Seen a lot of reactions to this album; you guys definitely have the best sense of when you're supposed to just feel the music versus how literally the lyrics are meant to be taken. Did both things really well!
Excellent analysis fellas! Big Ideas is far and away my favourite track from the album and you both perfectly summed up why - that somber vibe and honest, intimate songwriting really got me. Again, great video!
I rarely ever comment on videos but I have to say, I enjoy you guys paying attention to the lyrics, especially for Arctic Monkeys as Turner is one of the best in that department. Some of the interpretations are a bit far-fetched but that's the fun of it, I guess ! I personally really enjoyed the album. I rated it a 7/10 on first listen, it's gone up to an 8/10 by the end of the day. Definitely a grower. Can't wait to see you react to their older stuff as well!
Your reaction and analysis was fantastic, and I agreed with what you were saying - especially in the lyrics where he implies that their direction might not be what people want to hear. I heard in interviews Alex is saying that he can't say for definite they will get back to their earlier sound that made them popular, that they would have to gradually build their way back to it album by album which makes sense. It's a great album that I'd argue gets better with every listen. Although I liked Tranquillity and appreciated its wacky uniqueness, you know - that they were trying something different, this somehow feels like they've found or rather established their footing. Listening to it properly on my way to work this morning there were moments that just took me away and I really felt the music envelop around me - even Mr Schwartz which really grew on me after watching their live concert which streamed last night. I'd like another AM but they are growing and expanding as a band, not in the "trolling" Radiohead way but in a more natural way.
Thanks so much for the support! I can confidently agree it has improved with each subsequent listen for me too and although I haven’t heard tranquility yet so don’t have the context of the comparison I certainly agree the sound of this album didn’t sound forced at all.
Fantastic analysis lads - you both have really fascinating insights and made me think of some of the tracks in new ways. I personally love the record, and I agree that a lot of what's going on lyrically is about Alex Turner addressing the listener directly. Think most of the songs double as romantic breakup songs and fan breakup songs. They just keep evolving as artists. Would love to hear you react to some Radiohead btw
Such a cool analysis, really interesting to see you what you thought 👌🏽 Are you two just really interested in music, or are you both studying it? Only reason I ask is that you both seem really well versed on picking up on the small details!
No just both love our music, I (Lucas - on the right) also make some music in my free time and grew up singing in a choir 6 times per week so just been involved with it a lot :)
wow love these reviews and analysis, keep it up! would you guys listen to long season by fishmans, its such a beautiful album/song to experience at least once.
If you're interested in trying new bands I highly recommend 'The Warning' an amazing power trio of sisters from Mexico, but not well known in the UK yet: EVOLVE - th-cam.com/video/3_RB0tRI624/w-d-xo.html

fyi, in a interview Alex said he mentioned the car in 3 or 4 songs so he just kept it as a title.
