Robin Williams at his most antagonistic, he was seriously chilling in this movie. I was also scared of him when he played the baddie in "August Rush." Rest in piece, Robin, you're still missed to this very day.
One Hour Photo and Insomnia in my opinion Robin Williams did a excellent job and I still own them on DVD and Blu-ray, it still makes me sad he's not with us no longer.
That's what makes Nolan's career so crazy. His well reviewed, profitable film starring Williams and Pacino is his underrated film simply because it didn't make a big cultural splash and the rest did
One of the greatest thrillers of the early 2000's hands down...was not aware it was a remake! The mutual level of masterful cast, acting and directing accompanied by an elevated script.
😂 I do sympathise, it's grating yes, though even far worse pronunciation horrors occur on soooo many channels!! Don't CCs know they can just google pronunciation and actually hear it???
I went nuts watching memento. I msde all my friends watch it and tell them how brilliant it wss. At the time, i was captivated by the film's stars. Pearce, Moss, and Pantoliono were fantastic. But then i noticed the special features contained the original short story by the director Nolan. That was when i realized this is that rare talent i will have to watch everything this person creates. And i haven't been disappointed yet. Another excellent selection by JoBlo
Was chatting with a film student on the train the other day and he hadn't even HEARD of it!!!!😳🤯 Of course I assured him most stridently that he absolutely had to check it out!! Yeah, it's pretty surprising how many haven't seen it , even sometimes professed Nolan fans!! I don't get it!!🤦♀🤷♀ It's sooooo rewatchable too, I find it kinda addictive and usually immediately start it over again when I watch it! Truly, thanks so much for making and posting this for us, MUCH appreciated!!!🙏🙏
I love this movie because we SEE a death by accident...then the rest of the movie we get to hear Robin Williams tell us he had his own little accident too
There is something about these darker, smaller, less talked about films that are always so enjoyable. Everyone knows them, but people rarely bring them up. Insomnia, One Hour Photo, Bringing Out The Dead, 8mm, all great movies. Plenty of other ones too that I either don't know about, or forgot existed.
Dang. I really want to know how the Cheddar Chalupa came to the realization that being toasted was inevitable, and that the other condiments had to find a way to implant this knowledge into Chalupa's head without tipping off the crazed killer that was trying to stop Chalupa from self-actualizing. And what about Chalupa coming face to face with destiny as it eventually invents the bathroom bomb that changes humanity? Thus, sending the fast-food world into a frenzy after the toasted crumb storm threatens to wipe out existence, and our friend Chalupa has to bend space and time to make the triumphant rescue? Can't wait to see it.
Insomnia is such a great film! It really is an underrated work from Nolan and I honestly prefer it to most of Nolan’s other more “big idea” films. Great performances from Pacino, Swank, and Williams and a great script and great directing job from Christopher Nolan!
Robin Williams played a villain so well like his friend John Travolta did working with John woo twice on broken arrow and face/off. Robin Williams was a great actor may he rest in peace.
I've seen a ton of reactors do all of Nolan's films and they always never do this one because they simply go with whatever their audience picks, but the audience only tend to pick the movies that they're aware Nolan both wrote and directed. Since most people aren't aware he helped write this one, they never add it to a list of his films. I think that's why it's underrated. Supposed fans of his don't know it exists.
It's a strangely unsatisfying film, in that it's clearly very well made, is cleverly plotted and contains many high-quality elements, but is almost entirely uninvolving
I agree with all the points here in the video. My 2 cents is, that when this movie came out, I was working retail at a CD Warehouse where we did a lot of DVD resales. i was also in film school at the time so my perspective of this movie is a little different than most. Why this movie gets misrepresented or forgotten about is because of the over saturation gotcha-movie-moments like this. I call it the "Fight Club Syndrome" where out of the blue, right after Fight Club came out so many dramas/pyscho-thrillers were coming out that were literally clones to fight club to "its all in his head." Or some other gotcha-plot-twist that isn't verbatim Fight Club but also comes pretty close to it with how they got there, where they are going, what the main character is going through. Not to say Fight Club ruined it for all other movies but it sort of did also. I was seeing way too many movies like this to a point it was getting harder and harder to give movies like this a fair shot. I honestly cannot tell you how times I saw a movie that was actually good but I lost interest due to this connection. Perhaps Insomina also got this treatment. At least from me, from my POV in 2002.
I haven't seen this since it first came out. I really need to give it another go. I remember liking it, and especially enjoyed watching Williams play against type, but for some reason I never went back to it.
I haven't seen this one in ages but I remember I was blown away when I first saw it in 2002. And I knew right then and there that Nolan would be a perfect director to reboot the Batman franchise. This film needs a 4K release asap!
I absolutely 💯 percent loved this movie. A friend of mine suggested it to me. I thought Pacino was excellent, as always. Robin Williams was off the chain as the villain with so many layers. One of his best roles and dare I say it, possibly his best role of diversity. And here's the kicker, folks. At the time I watched it. I had no idea it was a Nolan film. Which made me realize later that this was another reason I loved. 🤔 Nolan, honestly has not made a movie (I've seen) that I don't like.
Probably Nolan’s most underrated movie. I mean… Christopher Nolan directed a thriller starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank (which was also a remake of a Stellan Skarsgard film) which, with the former’s casting, also kind of acts as a spiritual successor to Heat and we as a society have just collectively decided to ignore it. How and why?
This was the best movie Al Pacino and the late Robin Williams ever made with legendary director Christopher nolan. The way Robin Williams played the villain just shows that he should have been a villain in any batman movie from 1989 on down. He should have been in a Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan Batman.
“Following” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie. “Memento” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie with big stars. “Insomnia” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie with big stars within the studio system.
The relationship and story between Pacino and Williams' character was fairly unique and ultimately worked very well together. I felt sorry for the Finch character in the end, as ultimately he was just a victim of an unfortunate tragedy - as much as Daumer accidentally killing his partner.
I was a fan of Nolan before Batman. I bought Memento (great extras on the DvD like finding a spot to play the film straight through) and Insomnia soon as it came out on DvD. Good interview with Pacino on the extras. I was a fan of great cops movies (Heat is still #1 .. hundred percent. No movie has since come close) .. I can see Nolan being a fan. Even now on a Sunday relaxing ill put on Insomnia. Great film. Now ill watch it again and see it as "Its all in his mind" .. should be interesting.
The near erasure of 2x Academy Award winner Hillary Swank from this video is baffling. Her character, Ellie, was the heart of Insomnia and deserved a better a exploration here, as in any. I get Hillary is not the star she once was but she has as many Oscars as Nolan and if that means something for him then it should mean something for her.
this movie is trash. clickbait video. one hour photo is wayyyy better. and lets face it, Williams is why anyone watched this movie. Pacino was in it for the check and its obvious
I feel shitty and not my best after a whole day without sleep. I swear, 11 days without sleep I would not be surprised to discover the serial killer was me and that I was in an insane asylum all along or something.
I love this movie but there’s 2 things about it I find crazy 1 it was released on the same day as dreamworks underrated animated masterpiece spirit stallion of the cimarron and 2 maybe it’s just my love for him but I actually found Robin Williams character sympathetic in fact I think that both this film and one hour photo did a brilliant job of foreshadowing one of my favorite performances of his Merrit Rook in law&order svus 200th episode authority
Hot Take: Stanley Kubrick's The Shining only had one major flaw: not casting Robin Williams as Jack. He could have scales, built & arced his Jack way better while being as scary as or scarier then Jack.
Can you please stop saying “simularities” (6:00) in your videos? It’s not a word. The word is “similarities”, from “similar”, not from “simulated”. There’s no “u” in “similarities”. You’ve been saying it for years and you need to know.
Between this, One Hour Photo, and Death to Smoochy, Robin Williams had some dark interesting movie roles in 2002.
Came here to say the exact same thing. I call 2002 the year of Robin Williams' villain trilogy.
I love One Hour Photo.
2004 The Final Cut, underrated.
I'm rainbow fuckin randolph
I don’t think death to smoochie counts, yeah he’s the “villain”, but it’s a comedy
I saw it in the cinema back then. Great film, and Robin Williams is severely missed.
Robin Williams at his most antagonistic, he was seriously chilling in this movie. I was also scared of him when he played the baddie in "August Rush." Rest in piece, Robin, you're still missed to this very day.

Adding a French inflection to “Tenet” and then dropping it on “Demme” is gonna keep me up at night.

The first time I went to Juneau Alaska, this movie was all i could think of, especially sitting outside while it was still daylight at 1130 PM.
This is my favorite film of Christopher Nolan.
Unlike his other works, this movie has no pacing issues.
I remember watching this in the theater. Great movie. Man I'm old.
Same here
I love this movie because we SEE a death by accident...then the rest of the movie we get to hear Robin Williams tell us he had his own little accident too
One of the best thrillers of 2000s great performances especially by Robin Williams great to see him play a villain
I love this movie. It's the first time I've seen Robin Williams play a villain, then I circled back and watched one hour photo.
I enjoyed this, interesting perspectives on a film I don’t revisit enough
Watched it a few months ago and it is still a masterpiece 👌
I adore this and especially, One Hour Photo.

Very underrated film. I found Tenet great as well. Time travel and the weird makes things interesting for me.
Insomnia is such a great film! It really is an underrated work from Nolan and I honestly prefer it to most of Nolan’s other more “big idea” films. Great performances from Pacino, Swank, and Williams and a great script and great directing job from Christopher Nolan!
saw this in theaters. i really liked it, great performances by Robin Williams and Al Pacino 👍🏼
We watched a movie has invaded JoBlo horror! 😂
I knew I recognized that voice! And the year of our dark lord….. 😂
All you did is make me want to see Heat now. I love that effing movie...smile
Love this movie any movie with Pacino is great and Williams as a villain but I actually like one hour photo more
"Jack & Jill" is a horrible movie with Al Pachino.

I love this movie and do find it pretty underrated. What a great cast and setting
Always forget Nolan directed this. Love this movie!!
One of my favourite Robin Wiliams' performances, and arguably Pacino's last great performance.
I absolutely 💯 percent loved this movie. A friend of mine suggested it to me. I thought Pacino was excellent, as always. Robin Williams was off the chain as the villain with so many layers. Damn man, when you can slip in a Lucas quote in a video, just shows how awesome the 90's really were. Joe, i'm leaving the couch......
“Following” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie.
“Memento” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie with big stars.
“Insomnia” showed that Christopher Nolan can make a movie with big stars within the studio system.
The Dark Knight trilogy showed that Christopher Nolan can shoot three movies before Stanley Kubrick can make one
It was good 👍
RIP Robin Williams 🙏
def Nolan’s most underrated movie. This movie is so good!
A great movie! Insanity! 👍
The relationship and story between Pacino and Williams' character was fairly unique and ultimately worked very well together. I felt sorry for the Finch character in the end, as ultimately he was just a victim of an unfortunate tragedy - as much as Daumer accidentally killing his partner.
I got this DVD when it first came out and didn't think much of it. I got rid of years later. I've regretted since.
I was a fan of Nolan before Batman. I bought Memento (great extras on the DvD like finding a spot to play the film straight through) and Insomnia soon as it came out on DvD. An amazing movie, remember watching this before I knew the name 'Christopher Nolan'!
It's good Nolan's film, but original Insomnia give me chills
Movies set in environments and towns like in Alaska and the PNW are just 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Agreed. Love this setting!
Insomnia really needs a better home release.
Just a terrific movie!
I think Nolan’s most underrated film is The Prestige
I feel tired just watching Pacino pretend to be tired.
The near erasure of 2x Academy Award winner Hillary Swank from this video is baffling. Her character, Ellie, was the heart of Insomnia and deserved a better a exploration here, as in any. Insomnia is movie I never forgot that how great it is
Jonathan Demme, as in "Emmy" awards. Also, Tenney? No, Tenet, just as it's written.
"Insomnia" is the real😢😢 "Heat 2"
Insomnia is “the acoustic version” of heat.
I've seen this movie only once and that was enough. It was creepy.
No, not going to bite at the obvious straight line. Too easy! 😀
The best line was "I love chewing gum." LOL. What uh? Okay Al. I guess.
I really enjoyed this film alongside one hour photo
No, I'm not biting at the obvious straight line. Too easy. :-)
This plot is so similar to “True Detective: Night Country.”
Great movie.
When I was a kid I thought it was a sequel to HEAT lol
