  • Oasis was an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Originally known as the Rain, the band consisted of Liam Gallagher, Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll. Liam's older brother, Noel Gallagher, later joined as a fifth member, completing the core lineup. Over the years, Oasis experienced several lineup changes, but the Gallagher brothers remained the mainstay of the band.
In 1993, Oasis signed with Creation Records and released their debut album, "Definitely Maybe," in 1994. The album quickly became a massive success and set a record as the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. The following year, they released their second album, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?," which propelled them to international stardom. It spent ten weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, became one of the best-selling albums of all time, and solidified Oasis as one of the biggest bands of the 1990s.
Despite their musical success, Oasis frequently made headlines for the turbulent relationship between the Gallagher brothers and their wild lifestyles. In 1996, the band performed two landmark concerts at Knebworth, attracting an audience of 125,000 people each night, marking the largest outdoor concerts in UK history at the time. The band continued to achieve commercial success with the release of their third album, "Be Here Now," in 1997, which became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history.
However, as the years went on, Oasis faced declining popularity. McGuigan and Arthurs left the band in 1999, and Oasis released "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" in 2000 with new members Gem Archer and Andy Bell. Oasis underwent further lineup changes, with drummer Alan White being replaced by Zak Starkey and later Chris Sharrock as touring members. They released three more studio albums, "Heathen Chemistry" (2002), "Don't Believe the Truth" (2005), and "Dig Out Your Soul" (2008).
The band's existence came to an abrupt end in August 2009 when Noel Gallagher announced his departure from Oasis. Despite their breakup, Oasis left an enduring legacy. As of 2023, they have sold 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful acts in UK chart history. They achieved numerous UK number-one singles and albums, along with platinum albums in the US. Oasis received multiple awards, including Brit Awards, NME Awards, Q Awards, and MTV Europe Music Awards. Their album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" was honored as the "Best Album of the Last 30 Years" at the Brit Awards in 2010.
Oasis' music continues to resonate with fans, and their impact on the British rock scene remains significant. They are remembered as one of the defining bands of the Britpop era, characterized by their anthemic sound, memorable melodies, and the distinctive Gallagher brothers' dynamic.
