  • Frederick Earl Long, known by his stage name Shorty Long, was an American soul singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer for Motown's Soul Records imprint. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1980.
Long was born on May 20, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama. He began his musical career as a DJ in Birmingham, and he also played in several local bands. In 1963, he signed with Motown Records.
Long's first release for Motown was "Devil with the Blue Dress On" (1964), written with William "Mickey" Stevenson. The song was the first recording issued on Motown's Soul label, a subsidiary designed for more blues-based artists such as Long. While this song never charted nationally, the song was covered and made a hit in 1966 by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Long's 1966 single "Function at the Junction" was his first popular hit, reaching No. 42 on the US Billboard R&B chart.
Long followed up with several more hits in the late 1960s, including "Here Comes the Judge" (1966), "I've Got a Woman" (1967), and "Chickenboxer" (1968). He also released several albums during this period, including "Here Comes the Judge" (1966), "The Prime of Shorty Long" (1967), and "American Novelty" (1969).
Long was known for his eclectic style, combining soul, blues, funk, and rock elements. He was also a prolific songwriter and wrote many of his own hits. Long was also a talented producer, producing several albums for other Motown artists, including The Originals and The Dramatics.
Long died in a boating accident on June 29, 1969, at the age of 29. He was posthumously inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1980.
