Intra Abdominal Pressure

Measurement of bladder pressure via an indwelling urinary catheter is a simple and effective way of indirectly measuring intra-abdominal pressure. The highly compliant wall of the urinary bladder acts as a passive diaphragm when the bladder volume is between 50-100mls and thus will accurately reflect Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). Monitoring abdominal pressure is useful in detecting the onset of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and the more severe condition, abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS).
