripzilla” and break something.
      Be patient and just get it moving.
      If it starts moving at all, you’re the winner. Stick with it and it will eventually run freely.
      Good luck.

      You might have to remove any old oil and buildup that has accumulated on the hand wheel axle and inside the hand wheel where it contacts and rotates on the axle. Use a fine emery cloth or crocus cloth to clean and polish both. Make them shiny, oil them, and reassemble.
